In another sign my virginity is growing back, I have recently got right in to model making. We touched on it in a Covid related thread in the other place. Someone had made a Tamiya RC car, and I had got into Gunpla at the start of lockdown. I am now sitting here, supposed to be doing actual work, but instead cutting out tiny little bits of grey plastic and sanding them off to make a 1/35th scale Panzer 1. www.scalemates.com/kits/takom-2145-pzkpfwi-ausfa-and-pzkpfwi-ausfb--1345444It's a great way to realise your eyesight is absolutely crap. Used to love these when I was a kid - usually aircraft. Probably something I'll do when I'm older. Remember having my eye on an aircraft carrier but can't remember if I ever got it. To be honest, I think my dad did most of it

I have great memories from being a kid and building models. Mainly military, WW2.
Mainly sitting at the dining table, cutting bits off the sprue with scissors and gluing with that utterly rubbish cement that spunked out a little tube.
Nowadays if you don't have 3 different types of sprue cutter, a rotating stand for your various bottles of liquid glue and specialist magnifying goggles you're not doing it right.
Something that amazes me about getting back in to this is just how many sources of information there are. Youtube, forums, manufacturer websites etc.

I used to dabble in GunPla in my teens. Have thought of picking up the hobby again lately, but have not purchased any kits yet.

I mentioned it in the boardgame thread - picked up the Bolt action starter set A box of random sprues and vague instructions to "assembly your squads" was terrifying  And yes, a great way to realise my eyesight has been hosed by age |

I enjoyed Zoids when I was younger. Pretty much the same build it yourself except the resulting creation drunkenly lurches about via the power of batteries or wind-up. The Marvel comic was cool too, whereas the anime looks pretty dire from a cursory inspection. A fondness for Zoids gave Horizon Zero Dawn bonus aesthetic points for me too.
Not quite the same as the modern equivalents of Airfix though. I do remember seeing some massive Japanese model kit sets in Den Den town in Osaka back in 2008 though...

Last summer I bought an airbrush and a few super small but fantastically detailed Bandai Star Wars kits from Japan (Xwings, TiEs and the Falcon).
Also haven't modelled since, well, building and old Destroid Tomahawk kit back in around 1985. Damn right it proves my eyesight is shot! Looking for a good desk magnifier now.

I buy the bigger Warhammer/Legion/other TT skirmish game models purely because they’re fun to assemble and paint. I probably should get a proper airfix stuff one of these days.

I would go for something a bit better than Airfix - might get a bit of a shock at how poor they are. Watched a fair few reviews where the fit and finish just isn’t up to much. Quality models are fun. Filling gaps and shit is not fun. |

I dabbled a bit with probably half a dozen smallish kits (like 1:24 or something I think) back in my dope smoking days (about 20 years ago), tanks and mini's and stuff, great way to while a way some time and listen to the radio or whatever, then I bought a massive Harrier Jump Jet and realised I'd gone too far and lost interest. I'll pick up the hobby again one day for sure, very therapeutic.

Mainly WW2 planes. I recall tanks being particularly fiddly and the worst/messiest for glue mishaps.

Tanks - too many wheels to be sanded smooth but you always end up sanding a flat spot in to them, and the tracks are a bollocks. Planes - cockpit gets all gluey and difficult to paint. Ships - fucking tons of fiddly little bits |

I could get back into this, quite fancy a battleship, The Tirpitz maybe?

I'm quite partial to a bit of gunpla but I'm very much an amateur. I basically just snap fit them and don't have the time to spend cleaning them up properly. Wouldn't know where to start either with sanding or top-coating or that.
Bandai's 30 minute mission kits are great entry level kits that are fully compatible with each other if anyone is thinking of getting into the hobby. Should be available quite cheaply too.

Falcon fits comfortably in my hand. Feel like I need some more practice on cheaper kits to do these justice. Also found some 3d printed parts to add detail to gunports and cockpits, and lighting kits too. Will make nice dioramas once I have the confidence! |

I really like the look of those Pocher kits, but they’re priced a fair bit beyond my limit of “stuff I’ll enjoy assembling for a day that will be left to gather dust”

When I was young I was into building and painting fighter planes (including a *huge* F14 Tomcat  . Many years ago the last thing I built was a Ducati 916. During lockdown last year I built two RG gunpla models and one HG. All three standing proud in front of me on my work-from-home desk. I thoroughly enjoyed building the RG models ("00" Raiser and Force Impulse) but I found the HG model (an RX-78-2, of course) a bit too simple for my taste (it does look awesome finished though). I like the "no paint and glue" approach. Still thinking about getting a MG model. |

I was drawn to them immediately for their unique look - kind of more militaristic and 'real' My first purchase after the Alto was the Reborn 100 Graze Custom from IBO. It's a cracker. I have about 10 kits in my stash. Cream of those has to be the RG Barbatos. Will hone my airbrushing skills before attempting that bad boy. |

I have spent the last 20 minutes of my lunch break adding detail to the fenders of my little Panzer 1. 2 pry bars and a headlamp. The headlamp was particularly tricky, being as it is fucking tiny and semi-spherical.
I got it off the sprue, tidied it up, test fitted it and then promptly dropped it in the liquid glue bottle as I went to stick it on. ARSE

My favourite company was(is?) always Tamiya, such amazing catalogues. Tamiya catalogues are the business! I have a couple from late 70’s early 80’s. Such dense publications, details dripping off every model, and sublime dioramas on the middle pages. They are still the benchmark company. Others come in with higher part counts to increase detail but often just increases complexity. |
