Like, you'd have thought they would at least kick it off with some meaningful new stuff they've been working on behind the scenes, rather than "what can we scrape together to chuck behind the paywall" as it very much appears. I think it would be generous even calling it a soft launch to be honest. Less soft launch, more flaccid

I am kind of curious about the pay-walled Editor's letter now.
Maybe tantalising people by hanging things just out of reach can work after all, adding that extra spice and frisson that makes us see the banal sludge we never bothered with previously in a new light. I imagine it goes something like this:
More subscriptions. Buy your family, friends and pets Eurogamer subscriptions. More money. Send more money. Keep sending money. Mr. Reedpop is going to take a power drill to my kneecaps. Seriously, if anybody cancels their subscription I'll never walk again. Love xxx Oli

Pretty much. There's absolutely nothing there to convince you that subscribing would be a good idea. I feel a bit sad about it all truth be told. I felt intrinsically linked to that site for the best part of ten years - less time than many - regardless of how much time I actually spent on the front page. So to see it all nosedive so rapidly on top of the steady decline in quality content, is a little bit like passing that pub you used to go and see all those rock bands when you were young and discovering it's been knocked down and replaced by a soft play area. A) as a father of one, when I see the pub I used to go too has been knocked down in favour of a soft play area - that gets a thumbs up from me. B) Completely agree with the rest of the post.

Hey have you heard we are rebranding EGX to PAX UK, it’s usually going to be £50 but as a subscriber you can get an early bird discount to £49.50. Yours Roger Reedpop

I suppose it's a balancing act. If they spend too much time producing content for behind the paywall there'll be none left to produce stuff for the free version. Those press-releases don't copy and paste themselves you know.

Graxlar Good point. A poundland then, that may be a more apt analogy. Actually scratch that, that's good value. Hmm. What else. Fuck it. The pubs gone. It doesn't matter any more. It's gone and all the good times are gone with it.

As someone else said it feels like an attempt to fit someone's personal blog into a gaming website but asking you to pay for it. I really do wish them the best of luck sincerely.

The 90s music thing is really weird. I can totally see that becoming part of a paid programme once an audience is established, but to start with that on a gaming site? Did their market research earlier this year indicate that people would only sub if they covered 90s music? They probably wanted to present variety in the first offerings but because there's not much on there it just doesn't seem very, well, videogamey. It's utterly bizarre for a site called Euro'GAMER'. They may as well go all the way and change the name of the site to EuroJank, as I'm not sure how they thought a specialist gaming website's readers want gated articles from the editor about 90s pop music and some tat article from the same editor, once a month, starting with how they've reviewed lots of games recently... Wow, no shit! They must have known, like the forum closure, this new model was coming for a while and that's all their team could come up with for the big subscription launch day. Just pathetic. Or perhaps tragic. Or probably both.

I think they have to come up with these ideas to justify the subscription fee, but the way it sounds, the relationship with subscribers is like we're fans and want to know what they think.

They should just include videos of Oli reacting to the week's articles and reading out the names of all the subscribers telling them how much he appreciates them because they give him money he's proud to have such a great community of fans

The best was Oli in the comments about seeing premium content instead of it being hidden. It was along the lines of "Don't worry, you'll hardly notice as there will be only 1 or 2 subscriber posts a week".
Certainly getting their monies worth.

I'll subscribe if they get Jeffrey Matulef back for a series of articles about organic moustache waxes.

The sensible choice would have been to draw straws and the losing EG staff member has to open an Onlyfans account instead of pay-walling.
Not only is the money rolling in but you have somebody in your employ who will be at a professional level when it comes to skillfully inserting objects in their bum hole.

The best thing to do would have been to create a new up to date forum, and then asked people to subscribe.

Yeh that's a balance I think they're getting wrong. As far as I can tell, the premium tier gets you 4 articles a month. Oh and early access to a free podcast. I understand the desire to want to support them, but there's not much incentive for going over and above the cheaper option. Ho hum, maybe they'll work it out in time. I do hope so, actually. I would actually subscribe if there were a few more posts - longform games stuff.

Surely the podcast is going to mainly talk about current things so for non subscribers it’ll be out of date and off even less interest?

Getting rid of the forum is what it is. But they couldn't have handled the timing of that, followed by introducing the most piecemeal of piecemeal subscription services at a pretty eye watering price any worse if they were given another 100 attempts at it. That isn't even to mention this 'new system' that keeps getting drummed about. Surely you stick your hand out when you've launched that successfully and got all of your ducks in a row.
It's all appearing very chaotic and desperate from the outside.

My more jerkish side says that that second paragraph could be summarized as "We want you to please consider giving us some money, oh please, please 😭😭"...

adjacent, particular to the ex-RPS enclave: do remember to check your auto renewing direct debits - a bunch of us will have renewal dates around june/july as that's when RPS did a rearrange of its subs a few years back, and yes I had been considering sacking off this year* but I'm apparently not smart enough to cancel in advance of renewal date and just noticed a £59.99** charge taking me through to june 2024.
* it's not them, it's me***, kinda drifting away, kinda belt tightening ** double the price of EG! *** it is a little bit them

Instead of leading to a bunch of FOMO, the wider audience will instead be left thinking 'thank fuck I didn't pay for this'.

If you want it to… Emma’s memorable adventures… snuggle up…
What *exactly* are people signing up to over there, sounds a bit groom-y.

I clicked on the comments of that article and the top was "our parents paid for gaming magazines..."
Summed up the state of the website perfectly.

On a massive tangent Ellie Gibson was a guest on The Computer Game Show podcast last week, and mentioned it was over *10 years* ago that she left EG. This implies
1. Time is going quite fast and
2. We are quite old

Personally, I always think they ask too much for website subscriptions. $1 a month, with a discount to $10 for paying for a year and I might sign up on a whim.
I feel like they'd get a lot more people, so financially it'd be no worse off. Or maybe they're going for the whale strategy?
While you could argue $1 a month is cheap for the amount of work the writers put in, there are a lot of websites out there and you can't subscribe to them all at $5 a month or so.

I got an email from them too which included this line: "You are receiving this emails because you opted in as part of the Eurogamer Supporter program." which is both untrue, and the kind of grammar I'd expect from phishing emails.
