I was never that bothered about this but... they patched it in with the latest update. It was always an option and after 4 years they just patched it in. Wtf Nintendo.
Please understand etc.

They needed to do it or they wouldn't manage to maintain their trend of keeping hardware 8 years behind the curve. They would have slipped to 9 which is unacceptable.

Apparently it works terribly. Baby steps.

Wait, so old Switches get Bluetooth audio support enabled with a software patch? Eh? It had the hardware capability all along?

Think there had always been suggestions that the joycons were using some form of Bluetooth, no? So the capability was always there.
Just so weird to see 3-4 years of constant, vocal bitching about the absence of an entirely basic piece of functionality ending up with a switch (ho, ho, ho!) being flipped via a software patch, and very little fanfare.

It doesn’t really work though according to exclusive fontgeek sources (gremmi in the switch thread)

Bandwidth and signal integrity issues. It could always do it, but they already had problems with communicating with the joycons. Even now they state when using Bluetooth it’s limited to two connected controllers.

Kind of weird that they suddenly changed their mind on whether it was good enough to release.
Arrested Development Narrator: it wasn't

Hilarious really, when you consider the PSP Go had it day 1. And it's great.

I wonder if the Switch OLED has a slight modification that allows it to work better, and they're patching ahead of its release. (Probably not)

So I tried it on the Lite with Sony WXM4s, and it was fine. Didn't get the latency issues, audio quality was fine.
So I dunno whether it's a result of the Lite not needing the Bluetooth for other things, or something else going on. But yeah, no complaints here.

I tried it with my Sennheisers on an OG Switch. I noticed maybe a very slight lag. It works ok.

Works fine with my AirPods I no longer need to use the adapter I bought.

Just tried with my AKG Y50s and it's great if you enjoy having a half second audio lag, I guess.

I already had a genki dongle which works pretty well. I tried the built in Bluetooth and there's more of a noticeable lag than with the genki, so I've gone back to using that.
It's a shame as it's nice having it connect to your headphones instantaneously as soon as you turn it on or undock it.

Tried with AirPod pros and there’s enough lag to not want to use it. I wonder if the noise cancellation processing stuff makes it worse, but plugging in headphones isn’t exactly a burden on a device like the Switch

Yeah, tried it with some Samsung Buds, the lag is dreadful. Found it really quiet too.

Tried it with some Sony WF-1000XM3 buds. Seems ok with just one but goes a bit waffy with two buds paired. Think I'll just carry on using wired!

I use Steelseries Arctis 7 with the included transmitter. Works fine (not great for handheld but always use it docked anyway)
