Happy Birthday, it's the first anniversary of Genshin Impact today.
Gacha enthusiast are a little salty because their would normally be some kind of freebie cannon shooting out stuff but because this has been one of the most popular mainstream and AAA Gachas out there Mihoyo didn't feel the need to set the bar too high on giveaways. Fingers crossed for next year.
I've been playing all year and enjoying it greatly while being subtly manipulated in to logging on every day with two accounts to do the Daily Quests events and slowly get absorbed. Two accounts because I have kids who wanted to play it together initially but only return once in a blue moon.
I started a thread on the other forum a where I can't remember what I said but it was probably something like, the gambling mechanic is not to bad and the China based developer is not to bad. Curious people should give it try because Free to play is certainly viable and if anything the difficulty curve is broken by spending money. Happy to answer questions if you want to know anything about it.
This video essay below on it gives a good account from a western perspective, although at 100 minutes it might be quicker to download and play the game but the author gives a good account of a long term player starting from a cynical position slowly being won over.

My only experience of gacha games is the Shin Megami Tensei mobile game Dx2. Which is a great game that is absolutely ruined by power creep and P2W gacha bullshit. A few people I used to pay Dx2 with are into Genshin Impact and they all speak very highly of it

I fell into a deep Genshin Impact hole, and I'm having a good time. I'd even argue it's a good game.

Have they fixed cross save yet? Seemed to be a totally different account for PS and PC when I checked it out, so I didn't bother carrying on.
It seemed decent enough in fairness. One of the better F2P offerings I've played, but I'm guessing those first few hours aren't about clobbering you over the head to spend money.

Bit surprised to see this here but hey Pity there's a content drought incoming for a while but understandable given the circumstances. The disclaimer that the weekly delay compensation will be cut accordingly if the delayed patch releases mid-week is hilariously petty though, imo. It would hardly kill the game if they gave the full 400 primogems instead of, say, 300 for that week...

I could use some tips. 8hours in and I keep being told no -Main story progress will do you a lot of good in terms of accessing new areas (including the entire Inazuma region) and weekly bosses whose materials you need to upgrade character abilities. -The character pulls operate on a pity system where you are guaranteed a 5 star character every 90 pulls maximum (getting a 5* before that resets it) and a 4 star banner character every 20. The weapon banners have a similar pity system but in general it's not overly worth pulling on those unless you've got a good roster of characters already so maybe don't worry about that for now. The standard banner that's always available uses different wishes (Acquaint Fates as opposed to Intertwined Fates) and has its own separate pity. -Starting out, you should aim for a balanced roster, both in terms of elements and character roles. Kaeya and Xiangling are both given to you for free and are good characters to build. As for banner characters, unfortunately (assuming you just started) you missed out on one of the most useful characters in the game, Raiden Shogun, and it will most likely be a while before she gets another rerun. However, both Ayaka (the current banner, which also has very good featured 4 star characters) and especially Kazuha (who's expected to get a rerun sometime in the next few patches) are very good characters and you have the entire game's worth of resources to pull for them. -A big part of the game is using your resin (which regenerates over time) to hunt for field bosses (they drop materials to break character level caps), weapon/talent upgrade domains and especially artifact domains. Artifact hunting is the biggest piece of RNG in the game, but early on you shouldn't worry too much about that or you will burn out. -Don't be afraid to look things up. Efficient farming routes, character builds and teams, when materials respawn... All of that is important to know and easily available online. This is not a game to play blindly. Bottom line, focus on story first at least until you can fully explore Inazuma. Having all of the regions/teleport waypoints open to you will make it much easier to do everything else (and you'll need materials from there if you decide to go for Ayaka anyway, so...)

How the character gacha works (this warrants its own post) Limited 5 star character banners (like the Ayaka one on right now) work like this: If you've never got a 5 star before OR if your last 5 star from a limited banner was a featured character, the next 5 star you get has a 50/50 chance of being the featured banner character. If your last 5 star from a limited banner was one of the five "standard" characters (Mona, Jean, Diluc, Qiqi or Keqinq, who can also be found on the standard banner that's always available) the next 5 star you pull on a banner will be that banner's featured character, guaranteed. Combined with the above tidbit about 90 pulls guaranteeing a 5 star if you don't get one before that point, all this means that, worst case scenario, 180 single wishes (18 ten-pulls) will guarantee you at least one copy of the banner character even if your last 5 star was featured. Obviously you're hoping to need less than that (ideally, to win the 50/50s), but Lady Luck can be a bitch sometimes Example: say you do 70 pulls on the current Ayaka banner and get a 5 star. If that 5 star is not Ayaka and you continue doing pulls, your next 5 star on this banner will be Ayaka, no questions asked, after which you return to the 50/50 chance. If the first 5 star is Ayaka, you return to the 50/50 chance for the next one. This pity carries over between different sets of character banners and when there's two banners available at once, it's shared between them. Example: if you get a non-Ayaka 5 star on the current banner and then stop pulling, your next 5 star will be the featured 5 star on whatever banner you pull on, no questions asked. It's also important to note that dupes of a character also matter, as they unlock the character's constellations, granting them new abilities and improving them in ways that, for some, can entirely change the way you play them. Getting constellations for 5 stars is pretty much a pipe dream if you're not spending money (or get very lucky), of course, and it's almost never a good idea to pull on a banner just for a 4 star or to "build pity" towards your next 5 star (RNJesus will screw you over if you pull on a banner with a limited 5 star you don't care about, it's inevitable) but it's something to keep in mind.

One last thing I can think of, this interactive map is a godsend for finding materials, treasure chests etc. If you decide to stick with the game, bookmark it, use it, cherish it. genshin-impact-map.appsample.com/And of course, if you've got any more specific questions, I'll answer as best as I can

I have so, so, so many questions 😆 I was about to say that your posts are all Greek to me but worried that might not look good. How do I get (pull) new characters/weapons etc?
Does that goddamn fairy get shot into the sun?
Are the 4 starting(ish) characters worth levelling or should I ignore them after a bit?
Did I done goof by using all the levelling items on them already?
More to follow

Did I done goof by using all the levelling items on them already? More to follow The banners can be found in the Wish menu (the one with the icon that looks like a diamond). It's possible that you haven't unlocked it yet but it unlocks so early that I figured you had it at 8 hours in 😅 Once there, the banners are, from left to right: Limited character banners (Ayaka currently, there's been cases where two run at once but no more than that so far) Limited weapon banners (so far only one at a time) The standard banner The beginner banner should also be there until you pull on it twice (2 10-pulls or 20 singles), I don't remember its exact position but it's titled as such so it should be easy to spot. About pulling, the reason I said not to pull on the weapon banner just yet is because 1) a 5 star weapon won't mean much with no character to use it and 2) there's plenty of very good 4 star weapons that you can also get from character banners, so you'll likely build a decent arsenal while expanding your roster anyway.

As for the starting characters: -Traveler (Aether/Lumine) is the most versatile since they will eventually get access to every element as you enter regions (you can only have one active at a time though). They're also required to be in your party for certain battles and their cap break materials are given to you rather than having to farm them. They're not the best at anything but it's not a bad idea to keep them at pace.
Amber is... not very good, unfortunately. Sure, you'll see people soloing stuff with her but that's with very heavy investment and great artifact luck. She's helpful with puzzles and travelling thanks to her "less stamina spent while gliding" passive, but that's about it.
Kaeya is a very good Cryo applier (important for freezing, among other things) and a decent DPS when built. He's outclassed by Ayaka if you go for her (but Ayaka is top tier in general so that's no surprise) and Rosaria is a better support than him in some team comps, but the game mechanics favor having two Cryo characters in the same team anyway (Elemental Resonance, a whole other can of worms) so you can't go wrong with building him a little.
Lisa is... decent. As an Electro applier she's kind of outclassed at this point but you missed both of the recent Electro 5 stars, so until and unless they get a rerun she's not a bad option if you want an Electro character.
Barbara is a pretty good healer and she pairs well with Kaeya since her water barrier and his abilities freeze enemies when used together. Her problem compared to other Hydro appliers and healers is that her healing barrier also applies Hydro to you, leaving you vulnerable to elemental reactions. However, most other healers are either 5 stars or limited 4 stars so she's a good fallback.
Xiangling you probably don't have yet but she's an excellent free character. Good DPS, decent range when built for Elemental Bursts and pairing her with a Cryo character such as Kaeya lets them use the Melt reaction for great damage. A good investment all in all.
Noelle is given to you basically for free (the beginner banner is available until you make two 10-pulls on it, and uses Acquaint Fates rather than taking away the Intertwined ones you'd use on limited characters) and is a very good tank. She's also versatile, offering some healing and (with some constellations) decent DPS.
Tl;Dr: Xiangling, Noelle and Kaeya are good, Lisa, Barbara and the Traveler are decent. Amber is the lowest priority when it comes to gameplay.

As a general note, learning Elemental reactions and their effects, as well as Elemental Resonance (there's a button in the party build screen to check what that does) is an integral part of the gameplay. It can get pretty confusing, but take it a little bit at a time and you should be fine Ironically, it's also a good time to start, as the delays caused by the Shanghai lockdown mean that there shouldn't be any new events to rush you at least for a little while...

Quickly since I remember it: you should do 10-pulls on the beginner banner, NOT singles. The 10-pulls are discounted, so you get 20 wishes for the price of 16 Danno

New game from them was announced recently, looks really good. While I like Genshin for a bit, it always felt a bit generic. This has much more appeal

...Nnnot really; if anything, Genshin is the one that stands out compared to their usual stuff.
And from what little we know, this one hardly has any room for the gut punches Honkai and Genshin's (to a lesser extent so far) stories can deliver on the occasion, so after the initial "wow" factor (and the obvious "Oh hey, this is from the Genshin guys") starts wearing off I don't see it doing much... Unless their other projects start shutting down, that is.

Then again Ubisoft is apparently releasing a free-to-play roller skater game of all things (thanks to another thread for quickly tossing me to the old place) so wtf do I know, bring on all the Honkai clones you want

I guess 18 years of WoW (on and off) has finally left me cold on daily quests, loot lottery and the like. Managed about 4 days of Impact and I can't be fucked.

I guess 18 years of WoW (on and off) has finally left me cold on daily quests, loot lottery and the like. Managed about 4 days of Impact and I can't be fucked. Honestly, even with how bad the artifact RNG can be, at the end of the day you can easily get by with half-decent artifacts as long as you match the set bonuses/main stats. Not even close to a WoW grind imo. As for the dailies they're pretty much done in like 15 minutes for me, and that's using a subpar party to get friendship points. All that of course is rendered moot by the fact that ultimately it's your choice, if you're not enjoying yourself best to bin it early before the FOMO gets you
