If I needed any reason to adblock RPS this is it. Is this Roger Reedpop pushing such obnoxious advertising - websites shouldn't be surprised when we adblock their sites.

Very occasionally I'll read an article on the Daily Mail website (don't judge me, I try not to go there on purpose) and the page will refuse to load because of adblock. So I think to myself I'm here now, might as well disable it for a minute and you end up reading whatever story it was in a 2" square in the middle of the screen surrounded by adverts. It's horrendous.

I can't imagine using the internet without adblock. I hate browsing most sites on my phone these days too cos the page keeps rearranging itself to put ads back on the screen after I scroll past them

I use Brave as a primary browser, I'm seeing that sort of thing ("Please disable AdBlock") more and more often.
Inevitably, if you do so, the site literally bombards you with invasive advertising. It's always the sites with the heaviest, most intrusive ads that demand you allow them.
Yeah, I think I'll just go elsewhere.

What adblock plugins do people use? RPS just pops up a window saying the usual guff if I switch it on. Currently using AdblockPlus but that is detected.

US Gamer started doing that anti-adblock thing, I always wondered if EG would do it at some point too. It doesn’t matter now though because both are dead. I just back out and go somewhere else if blocked, fuck ‘em.

That image... Deliniation between what is an ad and what is a story is so, so poor. If you can provide a website with ads and not make the user fight to read your content, then I'll unblock you. That same ad is currently running on EG (which my work never bothered blocking. Good job they never took a close look at the forum ), and the bloody figure on the left hand side grows as you scroll down. This is obnoxious shit and needs to die.

Ad block needs to come to chrome mobile. I know there's other browsers but all my shits saved to chrome and I like it.

Obnoxious really is the word. I’d be happy to whitelist certain sites I’m willing to support if it wasn’t so fucking intrusive and such a miserable experience trying to read anything. Can seriously get to fuck until they tone it down.

I generally dont use adblock because people gotta eat but I will stop going to sites that abuse me not having it on. Like I just wont go to independent.co.uk rather than block it.
Oh and fuck sites that cant tell the difference between adblock and not allowing tracking, too.

Ha! I literally had the Independent.co.uk in mind when I was writing that too. It's got to be one of the absolute fucking worst out there.

More like a theme than an advert. It's not even a very good game
I've used ad blockers for so long seeing the internet without one scares me

I'm happy to switch it off (as Geoff/Nick? said, people have to eat) on sites that are reasonable about it.
But if they immediately launch a billion streaming video overlays, they can get to fuck. Shields up.

The auto-playing of videos still absolutely infuriates me. I wish nothing but ill on the utter cunts that popularised that across all platforms.

Yeah, I generally let the Guardian website display ads, because they don't feel the need to consume every fragment of clear space on the page or obliterate the formatting.

Its one of the few things that makes money, by all accounts. Makes sense that it would also be the most obnoxious.

Fucking state of that page. Jesus wept. This. Absolutely insane. I also use Brave + uBlock Origin and 90% of sites are great. Can be annoying streaming sometimes, such as BT which detects ad blockers. But then I just switch to a different browser for that session. I remember EG had a short period where they tried less intrusive ads if you added them to your adblock whitelist or something. That was okay, but didn't last long. With advertising like the OP screenshot, I don't see how they can possibly moan at people using adblocks. Absolutely outrageous. I'd also wager that the people in the advertising departments also have there own adblockers turned on when generally surfing the internet...

Privacy Badger is good, too, for blocking all that 3rd party, cross site tracking that everyone does these days.

Privacy Badger from the EFF is also good for preventing all the cross-site tracking BS that sites like to do these days, been using that and uBlock Origin for a while now privacybadger.org/[edit] someone beat me to it xD

Crikey. I've given RPS cold hard cash through the supporter program so haven't seen any ads on the site for ages (and wouldn't have any qualms about blocking the hell out of it anyway), but I had no idea it's gotten that bad. And yeah, if the options are to put up with that kind of mess or just not visit a site I would choose the latter. There are enough annoyances in my life as it is.

How has the supporter program been? It was something I debated doing, but felt like it came a bit late in the day for me.

Adblockers just kick the can down the road. This morning I had a pre-roll advert play on top of an autoplay video on a promoted tweet about another product.

I actually consume most of my news through the apple news app, tbh. I’m sure it enrages popzeus but having it strip out all the formatting and just give you the text of the story and serve you up a single ‘pensioners in Oxford are using this one weird trick’ advert is pretty much perfect.
