It really was striking though. I don't remember a single black player in the semis and I think one on each side (briefly) in the final? That shouldn't take away from what was a great achievement though, they deserve all the success they got. I hope they manage to keep the family-friendly atmosphere with the extra money and attention that this will inevitably bring. Incremental changes innit, up until around 2005 most of the professional players (in England) were gay, and when I say most I mean like 90%. I know this because I worked with Womans pro footballers wife in the mid 2000's. She told me it was pretty much a closed shop to straight women back then. However we are probably at about 50/50 or more straight than gay now? It won't take long until the England team is more diverse on ethnic backgrounds, in fact this tournament will be a huge boost for that. To be fair though the starting line up did look like a Goebbels wet dream.

This England team, or the starting 11 at least, was quite a white one but its not always been the case.
Although Aluko wrote some interesting stuff about it around the time she was fading out of the international set up. So its not a simple story.
My very rough assumption is that its not a problem with the women’s game specifically but a consequence of the opportunities (or lack of) afforded to people of colour in general. Its just magnified in the women’s game because while there are over a hundred professional men’s clubs in England there are literally 12 professional women’s clubs.

Most of the blonde hair seemed to be out of a bottle though I enjoyed that. Not as good a game as the last couple, but a good goal and they held it together well with what must have been a lot of pressure. The whole thing just seemed more positive than a lot of the mens events. I hope the result of them winning is some positive change, rather than it all becoming ruined by the press attention etc.. Good job though!

There's also the class-based aspect to it as well in that it's more difficult for girls from lower-income backgrounds to get involved and (stay involved) something which often manifests as a lack of diversity.

It's cultural as well remember. An Asian girl tells her parents she's going to play football instead of study to be a Doctor...not going to happen. I.e. the plot of Bend it like it Beckham is still relevant

Great player. Didn't perform to her best at the Euros, but a too finisher.

Brilliant player, so many goals and going out on a high even if she wasn’t firing at the Euros.
With her retirement, Steph Houghton not making the squad and Jill Scott only really making cameos to help see games out it really feels like this was the last showing of the London Olympic generation. And honestly, for all the good showings at subsequent World Cups and Euros and the creation of the WSL I really do think that it was 2012 and that squad which was the real kick up the arse that sparked the changes in the game that got us to winning the Euros and professionalising the league now.
Ellen White and that Olympic squad, I’d argue, were the first generation of household names the women’s game has had and were a direct inspiration to the younger players finding success now and an influence on the public willing and wanting to see it.

Over 1,500 at Newcastle Stockport yesterday Pretty amazing for National League Div 1 North. There were WSL sides who’d kill for that number a few season ago.

Think Arsenal have sold over 30k for the upcoming London derby, I'm taking my 4 year lad as it'll be his first match, I'm hoping it'll be a bit more relaxed as he's quite a sensitive kid.

I’m thinking a women’s game for my boy’s first match too. He’s only three and a half though so it might need to wait for one of the weeks they’re playing in a less formal setting than Kingston Park as he’d never stay in a stadium seat for 45 minutes

The slide at City over the last few years has been interesting to watch as other clubs have invested and they’ve not just been able to buy success (and basically the whole England team) Lovely goal from my girls at Durham in the Championship today too http://instagram.com/p/CipvVs9K8sX

Fantastic result for newly promoted Liverpool against the title holders Chelsea yesterday. Finished 2-1 with all three goals coming from the penalty spot.

Neville for Spurs has quite possibly the worst barnet I have seen in my life.

Interesting play from Spurs there.
Edit : 4-0 final score and Arsenal could have had more.

Newcastle just broke the attendance record for an FA Cup game outside the final today - 28,565. Staveley is giving them a hell of an uplift now the parent club has taken ownership and started to invest money for the first time* www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63776313*begun a full Daz sports wash

Only an academy game but Durham beat Man City 5-0 today. Who needs all that oil money?

Ah shit, had missed that Miedema was also out with an ACL. Chuffed to see Meado get SPOTY. Great recognition for the game more widely.
