We’re up in Scotland for a few days and, having done a ton of driving, we thought we'd have a bit of a chillout day today. One of the thing we're doing is going to see No Time To Die in The Highland Cinema. It's a relatively small place (two screens, I think) and it got me thinking. Didn't one of our number (Goban, iirc) used to run a cinema up in these parts? Wasn't this one, was it? |

Googling "New Eurogamer Forum" brings up a Reddit post with a link here, hopefully any stragglers will find their way.
Goban's cinema was an epic story, was gutted for him when it ran out of steam. They should make a film out of it. With Scarlet Johansson in a role. Sex nympho usherette or something.

Did it go tits up? That's really sad, it was a dream of mine to run a repertory cinema for a while but unless you're in a very hipster sort of place, the economics of it really aren't behind you, especially after Covid and people just sitting in their home cinemas streaming. I've been to arty cinemas in big cities showing stuff you think people would really turn out for, and I was one of about five people in there.

Back in the EG days, user Goban and I frequented some of the same threads. His Highland Cinema thread being one. Over time a bunch of coincidences piled up until we asked a few questions of each other and realized we had known each other in RL; he tended bar at my local, Cafe Drummond, in Aberdeen. Back in that bars halcyon days when it was all drinking, drugging, dancing and fucking and we were all late teens, early twenties. I think it was something like 15 years after he moved away and many years on EG that we realized the connection
He’s doing really well in RL at the moment, content and appreciative.

Hello. The Highland Theatre in Oban was indeed mine. It's now community owned and called the phoenix.
The Highland cinema in fort William was part of the package when I took over Oban, but I declined that one. I'm glad to see it back running again.
Best days of my life in that place, and EG was a huge support when I was losing the plot in my projection room.
