It feels like what they probably conceived as fun fan service just feels like bad fan fiction or serves to show how far from TNG it really is

I forced myself to watch the full trailer.
Borg queen looks like a bad cosplayer from a convention. The blonde murderer from S1 is the funny quip character, don't know how that works personally. She should be in prison.
Q looks decent, but his story was pretty perfectly done in TNG, this is another story that doesn't need to be told. I know he showed up in VOY & DS9, but as far as him and Picard goes, it was tied off perfectly. But they can't leave well alone.
Overall it looks like more Kurtzman-era sentimental, melodramatic tosh. "I will get you home", "In the darkness there is always light", "To heal our future, we have to repair the past". Just garbage.

My greatest concern is that they'll ruin Q too. In my mind I can see them rubbing their hands already.

I ordered my first Star Trek novel the other day. Ghost Ship I think it's called. It's the first "numbered series", whatever that means. Apparently it was written before the show was cast and the front cover shows an upside down ship from Battle Star Galactica.

Nice one I started collecting them a couple years ago as theyh're quite cheap to buy. I only got to about 40-odd before I ran out of space on the bookshelf. I might pick it up again asm the book are usally quite fun, only had a couple of utterly duff ones.

I still haven't seen all of TNG, I'm just into series six. But I know that when it's over, I'll miss it. I want to start reading the books now so I have that universe, those people and places, to revisit. It's a salve, you know? When times are tough, TNG always makes me feel better.

By far and away the best was A Stitch in Time, a Garak-centric novel written by Andrew Robinson himself. It fleshes out the character really well and gives you a bit of (non-canon) post-DS9 story. Always fancied the Dominion War Stories collection too. No idea how good it is though.

I just watched the Picard season 2 trailer...
I quite liked the first season, for the most part. I did think it ended poorly and I didn't have much interest in the Romulan/Borg stuff, but it was mostly enjoyable.
Season 2 doing basically the mirror universe in a different guise doesn't look hopeful. The mirror universe works for an episode as something cheesey and fun. As soon as you try to take it seriously it just falls apart. Even DS9 struggled more and more with each return. I can't see this being any different.
I normally like timey-wimey stuff, particularly the way TNG did it, but this just looks like a straightforward present day jump. I already just from the trailer know the messaging they will be getting at with this, one that I could be sympathetic towards, but also one that I don't expect will go any deep than what we can already gather.
When it comes to Disco, I find it a deeply frustrating show. Mainly because there is something there that could passibly be good. I mostly like the characters and the general tone is normally visibly Trek. The writing is just abysmal though. With each season I warm to it, but before the end of the season that will all fall off a cliff, with each more ridiculous moment. I also just wish we could see some down time. Trek always had the characters living lives and actually socialising, which Disco never bothers showing us, too busy rushing for the next stupid plot curve. Season 3 started to show a little of it, but still not much.
Lower Decks is weird and I don't understand why they decided to make an adult animation show in the Trek universe. Watched a couple of episodes and it wasn't very funny, had uninteresting characters and stories were meh (which is an improvement on Disco).

I gave up on Lower Decks but after bouncing off it originally I’m fully onboard with The Orville now Disney+ is letting me binge it.
Its got such strong TNG dna and production values to match. Even if all the jokes don’t land.

Glad more people getting into The Orville, the first ep has some bad jokes and people thought the whole thing was "family guy in space" Seth said he had to trick Fox with the 1st episode to get the season made.
Also its nice to have positive sci-fi show now a days without having deeply annoying always right space jesus shitting up every scene

Love that its not going all grimdark too Totally. When Star Trek Discovery was announced while the world was going to shit, I was so looking forward to a change from all the bleakness porn of contemporary TV. Turned out DIS was just another modern TV show to make me feel worse. I was sceptical about The Orville (because Family Guy) but was pleasantly surprised that it's actually entertaining without wallowing in misery like most other shows.

Its funny its called Discovery as there is very little discovery in it (maybe the new pike series is going to be more like ST show, probably not as no doubt its the same pool of writers)
Rewatched the s2 identify p1 and 2 and the season 2 finale of the Orville and it was so good. the ship battles are actually good and remind you of ship battles in ds9. in STD, its mess of special effects (also discovery and enterprise can launch 1000 of shuttle fighters apparently)

I really need to give Enterprise a try at some point. VOY and TNG were very hit-and-miss, but still had a few good characters and episodes to keep things afloat and DS9 was mostly a success. From what I hear ENT started out weak and got better as it developed?
Discovery and Picard on the other hand seem to have not turned out overly well if redlettermedia can be believed. Well, obviously not just them, but they did leave and impression to be sure.

Wtf TNG and VOY very hit and miss! Get ye out of the thread.
Anyway...
Yes Enterprise improves dramatically once they rework the title sequence music.

Enterprise suffered from being a prequel. It never felt like it was developing the universe and even tried to rationalise other things (why Klingons in the TOS era didn't have ridges for example). There are some really good episodes and it's definitely worth a watch, but maybe the format had become stale at that point and other shows were doing things better.

ENT has a lot of problems and I think it's the weakest Trek series pre-DIS. My biggest gripe is Archer, I hate that guy. But even so, in contrast to DIS I still find it watchable. Season 4 is where it really took off after Manny Coto became the new showrunner, after three mostly drab seasons under Berman & Braga. Suddenly it was bold and colourful, even giving off TOS vibes. To think what it could have been if it had continued under Coto's rule, but sadly it was too late.
But you never know, there are also people who think of ENT as their favourite show. This is not an invitation to make fun of those people, it is perfectly legitimate to favour whatever Trek series you like. Unless it's Discovery, obviously.

I think Enterprise’s biggest weakness is that it took itself so seriously. Which meant it never really developed the domestic warmth that the three 90s series had.
Also, that theme song.

No explanation for the Klingon ridge question will ever beat Worf’s in DS9. Its all the explanation that was ever needed.
