Similarly to Avengers, Anthem (and, ahem, Gotham Knights), I know that I'll pick this up when it goes cheap and have a very enjoyable few hours in it. Hardly a selling point. I don't see how publishers can stray so wide of the mark sometimes. They must see the corpses of other similar games that litter the battlefield that they walk across with their heads held high, convinced they're going to get to the other side before being blown apart by an apathy bomb.

Sounds like Wonder Woman is a GaaS so they aren't learning.

I still don't get why King Shark and Captain Boomerang are using guns, one of the characters is even named after his weapon of choice FFS. Considering it's been months since it's last been shown you'd hope they'd have made it look more appealing but it's a no from me.

The pc requirements for this seem surprisingly low, almost as if it's very much a last gen game.

Anthem could have been so good. The basic flying and fighting were a lot of fun. Shame everything else was so bland. A bit like redfall I guess.

I suppose Anthem could have been good if it had decent combat, didn't have the weird separation of first person RPG and 3rd person shooter, had good writing, had a developer who didn't enforce a weird rule where they couldn't discuss Destiny, didn't have shit missions, didn't have terrible loot with awful stats, had a flight model that wasn't arbitrarily limited because reasons and didn't have an open world with no variety connected with loading screens upon loading screens. But yeah it could have been good.

Is Rocksteady actually the Rocksteady that made the Batman games? Did a lot of people up and leave once their trilogy of games were done?
It doesn't feel like this is being made by the same company at all. Either that or they have been dictated to about what they should be making.
Then again, even Sony, who had big success in the previous gen by focusing on single player experiences, seem to be desperate to chase that GaaS pot of gold. Big name games from well respect developers are crashing and burning following this formula, but yet they all seem eager to pour petrol on themselves in the hope that maybe they will have a Destiny on their hands (even Destiny 2 didn't really manage it).
If even The Avengers couldn't manage it, whilst the world was at peak Avengers madness, I'm not sure why they think Suicide Squad is going to fare any better.

Seems I deleted the word game without noticing. But a few reports today that the upcoming WW game is a Gaas. Didn’t WB say last week that, going forward, every game they make will be? It’s why I didn’t buy the new MK. The recent monetisation of that is just grim.

Is there anyone who actually likes games as live service? I feel like there must be, or at least a significant cohort of people who don't mind it. It must be making money, otherwise studios wouldn't keep at it.

They seem to be about 3 years behind the curve and failed to notice the plethora of live service games that have tanked. Just because Fortnite, cod and destiny (and a few more niche games to a lesser extent) are doing it doesn't mean there is room for more.

Also, wtf is "combat verticality". Is there a jump button now?

GaaS seems to make more sense for mobile titles, which are over 50% of the market by now.
As others have said, it's hard for most people to play more than one PC/Console one at a time, and they're designed to keep you playing for a long time.
If I drift away from Fortnite at some point, I might check out Apex, but I'm certainly not going to play both at the same time.
Combat Verticality = Titanfall (2)

Even Destiny is falling on it's arse these days and Fortnite has only recently got a shot in the arm because they brought back the OG maps.

Fortnite's shot in the arm took it from 'doing better than the majority of other games' to 44.7 million users in a day. It wasn't in trouble. There are plenty of GaaS titles doing fine. There is room for more, but they need to be very good. I'm not convinced this is going to be the one that pulls players away from many others, at least not for very long, but if they want to throw their hat in the ring at this point they need to be pretty confident that they have the legs for it.
I think the footage in the dev diary looked better than before. Maybe it's the context with all the story stuff mentioned/shown, but I didn't hate it and can certainly see myself playing it. It will be a one and done though, there's nothing here that suggests I'll be interested in raiding or whatever they have planned for post-launch/end game once the story is played through.

Theres also the fact that mobile games are free or 99p not 70 quid. Fortnite, Apex etc.. are also free. Maybe there's a difference in nuance/terminology between free GaaS and ones you have to buy, but I assume the model usually works better for free ones. There are all those free ones I see on the Epic Launcher like Smite, Rogue Company, etc.. that I guess they aren't doing close to Fortnite numbers, but seem to be managing to pootle along. So there seems to be space for some smaller, lower budget ones. The other thing about mobile ones is that I assume the costs to create and maintain content are a lot lower. (on average at least)

The difference is usually a worst-of-all-worlds, shitty single player mode. Fortnight, apex, valorant give you maps and some guns and away you go. The 70 quid games usually weld on a token single player campaign where the fun is sucked out by ten types of currency and cpu grunts that take ten minutes to kill.
That'll be 69.99, plz.

As far as he's concerned the game is dead when him and his mates decide they can't be bothered playing it.

In any case, leaning heavily on GaaS is stupid and demonstrates a complete inability to understand the gaming landscape, but WB making all their individual superhero games GaaS games is unfathomably dumb. Someone should tell them that even in the ideal world where all these games don't bomb spectacularly, people don't have infinite amounts of time and releasing multiple games that demand 10 hours of attention a week isn't magically going to give people more time to spend on them.
