The Mankad in the India-England Womens ODI recently was fucking shitty, but at least you could argue the batter is gaining an advantage by walking out of their crease. Bairstow was gaining absolutely nothing. Yeah, but the law isn't about whether the batsman "gains" anything from being out of their crease. They can be stumped with a ball in play, regardless of the reason they're out of the crease. And the dead ball rule is “The ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play.” So, it wasn't a dead ball. Maybe it should have been called as such earlier. But it was not, so Bairstow was wandering out of his crease with a ball still in play, and that's how you get stumped. It was a weird one, and I think he should have at least been warned first (apparently he'd done it a few times earlier that innings), but like... Bairstow made the error. He did a dumb thing, so I think the blame should at least partly reside with the person who did the dumb thing. Not the person who took advantage of it. Anyway, overall I thought it was an exciting game, and it sucks that this is overshadowing everything else about it (including Stokes almost Hulk-smashing you to victory). I hope we can calm down enough to enjoy the rest of the series.

I hope we can calm down enough to enjoy the rest of the series. Yeh I think the blame for the wicket should absolutely be with Bairstow, and it's true that the batter's advantage has nothing to do with the law. The issue for me is...why would you WANT to try for a wicket when the batter isn't trying to seek an advantage? It's just got nothing to do with sport, it's only about winning. Australia are good enough to win without doing that anyway. That for me is the difference with mankading. With a mankad you're levelling the playing fields of the sport - albeit I think a warning is still best in that scenario.

Some interesting changes for England. Robinson a slight surprise but I think he's got the experience over Tongue. Wood will hopefully offer some proper pace. Woakes offers something different, too. This is must-win for England, they have a great record at Headingley so hopefully that'll continue.

I'm still not happy with dropping Foakes and this was the perfect opportunity to get him back in.
Could make a good case they lost the first test in large part due to Bairstow's keeping not being good enough. It was just as shoddy in the second test, but with no front line spinner it wasn't exposed as often. Also it's just luck whether his fumbles and drops have an edge on them first.
The part I find tough to process is that part of the success of the last 12-18 months has been around attacking cricket. Foakes was a big part of that because attacking cricket isn't just everyone being able to hit brisk 30-50s it's also vital to take 20 wickets. Foakes gave England the best chance to take 20 wickets and there's some intangible factors where the keeper sets the entire standard for your teams fielding, especially the cordon. I didn't then find it surprising that in both tests our catching wasn't great all round.
Australia are a good side, dropping Smith or Warner, or missing an easy stumping off someone like Head can be the difference between a total of 250 or 450. So a bat averaging 5 more than Foakes will never come close to matching what he offers unless they're at least an international standard keeper and JB is most certainly not.

You make a solid case. They clearly think JB's firepower is needed but I agree that ultimately the adage remains true.

There's was an interesting stat my mate shared that showed England lost the first two matches on extras bowled.
I've dug it out:
"The numerical facts are that England have scored 1260 runs off the bat to Australia's 1245. After Stokes' eight-wickets-down declaration and Australia's two-wicket win at Edgbaston, followed by a 40-wicket second Test (only the fourth Lord's Ashes Test out of 37 in which all possible wickets have fallen), both sides have lost 38 wickets. Thus, England's batting line-up has a collective average of 33.1, Australia's 32.7. England have, however, conceded 60 more extras than Australia (118 to 58), leaving them 45 runs behind in total, accounting for the 43-run margin at Lord's and the two runs by which the Baggy Greensters overtook England at Edgbaston."

Bairstow's footwork is just so poor. That's caught by a top keeper.

Yup, absolutely static. If he'd moved the other way in anticipation of an outside edge, I could understand it but...
