Re: Paying for a gaming site. I have no problem with supporting a site I like. As others have said previously, if they had framed it as needing support to keep the lights on, I would have opened my wallet. But seeing as the forum is gone, they have lost their USP to me. Which is a shame. Good luck to them.
On a related note, I actually do spend money on Trueachievements.com. I like the site. Their news aren't any better or worse than other sites. But I enjoy their achievement tracking. And they're significantly cheaper than EG on an annual basis.

I have no probs paying for content I like - I sub to a couple of podcasts and the odd news site. I just don't read EG enough (part of the problem etc) to make it worth while.

Yeah the bottom line for me is if there was content there worth paying for, I probably would. But there's not. It's been going downhill for years and as far as I'm concerned it's at it's lowest point yet.

So they’ve just introduced a couple of subscriber tiers on Eurogamer. I felt the timing was odd, coming just after they nixed the forum, but then realised it would been worse to shitcan it AFTER people with goodwill started giving them money. At least this way there’s no misunderstanding about what you are getting.
Wasn’t sure whether to put this in Gaming or in News & Politics.

What was the justification for making EG subscription based?
I really hope it was because the site has taken a dip since the forum was shut.
There is no way I'm paying a subscription for news articles.
They will find out if they haven't already that paying customers will expect more than just 4 to 5 news items a day.
It won't be sad to see it go. EG has been bad for a while.

They’ve talked about it multiple times in the past, and there wouldn’t have been enough time to get decent metrics on the forum’s impact to make a decision then setup the backend, test, implement, etc within the 18 days or so since the Big Shut Off.

Like its not super authoritive like the NYT or having niche appeal or a unique editorial voice that fans want to keep alive. Or am I missing something?
