I've got 20gb in my head but that could be bollocks Blimey. Could well have been. My brain isn't great at remembering the finer details.

I've got 20gb in my head but that could be bollocks Yeah they were 20gig. I think there was a 40 version as well which was a hell of a lot considering when this was. My missus still has hers in a box, won't throw it out and asks whether i could transfer the songs off it onto something else as it has " all the things i loved back in the day". I should turn it into a playlist and see if i can finally get her to embrace music streaming which she still can't/won't engage with.

If Gremmi's Nomad Zen was 30gb, then it definitely could be 20gb I reckon.
I mean, I could physically go upstairs and have a look to confirm, but where's the fun in that?

My first MP3 player, which I can’t even remember the name of, connected via serial cable and had something like 64mb memory. Enough for maybe an album or two at that time.

I used to encode MP3s in mono at 64Kb/s so that I could fit more on my shitty little HDD. I dread to think what they'd sound like now...
Gradually moved up through 128, 160, 192, 320 and finally FLAC before I just said fuck it and used Spotify instead.
First iPod was 20GB IIRC, which was utterly unfathomable amounts of storage at the time. This was back when they came with a firewire cable and you had to buy a USB one separately.
Fuck it, I'm going to have to dig through my random box of iPods and see if any are usable tonight.

I remember getting my first Nokia phone around 1997, but the first significant tech jump after that was getting a Blackberry around 2005. It blew my tiny mind when I first got it...

I had a couple of the Creative Labs Nomad/Muvo players that had 64gb or 128gb. It was basically a USB stick with a 2 line screen, some tiny controls and a headphone socket that you then slid into a battery section. Really tiny, stupid expensive for the capacity but very handy as i'm sure i took downloads from college home on it tons of times when i ran out of space on other memsticks. The Sansa Clip series has been my goto for the last 10 years or so. Tiny, decent capacity, good sound and pretty cheap. Evwerytime i look to replace it with a decent DMP i end up looking at £300+ players and decide to stick with the Sansa and my Phone.

I must be remembering my first MP3 player at 128mb. Stands to reason that Creative one had a fair whack at the time.

I was a security guard in a small factory around 2004, had my cabin and took in my original chipped xbox with all my mp3's and films every shift, catching up on the news with my new Nokia 7600 egg shaped fucking thing that had actual videos to watch online.
Also had a World Cup to watch that summer and the job was great for taking my motocross bike into work to strip it down for maintenance, just had 12 hours to get it back together so I could ride home on it.

I had quite a few obscure MP3 players back in the day. A couple of iRivers and Cowon ones. Think I still have them somewhere.
One funny thing I remember, the Cowon CEO Mr Park was nicknamed "golden ears" because of his apparent legendary ability to discern imperceptible differences in sound quality between various different MP3 formats.

The Chromecast of it's day. I'm trying to find a picture of the analog cable box we had in the 80s but the memory is too hazy and i can't remember the brand. Something like this though. More recently than those, nostalgia for chipped NTL boxes still comes up in pub conversations. Late 90s it seemed like everyone i knew in the city had one

I hate to break it to you but that's a carbon copy of an iPod.
Anyway Christ we're fucking old, when did full colour hi-res touch screen LCD portable devices become nostalgia fodder.

Working in a drawing office about 30 years ago we had a few of these knocking around, a Rotring Scriber, it's for typing notes onto drawings, back before CAD when drawings were done by hand. As we moved from drawing boards to CAD they all just got skipped, though I had ample opportunity I always regret not nabbing one.

Psiloc - a mate had one of those and I'm pretty sure it was just drag and drop music on to it, unlike the iPod which relied on iTunes. Much better in that regard! Think I ended up using a plugin for Winamp to manage music on my iPod, as the Windows version of iTunes was painfully bad.

Old? We're approaching ancient status The first office I worked in as a graduate still had a typing pool. And rotary dial phones.

Heh My first office job involved lugging around a huge 286 laptop with laplink software to help fix stuff, and you never went anywhere without your fags and smoked at the desks. People wandering around with pipes etc. Fuck, that's pretty old.

I managed to convince my parents to buy me the OG Gameboy at launch when I was 15. I remember a small crowd forming at school break time - eager to get a look at this magical pocket-form console. I really was the cock of the walk until some tosser brought in an Atari Lynx and pissed on my chips.
Oh and other fan here of the MiniDisc. As a budding DJ in the 90's, it was the best way to record my godawful mixes and play them back.

Now that's pretty old. My first office job had a fax machine used non-ironically but that's my oldest reference Had one at my work until quite recently. We had one customer that had a computer. We would email him with a quote for example. He would print the email off from his computer. Write a response on the paper in biro and then fax his response back. Could never get my head around it. Literally all you have to do is click reply.
