Despite the quick fall of wickets, this isn't as much a disaster as I thought it would be. I think England still have the edge batting first though, it's going to be harder to get runs in our second innings.

I was 50/50 on whether or not England's first innings declaration was a good call. Now wishing we'd batted it out for the extra 30 to 50 runs with Root and the tail end.

I'm on the fence there, although I agree there's merit in allowing Root to just hit out, another 30 or so... Robinson wasn't accurate enough for those few overs they did get in. The missed stumpings and no ball from Broad probably bigger errors though.

Trying to explain test match cricket to my 10 and 12 year old boys is exhausting, especially with this approach.

It's been a long time since I've been excited by the test team. My dad and I have rarely talked as much about cricket as we do at the moment (and we both love to follow the England tests across all formats), he keeps reminding me that's been saying for years we should just play test cricket like we do the on-dayers. I am a firm believer of Bazball right now, it's the intent that does it for me. Just play with joy, take it to opposition and see what happens. We're not going to win every game, but it's a far cry from the attritional defensive stuff we have often reverted too.
