grizzly : Remember the Pea Soup Debacle? I think Cara is one of the most fondly remembered writers these days, but back then it was apparently some sort of horrendous betrayal that she'd turn up and write stuff that wasn't Serious Games Journalism (as if that was ever what RPS was about).

Didn’t Rab Florence have to go after calling some company or someone out over something?

Didn’t Rab Florence have to go after calling some company or someone out over something? This thing? He decided to stop writing a column rather than being forced out, but yeah it was a shitty situation. Nothing really to do with RPS beyond the incestuous relationship between them and Eurogamer. He still writes for RPS occasionally (latest article about two weeks ago).

Yeah it was pretty shitty, he didn't write anything that wasn't true with the whole symbiotic relationship between the press and publishers.

I missed that whole thing when it happened but Rab Florence did some pretty good stuff for RPS way after that. I'm a particular fan of File System Aging when it came out.;

I remember some time back when they put some sort of facebook integration into it and it loaded the entire fb page in the background of every page before you could do anything. It was obnoxious and I never really bothered with the site again.

I use Diversion on my router and uBlock Origin in my browsers. Bollocks to turning either of them off for anything! Most websites look a bit crap with massive borders either side, but it's a small price to pay... You can block the container with a custom filter when it does that. Cleans whatever page up no end.

I remember when Quinns and Adam Smith joined and basically blended in seamlessly. Nathan as well. Cara. Probably others I'm forgetting. Hasn't happen like that for a while.
Oopa - this was more in reference to previous page of comments.

Adblockers just kick the can down the road. This morning I had a pre-roll advert play on top of an autoplay video on a promoted tweet about another product. I really don't get why they do this. I see the headline, think I might be vaguely interested and then just scroll on past as soon as the ad video starts. Tweets are meant to be short and immediate. Making you wait longer than it will take to read the tweet to see the tweet is just nuts.

The supporter only articles do show up in the RSS feed (although they're not flagged as such). There was a period where they just seemed like people were dashing of quick articles as a chore but there seems to be more actual content (e.g. Sin's articles) now. The problem is that I'd rather support a writer I particularly like via patreon for £60 a year than hope RPS commisions them enough to make it worth my while.

On general quality of RPS and the writers, I personally find that the quality is still there when it is allowed to be. The issue, like many other places nowadays, is the fact that they are required to pay the bills through neverending stream of regurgitated press releases and affiliated deals links. I think RPS makes those as interesting to read as is possible, but they are still what they are.
The volume of these seems to have increased of late, particularly the deals posts. The features and opinion pieces has stayed about the same, but seems diminished with the increase of corporate needs.
I guess this is probably why I have gravitated a little more towards their videos and podcasts in recent years. It feels a little more free from the corporate side.

Though even the podcast suddenly got advertisements from a... Us based craft drinks company?
Tbh sometimes I do feel like the RPS writers should just shut down the thing altogether and move to patreon to keep the lights on. It's been pretty good at allowing people to retain creative freedom.

Ad block needs to come to chrome mobile. I know there's other browsers but all my shits saved to chrome and I like it. Can't you just install something like block-this or blokada which act as a VPN between your device and the internet. Any device wanting to use the internet has to go through this VPN and it just blocks all this shit. They have whitelists as well so you can add sites if there are issues Additionally, youtube-vanced removes all adverts from youtube

The inbuilt adblock on Chrome on my phone seems to block everything except pre-vid adverts on the vast majority of websites. Certainly does the trick on all the Reedpap ones.
