Just when I think I'm starting to get a grip on this franchise, I read something new and feel disoriented all over again!
As I understood it, the most recent game brought three big changes to the series: 1) thereafter, it'd be known as Like a Dragon everywhere, instead of being called Yakuza outside of Japan; 2) the series would switch to turn-based combat only in the future, with the real-time approach continuing to be used in the Judgment games; and 3) after seven mainline titles all focused upon the same guy, there would be a new protagonist at long last.
Now there are two forthcoming Like a Dragon games - one that jettisons both 2) and 3) by bringing back the old protagonist *and* the real-time combat, and another that retains the turn-based combat while bringing back the old protagonist alongside the new guy!
TL;DR It seems as though the change of name is the only alteration that has truly stuck.
In any event, it seems as though the best game for me to check out now is Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and the best game to which to look forward is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth - thanks for all your help on this front, chaps.

Yakuza LAD is very good highly recommended!
There are a few negatives depending on your preferences like quite long talkie only sections and some barriers to progression that force you to use arena like systems to grind up levels before you can then clear the next part of the story. But the overall style and pure fun of the game overrides a lot of that imo.
I still need to finish it off after burning out when I hit a second major grind point late into the game but I like it enough that I definitely will finish it soon.
The turn based battles do get repetitive but as long as you like traditional style jrpg games and have a good endurance for turn based battle systems you’ll be fine.
If you can pick it up £30 or less for PS5 for example you won’t regret it… it’s is great!

I'd recommend Yakuza 0 to any newcomers, even if you have a preference for turn-based combat. You get to see where Kiryu's (and Majima's) story began, it's got a super cool 80's setting, and most importantly, Cabaret Club Minigame.

For me, the appeal of the turn-based combat lies in its novelty factor - aside from Slay the Spire, every other game I own plays out entirely in real time.
If I get on with Y: LaD (which looks terrible when written out like that!), 0 will be my next port of call, though, for sure.

If you get Y7, just be prepared. The series as a whole is cutscene heavy, but that one in particular starts off kind of rough. Apart from a quick chase, it takes about 2 or 3 hours before the game lets you play again.
The rest of the game is better paced, but that intro is ridiculous.

How does the turn-based combat of Yakuza: Like a Dragon stack up against Persona 5 Royal's combat system?
Better? Worse? Much the same?
I ask because, although I think P5R's combat is superb in its design and execution, I don't actually *enjoy* it.
I'm not sure what to extrapolate from that, though - do I dislike turn-based combat in general, or is it something about Persona's combat in particular with which I'm not vibing?
I guess the only way to say for sure would be to play a different turn-based game and see how I get on with it; however, I'd be loath to try another without having some reason to expect a different outcome, y'know?

Y7 is much more simplified than P5 would be. P5 has the whole exploiting elemental weaknesses to gain a turn, recruiting personas, fusing them etc. Y7 is much more straightforward, more like Dragon Quest which they reference even in game. The job class system gives some intrigue into levelling them up and the summons add to it as well. To me it's the goofiness of it all that makes it. A chef, an idol, a policeman and a fortune teller fighting guys in Yokohama wearing bin lids on their heads. It's good but maybe 60 hrs or so in, the combat kinda wears thin when you've seen everything to see and enemies become more tankier which draws fights out longer. For a first attempt at turn based combat however it's excellent and I'm looking forward to 8 to see how they improve it. The appeal of 7 is also everything the series brings too, a crime story with likeable characters and so much content in side quests and things to do, prob the most of any Yakuza game.
Gaiden looks good, the Y8 demo being included in the game too is a nice touch. Only available after beating it too.

The main thing I'd say as a tip in 7 is to use the shortcut function to assign commands to the dpad for each character - because enemies can move around while you're choosing stuff in menus it makes sense to be able to get moves out fast. Once you do that, combat becomes really fast, just like it does as you get more powerful in earlier games too.

TufftyThanks for that! Very interesting. As I mentioned higher up the page, a month or so ago, I was originally drawn to Y7 as its turn-based combat represented something new to me; however, I ended up getting P5 first, and the rest is history. Perhaps my original instinct re Yakuza - that I should start with Ishin - was correct after all.

Is the combat in Ishin representative of the series as a whole? 'Cause I downloaded the demo last night - having found myself unable to download the PS4 demos of Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 6 on my PS5 - and found it pretty damn clunky.
(This isn't a slight against the franchise, as I get that there are dozens of reasons why people love it so much!)

Ishin's the Meiji Restoration one, hence the name (which means Restoration in Japanese).
It was released between 5 and 0, and is the first one to have made an appearance on PS4 so it's about 10 years old at the point of release. It's an earlier engine and a spinoff fighting system; it shares a lot in terms of the general ideas about movement but the newer games feel quite different, especially since 6 when they moved onto a new engine. I think Ishin's got a lot of interesting ideas but they don't gel together as well as the 'main line' game system simply because it hasn't been iterated on as much. It's way better than 6, which was half-finished and they also originally had to hard steer away from their first idea in the previews of having a Batman Arkham-style system, and I think it's more cohesive than Kiwami 2 which being the game after 6 still has a lot of floatiness to it.
If you want to play that fighting system at its best, try the Judgment games. 2 in particular is really excellent, and I'm hoping that Gaiden will be a nice Kiryu-style expansion on that.

Basically there has only been one that was a JRPG so far rather than a combo brawler

It seems like a weird decision to release Gaiden in November and Infinite Wealth in January, rather than spacing them out a bit (especially with all the JRPG content that's due to drop within the first few weeks of 2024).
