According to that Jeff Grub guy this may be delayed into 2024, which really would be something else, which would be 9 years after their last game which is would be kinda crazy.

I bet they end up ripping out a load of the live service stuff, but end up with a mess of a game like Gotham Knights. Even a year doesn't feel like enough time to fix this.

The delays feels like its a bit of a sunk cost fallacy. The game is DOA, just release it and take the beating. I dont see how they can really change something that people dislike the very core of.

There's no indication that they are. It was a GaaS from the start, they can't rip that all out in a couple of months.

I'm definitely looking forward to the What Happened for this one. By all accounts it was supposed to be a Superman game but either they couldn't get the gameplay loop to be satisfying or because of top down management, I suspect it's somewhere in the middle, they re used Metropolis and Braniac and all the assets to make this.

Yeah, the story of its development could be more interesting than the game itself.

Yep, no chance this is going to drastically change and ditch all the things that have annoyed people. Maybe they will tone it down and make it slightly more ignorable, but no chance it is going to shift as much as people would want. As a positive though, the backash might make some more developers early in development to rethink their design. We could be coming to an end of this style of game. I certainly can't imagine another superhero game doing it after the flops of Avengers, Gotham Knights and presumably this. I only just got around to watching the trailer. I didn't think it looked quite as bad as some people have said. I'm a fan of combat that has lots of movement abilities (hence my dislike of cover shooters) and this certainly looked like it had plenty of that. Obviously, the actual shooting of glowing blobs was very dull looking and I would much rather it was a single player first game and not a looter shooter.

To be fair the development started so long ago that the things people are decrying now were, ahem, 'on trend' a few years ago. Not that they're (games as a service etc) not still popular games now either, but people are so entrenched in certain franchises, that it'll be a struggle for anything new to take anyone away from them.

If it is next year that's going to be almost a full reboot job.
Bye always online and so on.

Not really. Even a short development cycle for a game of this size would be 3 years (we know this has been in development for 6+ years). A delay of a year does mean that there is likely gameplay changes rather than just bug fixing, but we aren't talking a complete return to the drawing board.

My dream is that all developers and publishers abandon the gear scoring, loot collecting, "we want you to play this forever and ever" bullshit that is the hallmark of the live service game. Just make something with a good story, good characters, and satisfying gameplay that isn't just a pretty looking Skinner Box.
If you make a good game that does not waste my time, that will leave a good impression on me, and then I will be more likely to buy your next game. Making good things is good business, right?
...right?

Next year confirmed
Interesting to see what changes they make. But that last trailer might have done too much damage.

The 15 minute trailer of a game no one wants absolutely destroyed it, I just can't understand how they thought the GaaS shooter they took years to build was a good idea.

You see it all the time though, right?
Jumping on a fad late + a touch development hell = horribly dated game nobody gives a fuck about

I don't even think it being a GaaS shooter was the problem. You can make a good GaaS shooter. But people don't really want that from a superheroes game, plus what we saw looked very much ass.

Definitely a lot of that but also people only have so much time to devote to a Gaas, two max and they stick to them like glue. People will play it, for sure, but stick with it and get Apes, Fortnite and Destiny numbers? No way.

How the hell would you play 2? That’d require at least 2-3 hours a day, if you’re very competent/time efficient.

It being a GaaS title doesn't explain the bizarre decision to make Captain Boomerang and King Shark users of guns.

As a Destiny player, I don't think two GaaS would necessarily be too difficult. Once you get past the expansion content, which is just once a year anyway, the weekly bounties that matter (the ones that give you stronger gear) can be usually cleared in a couple evenings, so the rest of the week is basically free. You can play dailies if you want, but those only give XP so you don't feel very compelled to clear them.
I still end up playing D2 simply because I like the shooting, but if I did find another GaaS that I like, I could simply put aside a couple afternoons for that instead.
Don't get confused by level 999 streamers (and publishers) trying to convince you that you must play fifteen hours a day to have fun. The point of GaaS should be to give you something to do in your downtime, not a life commitment. I'm pretty sure there are many more casuals around than committed players. I think Bungie once said that only around 15% of Destiny players have ever cleared a raid, so that should give you an idea.

I dunno. I play Destiny quite casually in that I will play the single player content when it becomes ‘free’ and then immediately drop it because it’s horrifically over complicated. Every time I log in, they have layered in some other bullshit or there’s a new currency and I just can’t engage with it. God knows how they get completely new players as it’s not even obvious how to start a fucking campaign.
Being a GaaS would have put me off this even if it actually looked good because I just can’t be arsed with them.

The good thing is they set the bar so low last time that surely it can only be up
Skimming through, this is reminding me of Anthem. I think some of the movement and mechanics do look fun, as I did back when it was first shown, but it's just bogged down in live service bullet sponge gunk.
The combat design doesn't look carefully crafted, but more just throwing enemies in numbers at you to pump out easy content. Gunplay looks weak and the same criticisms remain like how the 4 characters are basically just different weapon classes. Not sure what they really changed with the delay.

Yeah that's not changed my opinion on the game. They still seem to all play the same way.
