My new 3d printer has just been shipped. Got one of these. Reviewed really well and (relatively) cheap. I'm quite excited. Anyone got a printer? What should I print first ( After this NSFW)?

Ah great... now I'm looking up how to 3D Print Sex Toys on my work machine... I guess I've always been meaning to get another job.

I have a prusa mk3, and I'm not printing anything at the moment, because the nozzle is clogged. Should have built an enclosure as first thing, to keep dust away from the machine.
It looks like this at the moment:

I've got a Creality Ender 3 that's a couple of years old now but i haven't used it for ages.
I have tons of ideas for brackets and stands and clips i want to make but i have zero CAD ability to design them and i kinda got bored and gave up last year. Maybe it's time to give it another go?

My favourite free CAD programs are OpenSCAD and Solvespace. The former is more of a linalg programming language with included renderer that can export to STL, and the latter is a classic constraints based CAD tool. I mostly use the latter for stuff that is hard to do in the former.

I have absolutely no use for one, but like most middle age nerds, really think I should have one. My nephew has made a really good Storm Trooper helmet. He was thinking of a business doing custom-made/sized cosplay bits.

WE have a Prusa Mk3 in the office and I'm using it a lot. I make inserts and stuff for my boardgames. I realy enjoy the process of encountering a problem, then think up a solution, design the 3D model (I'm using TinkerCAD which is very basic but meets my needs) and then print it.
Only to find that there was something I could have done better. So I modify, print test, improve. Until I tire of printing because it takes forever. So then I move on to the next little gadget I need.
Really looking forward to the day it's a matter of minutes rather than hours.

I've always wanted one. In fantasy land it's the solution to replacing various missing & broken small parts on various things but it's not quite there yet in terms of of ease of use. I'm holding on for Star Trek TNG replicator technology I guess.

There are food printers, but I think it's mostly for chocolate or caramel etc.
To make fancy looking desserts

I've got a Prusa MK3S and an Anycubic Photon (resin printer). They're both out of use at the moment as I've packed a significant amount of my stuff away in preparation for an upcoming house move, but I use them both regularly.
I mainly use them to supplement my hobbies, but 3D printing is pretty much a hobby in itself!

Old computers, board games/tabletop wargames and astronomy. You'd be amazed how useful 3D printing is for all of the above. Though I did print a Giger-inspired sculpture for a friend once that could very well have passed for (a very painful looking) dildo

I let my boy loose on thingverse, so i'll be printing dinosaurs, toy soldiers and pokemon models for a while now That said their shipped examples all work really well, but I'm having some trouble with the stuff I slice by hand *shrug* we'll get there. I have no real need for it, but had some surprise cash and figured I'd get something I wanted that I couldn't justify out of normal cash flow. It's really neat.

Once you have a 3D printer you'll find more and more insurances where it's useful.
Me and my wife bought a nice ceramic plate in Portugal many years ago. The stand broke a month ago so I found one on thingiverse and printed it.
My mates bathroom mirror had a light fixture with a plastic ring that cracked, he measured it and printed a replacement.
In a boardgame I have I need to put 60 wooden cubes in near rows with my shaky hands. I printed a grid that makes it super easy.
Small things like that, and they add up.
A few of my colleagues have printed laptop stands. One is even adjustable.

Designing the thing is 2/3 of the fun for me. I have printed tons, mostly custom computer parts for various machines. I'm not very artistic, so it's all general engineering stuff for me. I use Blender, a travesty considering what it's capable of and possibly not the most suited tool for the job, but I know it well enough to be moderately effective.

Blender is fine for single pieces that don't have to be reused in other stuff. Otherwise a constraints based CAD program is way better, because you don't have to realign everything manually, if you scaled some dimensions.

So i've been gently learning some modelling, picked up a book and went at it. this is from one of the exercises in the book and rendered. It's amazing to go from nothing to a thing just by fiddling about with circles and boxes.

Spent the last few days really trying to get my head around Fusion 360. It's so different from any other software I've used that the biggest hurdle so far has been to stop assuming I can wing it.
But its been really rewarding. I'm getting in to using parameters and patterns so I can build very flexible things. Can't wait till I get back to the printer at work so that I can print off a live version of my dull looking cube placer for Age of Steam the boardgame
