I don't get it. Who would pay to read opinion pieces from non-experts? I didn't read their stuff when it was free and felt no reason to at all
The bit about expanding the content out to cooking and other hobbies is beyond bizarre. It's almost as if they think their 'customers' are more interested in their personalities and lifestyles than anything else - maybe they are? I don't know
Strange stuff to me but it might be a generational thing and I'm too old

I take it all back, I've been over and had a look at the front page, it's absolutely worth £3.99 to read an article about shit 90's music. That is quite hilarious. That's one of their first pieces of paid content that they hope will encourage people to subscribe. A dribble piece on 90s music on a video games website. The core user base that would actually remember 90s music has fucked off when they kicked the forum into the sun. The irony. |

For what it's worth, although I don't get it, I wish them good luck with the venture. It looks like there's a few supporters already but at £3.99 a month they'll need to offer some tangible benefits to get decent numbers
All this "it's only the price of a cup of coffee" bollocks doesn't wash with me. I don't drink coffee and I want something back from the money I spend, not an "exclusive" article about white dog poo and other things we apparently don't see anymore

It’s a bizarre business model, they can’t put reviews behind a paywall as the publishers sending free games won’t be happy, you need decent articles to actually drive traffic to the site in the first place, so you’re paying a members fee for some extra pointless fluff articles that you wouldn’t dream of reading otherwise
