I've cut down on drinking a lot, but after going about two weeks without drinking I realised that it wasn't the booze making me anxious or stressed out or frustrated, it's just ...life. Only my personal experience of course. Yeah I get this. It's not stopped me mentally yo-yoing every day but booze became the guarantee I'd feel like shit (both during and in the days that followed). Therefore without it, I don't have that thing happening where every time I drink I'll feel like shit. I may still - that evening, feel like shit, but it's no longer a given.

Thanks for the advice all - I'm sure I'll feel better tomorrow and with Christmas coming up I'll ignore everything I've said above.
Doesn't help that I've heard from a few people that I'm the life of the party and come out of my shell when I've had a drink.
No, I'm not fun Bobby.

drhickman1983 - two weeks isn't anywhere near long enough for your mind and body to sort themselves out if you're a heavy drinker. It can take months and months for shit to get back to normal. Not to say it's a miracle cure of all mental health problems and you'll be a new person on day X, just that it's way too soon to rule it out completely.

Yeah I'm not a big drinker by any chance but I definitely have noticed the depressive aspects after a hangover, for me it last about a week, the depression that is not the hangover although I have had some ridiculous hangovers that have just gone on and on.

I posted elsewhere but I had a couple of large gatherings a few weeks back (one meal with half a dozen others, and a large double birthday party in a golf club that was full of folk) and they were definite tests. Previously (well, for a good 25 years solid) I've necked a few drinks, got into party mode and away I go. Without that I presumed my anxiety would get the better of me.
Turns out it was the opposite. Had two great evenings and the wife told me afterwards it was the most relaxed and at ease that she'd ever seen me, and we've been together twenty years.
Had another do last weekend with about 30 people I barely knew and it went similarly well. Still fucking shit myself beforehand and it will definitely still take some getting used to. Trying to re-learn how to socialise after over half my life relying on booze isn't easy.

This sounds really bloody excellent, thanks for sharing - gives me hope I'll stick it out longer if I can still have fun at regular gatherings.

I'm not going to be the preachy guy that's like "I've given up booze, my life is awesome, you should give it up too", because that guy is a cunt. What I will say is, don't be afraid to try the odd night without it and see how you get on. Trust in the person you are. People don't like you just because you're captain party after half a dozen shots.

See the other thread: I quit all alcohol at the beginning of October and don’t intend to ever have any again. Fifty-one years old here.

Mike Graham is one of the reasons I stopped listening to talksport. He is such a fucking arsehole and the definition of 'if a white man shouts something loudly and confidently enough it becomes true'.
His opinions on literally everything are absolutely worthless 'its common sense' takes with not an ounce of thought behind them.

Yeah, loathsome individual.
I don't listen to any talk radio as the whole premise drives me mad. I might end up in an echo chamber but I'm ok with that. I know what the various different views to mine are, I just don't need to hear it all the time.

I used to have it on most of the day after Alan Brazil had gone to the pub but its proper lowest common denominator bullshit served up by absolute fuckheads now.

The only talk radio show I'd listen to is if someone's stole the format from Frasier.
That Mike Graham clip is a beauty - the smirk and complete silence from the activist after Graham makes himself look a fool shows great self restraint.

Yep. As a moderately proficient and knowledgable home cook, I have come to the conclusion that the simple ingredients my parents taught me to hunt, grow, and otherwise procure are generally the best, and all the pretentious crud can do one. I do have a lot of respect for the talents of some of the more famous chefs – I know I'm out on a limb with some of these, but the works of Lorraine Pascale, Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and the late Gary Rhodes continue to enchant me, and they really do/did know their stuff. But when they suggest using some of the fancier items in a recipe, I tend to auto-respond with "yeah, I know a good sub for that".

I watch a lot of cooking stuff on YouTube and absolutely love it when they recommend easily found alternatives for obscure ingredients.

This is where Twitter is great - If I feel a bit naff, I often just tweet at Mike 'Concrete' and feel 10x better.

Most oils in general are a bit of a scam. Most Italian Extra Virgin olive oils you see on a shelf are usually a) not Italian, b) not Extra Virgin and c) probably rancid. Oftentimes it’s just vegetable oil with artificial olive flavoring. Same situation with Soy Sauce, you may just be getting salty water with some soy flavoring added. It’s one of those broad “know where your ingredients come from” things that’s paramount to good cooking.

Not sure that's true (of EVOO) in the EU/UK anyway, as geographical indicators are pretty heavily regulated and fiercely protected in trade agreements.
