I tend to look at all band reunions through very cynical eyes. It's the only way they (esp new artists) make money so of course it's all down to cash.

The thing that bothers me are bands like Pearl Jam, who kicked up so much of a fuss regarding Ticketmaster back in the day, but they're fine with the extortionate ticket prices today. Sure, prices reflect fees for the venue, staff blah blah blah. Still they are making an absolute mint. Then you've got the bands who have had a messy divorce, and need the cash.

Last I saw, PJ etc basically said they can't do anything, such is the stranglehold that a few companies hold on venues and ticketing. So if they want to tour, they have to lump it. As much as they want lower prices for fans. Not sure I wholly buy it - just play smaller venues.

If The Cure can work with ticketmaster, hold them to account and try to keep prices low then it shows that it can be done, other artists just choose to have the higher prices.

I don't think I'd pay 100 quid to go to a single gig. I wouldn't generally pay more than 50 quid for anyone, even my most favourite artists (and even 50 quid would make me question it).

That's why we're debating Nick Cave, as it's £220 for two tickets.. mental.

That's why we're debating Nick Cave, as it's £220 for two tickets.. mental. Oof. He's still on my 'must see one day list', but ouch. Although only £110 per head, so I could probably just about live with that. I still remember paying a fiver for some gigs (when I were a lad) and was amazed the first time i saw tickets priced at £35 years ago, then £50 became the norm. Now i guess £75+ is probably average if you want to see a bigger band. Thankfully, I mostly go to less popular bands in smaller venues where it's more 20-30ish quid!

Nick Cave for £110. He's ace but only so many times you can rip.off fans. Casuals ain't paying that for Nick.

I'm just trying to get my head round it. Yeah sure I think it would be great but what are you getting for that 110 quid? It's especially more of a pisstake in this economic climate.

Been musing this a bit further - as well as not wanting to pay that much for a ticket, I don't particularly care for massive crowds or the stadium experience anyway.
I think the festival I went to a few weeks ago is about the biggest crowds I'd like, no idea what the main stage capacity was but I think the festival *in total* had a capacity of 10,000.
So going to a sold out stadium with 50,000 plus people really doesn't appeal, especially if you end up miles away from the stage. I've been caught towards the back of a few small gigs and started to question why I bothered.
However, if there was a small intimate gig I'd be willing to pay more. If Nick Cave was inexplicably playing at a 500 capacity venue I'd be much more tempted to pay over the odds.

I think I've paid near/over a hundred quid for gigs twice. Once for Bob Dylan (I think that was 105) and once for Leonard Cohen (which was 90). The first was rubbish, the second was absolutely magic. Both were a long time ago.
Nowadays, it was looking like 70 quid a ticket to see the reformed Libertines, which was an whole lot less attractive proposition.

Saw Nick Cave at Brixton Academy on the Abbatoir Blues tour, incredible gig. Not convinced I’d want to see him in a massive arena tbh. Saw Tool at the O2 last year and it’s a bit shit being sat in a designated seat miles away, they put on a great show with lights and art projections etc but Nick Cave is much more animated and intimate

Think most I ever paid was just over £50 for Radiohead at Old Trafford.
Wanted to see Interpol this year for the 20th anniversary of Antics but they're charging £90, no way I'm paying that.
Fuck me, I saw Pavement last year for £40!

Hopefully a reset is on the horizon. A few bands have had to perform embarrassing climbdowns after failing to sell massively expensive arena tickets. The Black Keys sacked their management after having to cancel dates this year.
It is unsustainable. As Doug said, I like Nick Cave and have seen him live. Its a good time. Absolutely no way on earth is he worth £110 a ticket.
