I will reiterate that, having played through all the Broken Sword games recently from start to finish, 5 being so visually amazing and entertaining to play does not absolve George Stobbart of spending the preceeding thirteen years being an absolute fucking bell-end of a character, and Nico would do well to stab him in the kidneys with one of her high heels.

I’d like to suggest A Final Unity, probably the only good Star Trek game ever made.

Impressive getting anywhere in KQ3. I remember giving up on that one years ago as it seemed you literally couldn’t go anywhere or do anything without getting killed by that nasty wizard.
Currently playing the new Kings Quest which is considerably easier. I’m enjoying it, it does seem to manage to catch the spirit of the originals in my opinion

I recall you having issues with Stobbart! I was never too bothered by him, but I do find his immediate decisions to interfere in criminal investigations to be a bit bizarre. If I nearly got exploded while on holiday, I'd probably go lie down for a few days.

And that’s why Stobbart got a bunch of games made about him and not anyone around here.

I’d like to suggest A Final Unity, probably the only good Star Trek game ever made. 25th Anniversary is a good 'un too. I think the similar Judgment Rites is meant to be good, but not played too much of that one. Unsurprisingly, point and click seems to be a good genre for Trek. I'm sure you already have it on the list, but The Longest Journey is the bestest point and click. Nice idea for a channel. I do the occasional games blogging and quite enjoy doing that, but video output is clearly what the people want. It isn't something I would do solo, but could see it being fun with a partner, particularly narrative games like this. Not really point and click, but slightly adjacent, doing Until Dawn or something of the ilk could be fun. Actually, the new Star Trek one that is coming up could be a good fit. Edit - oh and Unavowed is a great modern point and click, as well as most stuff by Wadjet Eye.

It was an enjoyable murder mystery, with different paths opening up depending on whether you approach situations empathetically or being a hard-ass.
The music in it is fantastic.

Quick sense-check (in as much as sense applies to anything we're doing) - We're looking at starting on the Tex Murphy games. Does anyone know whether it's worth starting right from the beginning, on Mean Streets, or whether I makes more sense to start at Martian Memorandum? I kind of feel like it would be more 'in-the-spirit' to start right at the beginning, but half of it looks like a terrible-looking flight-sim, which doesn't appeal, and apparently the later Overseer game covers the same story.
I think on balance, I might just go all in and play it, but just wondered in case anyone has experience with the series.

Start at Under a Killing Moon. The previous two aren’t worth playing outside of nostalgia, unless you wanted the novel experience of seeing how they got speech to play out of an internal speaker.

Thanks, maybe we'll give them a quick dip into for curiousity's sake, and if they're intolerable we'll just give it up and jump to the third, as you say.

I remember seeing Under a killing moon running on a gaming pc in a shop in the arndale centre in the mid 90s.
Blew me away with the amazing video and 3d graphics. The future of video games!

I really want to play the first 3 Monkey Island games and it's annoying theres no android version or available on switch. Don't have a PC which would have been the easy way.
Guess I could ScummVM them but I fancied playing the remastered versions.

Guess I could ScummVM them but I fancied playing the remastered versions. If you used ScummVM for android would you be playing these on a phone/tablet? I think it would probably be okay just using the originals. In most respects I found the newer art style less appealing than then original pixel art, but if I'm remembering right. Did the original come with a talkie CD version, or would you lose the voices too? On the special edition of MI1 I remember being annoyed that it wouldn't let you do the voices and the old art.

The OG's didn't have talky versions and I like talky versions. Plus I replayed them in the original forms a lot and I like shinnies now!

Google Monkey Island Ultimate Talkie Edition. Original graphics with voices in ScummVM. The remastered graphics in 1 are pretty bad, so it’s the better way to play it anyway.

In my "finally playing point and click games I meant to play 25+ years or so ago" phase right now, I completed Broken Sword 1 and 2 over the past few months (I don't get a lot of time to game!). Had originally started BS1 on the PS1 in 96/97 with a mate when we realised about 30 mins in that it wasn't the kind of game to play for fun when you had a school mate round. It was cool playing it again after all these years and remembering the fantastic cafe scene at the start. Absolutely loved both games, so much so I went on a completed BS5 (I was advised to skip the others). Very much hope we get to spend more time with George and Nicole again one day!
Next on the list, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Was it the director’s cut? That version is weird. Suddenly going from classic graphics and compressed speech to something that looks AI generated and crystal clear voices is a dissonance that threw me out of the experience.

I replayed the first Broken Sword a few years ago too, opting to do the original add-on that comes with the (imo) inferior remaster, and that beginning is really iconic. Its such a classic game, though I think Blue_Mike has some issues with Mr. Stobart.
Weirdly though I'm aware the Goat Puzzle is a famously frustrating sequence, I never had an issue with it myself and just blitzed through blissfully ignorant to its future infamy. I do remember struggling for ages on other bits though; I think a puzzle in a church involving a telescope and stained glass windows.

The portrait art is jarring and they added some bits and took other bits away. So it's nice they provide the original as a bonus dlc.

though I think Blue_Mike has some issues with Mr. Stobart An understatement. I would genuinely enjoy seeing Nico force him over to a full sink and hold his head under the water until he stopped moving.

And probably make some kind of sarky quip about it, attributing his ingenuity to American Exceptionalism.

How did you get on with the goat puzzle? I had no idea about the infamous goat when I played it and, sure enough, it was the first time in the game I had to go searching online for an answer! It was only then I found out the goat was a celebrity. It's a great puzzle, because the answer is one of those "fuck sake, of course it's that" and yet it's probably caught out more people than anything else in the series.
Was it the director’s cut? That version is weird. Suddenly going from classic graphics and compressed speech to something that looks AI generated and crystal clear voices is a dissonance that threw me out of the experience. I started the director's cut and realised within a few seconds it wasn't right (completely different intro and first scene, for a start!), so went hunting and found the original was a downloadable extra on GOG, sorted. No idea why they felt obliged to fuck around with a stone cold classic like that.
