Ha! First time here after posting but mostly lurking for 17+ years over at the old forum <show sad emoji here>.
Anyhoo.
As a casual gamer of 45 I'm on the fence with this one: should I try and dive back into Destiny (after playing the first (or was it already the second) one a little bit years ago) or invest in Apex Legends to scratch my shooter itch?
I know it's comparing apples and pears.
Some context: I love the gameplay feel & art direction of both games. I just like to hear from people with experience which game will give the most pleasure when only played casually (ie: 2-4 hours per week).
Destiny seems overwhelming with the 'rpg' aspect (powering up and customizing your weapons and character with loot)
Apex seems pretty tactics heavy.
Shooterwise I come from playing Titanfall 2 casually :-)
Cheers!

I suppose the decision is if you play PVE or PVP? Also what console are you using? Destiny 2 only runs at 60fps on Series X and PS5

Destiny 2 only runs at 60fps on Series X and PS5 Good one: I like PVE a lot because it gives me more of a team effort feeling. When I play Titanfall in a team it always feels like I'm playing solo. But at the same time because I'm a casual player, playing a team tactic heavy game is not really working for me I think. I have a PS5 btw...

Give Apex a go, it doesn't cost anything. It is a frustrating game and has a surprisingly steep learning curve, but it is absolutely fantastic.

As much as I love (and hate) Destiny 2, I'm practically married to it, and want to encourage others to try it, I'm hesitant to recommend it for the very casual.
Foe the very invested, D2 is in the best state it's been in a long time imo. But the on-boarding of new players that the game provides is pretty terrible. Honestly if you only have a few hours a week you're going to spend as long again on google, youtube, reddit trying to work out basic stuff that the game explains poorly or not at all. D2 is deliberately engineered to be a hobby, they want it to be the only game you play, and it can be almost deliberately opaque because of that.
Other problem is there is currently no story campaign in the basic D2 F2P, you need to buy expansions. But see below on Forsaken becoming free for a bit in December.
Not to say there's no casual fun to be had. If you liked Titanfall 2 you're going to love just playing around with the movement and gunplay in D2 (it's the best there is in FPS for me) and that alone could make it worth a dabble.
If you're not buying the game, run through the New Light intro which will get you into doing strikes, gambit, crucible, patrol, solo stuff and matchmaking. On Dec 7th they are opening up the Forsaken campaign DLC for free (before it goes away for good in Feb 2022 to make room for Witch Queen). Forsaken is D2's campaign story high point so far, you could get a lot of fun casual hours just pottling around doing those missions.

I don't think either is amazing for the totally casual. I really like Destiny 2 but it takes a fair bit of effort to get into and then it asks a fair amount from you to stay up to do date.
Apex on the other hand is probably easy enough to get into but it can quickly become frustrating if you're not doing well. And if you do start doing well something about the matchmaking very aggresively makes it harder to do well again. It's a bit of a vicious cycle, I played for about a year and a half and eventually just got sick of it.

Apex fanboy here. It is tough at first, but the maps and movement are gorgeous. It's free to play, too, so no upfront investment apart from time. Matches are quick to find on the London servers, too. There's a fresh batch of bugs every patch, some of which even get fixed!
Absolutely no PvE though, so might not tickle your fancy.
Suprised Lamb hasn't pimped the Font Geek squad yet...
Edit: forgot to mention the ping system, which is fantastic if you don't want to use a mic.

Apex Apex Apex, Do it
I just love the movement mechanics, most other games just feel too pedestrian now.
I'm still playing Lamb and Salt

The last time I played Destiny 2 I found it really confusing.

Suprised Lamb hasn't pimped the Font Geek squad yet... Pimping time - there is a Font Geek 'club' you can freely join in game (there was/is an EG one but.... you know). All casual and fun games if you want to try and partner with some lovely folk who I'm sure would happily explain some of the intricacies, or not, mics are not a prerequisite and as Immaterial (Salt) said the ping system is great. Hopefully I'll be on more soon if I ever get my house move sorted.

Thank you! Great to read all these perspectives. Haven’t made up my mind yet and I completely forgot about the new Battlefield coming up. But I’m edgeing towards D2 and getting a paid expension.

D2 is probably worth waiting until the Witch Queen launches in February to be honest. The new campaign should serve as a good entry point, right now you've got 4 seasons worth of seasonal content there and it'll be pretty confusing. Should be a cleanish slate from Feb.

I’ve been watching a beginner’s guide; that armour upgrade path slash all the options are overwhelming indeed haha.

Yeah, with a new campaign though the power cap they should be equalizing everyone's power level again, so you should be at an equal enough footing (albeit without a massive database of armour with good stat distribution and guns) to just blast through and learn as you go.

In other news: I just bought Back 4 blood and bloody hell that is fun. Yes the setting is generic as hell, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. I think this will have my shooter itch scratched for a while.
