This half has been so much better. Mad how much an early goal rattled us.

Heh, was Rulli diving to try and let that one go through his legs too?

Bizarre second half. Diaz was transformative, but it's like Villareal completely expended every lost drop of energy in the first half. They've been terrible in this half. Not remotely competitive. So odd.

They're now the first English team to play the maximum number of games in a single season.

Well, if Real goes through Salah will be glad Ramos is no longer there at least...

Hard to escape the idea that Liverpool were shite in the first half but Villareal were worse in the second. Not sure it says much else about either side.

Just flicked through the 1st half highlights as I was stuck working late... christ, different teams. Kind of happy I didn't watch it. Not good for the blood pressure.
Fair play to Villareal, took their chances and dominated that first half. Can see how they rolled United over.

Super league in all but name.

There's a tiny chance that, since it's technically not complete exclusion, we might have a "weak" team do well still, albeit much less often...
But that's likely just wishful thinking, it's basically "Tell me you want Super League without telling me you want Super League"

Super league in all but name. Yep, was always going to end up that way. Closed shop with the same dozen teams playing themselves to death to a large global audience is the future. I do wonder if it wouldn't have been better for them to have their stupid fucking league and then the rest to try and have an actual European competition.

Exactly why it was so funny watching fans try and parade around about "saving football". All they did was pass this predictable nonsense from one set of hands into another.

Ugh, that's depressing. It's also incredibly short-sighted and will harm the "product" in the long term because who the fuck wants to watch, say, Liverpool vs City five or six times a year?

Other than the loss of prestige and income, I wasn't fussed about Arsenal dropping out of the CL. We weren't in a position to win it or progress very far, was bored seeing us humped by Barca or Bayern year in, year out.

The reason the Champions League is exciting isn't just the latter stages, it's about playing teams you almost never ordinarily get to play. If the end goal is to create a cabal of 16 clubs, just crack on and get it done so the rest can have a genuinely exciting and genuinely competitive tournament. Over time I'm pretty certain the latter will prove to be more popular.

It also misses the fundamental point about supporting a club. I don't know any Real Madrid or Barcelona fans. Maybe that's changing, but not knowing fans of other clubs you play would be so dull.

True, but I also enjoy lording it over fans of e.g. United that Liverpool are in another Champions League Final. That only works if it's genuinely competitive, though - if it's a closed shop (and maybe this is more relevant to Evertonians), I'm fairly sure they simply wouldn't give a shit.

Neither side is going to have 11 players on the pitch tonight, the way this is going.
