My mum forgot to tell me that her fixed term was ending and she was automatically moved to the standard rate. I have since had a quick look at the various comparison sites and I can't actually find her a better deal. That can't be right, surely?! I must be misreading the costs.

Wholesale prices shot up recently, and firms have been accused of jacking up prices to compensate for the lower revenues from commercial energy usage (quelle surprise)

I'm half way through a fixed term with Octopus (which you can leave at any time with no penalty afaik), and have been quite tempted to jump shit due to how useless they've been at sending me an in home display for my smart meters. Been chasing it since April now.
They're all pretty shit though in fairness and Octopus have otherwise been decent.

One of my mates in the sector literally just messaged me and reckons prices will go up by several hundred quid a year for pretty much all households, for what it’s worth. So maybe new quotes are trending high because it will all be shooting up soon.

TIL about The Starlight Barking, the sequel novel to The Hundred and One Dalmatians. I assume Dodie Smith got on the drugs after the first book.

Good timing, I had a note through from EON saying they want me to increase my direct debit from £71 a month to £243 a month.
A quick call and a sharp word told them to get fucked with their estimated meter reading and I gave them the up to date ones.
Before moving to this house, was on a prepay set up at my rented flat and though it was more expensive (probably?) god I miss actually being in control of my energy costs and not having cunts guesstimate.

Wholesale prices are mental at the moment, the cap was just lifted and they've all bumped prices, so it's unlikely new quotes will be lower. Also a whole pile of the cheaper companies have closed down due to chasing new customers with unsustainable prices....

Glad to be on a smart meter now, a few years ago i was with edf and they told me I’d built up too much credit from overpaying and they didn’t like that so dropped my direct debit to £1 per month. One year later they send a meter maid round and I get another letter demanding about 2 grand, fucking twats

I'm on a smart meter for gas and electricity the problem is the electricity is on an old Smart meter that needs a software update so I have to keep submitting readings the old fashioned way.
Checked on moneysupermarket and the cheapest is going to be staying with Shell, but it's still £60 a month more.
Time to seriously look at Solar again!

I can't get a engineer to visit to hook my smart meters up properly, covid was the reason for last weeks cancellation, like the previous 4 visits they missed.
They actually let me off quite a bit of money due to mistakes they made with my account, supposed to be pay meter but both are just always on and I can't top up if I try.
Not complaining but do get anxiety about it and try to still turn everything off.

I’d imagine so.
I’m a prole on a prepayment meter (meter was like it when I moved in). Couldn’t change it all last year due to covid. Hopefully they don’t increase the prepayment cap more than monthly users, might get some traction to reduce prepayment people burden if everyone suffers equally.

My electricity contract isn't up until June next year and I'm hoping prices will come back down a bit once they've put the fire out. I've just checked, and were I renewing today the cheapest increase to my current bill would be £815, taking my annual charge to a shade over £2200.

Our electricity bill has always been reasonable given its also the heating and hot water. However interaction with E-On is like a journey back in time.
Any dimple requests or queries with customer service is like a task for Hecules. From the non functional voice recognition to their CRM and surly staff.
I have a letter, with a reference number. Nope not recognised how about a 30 minute discussion where you take my details repeatedly. Joy.

I'd think they'd up it in a few months once the credit was used, but nope. Got stung like you, but thankfully we paid monthly. The next 6 months were spensive, then the clowns did the very same fucking thing. Thankfully i was aware & bumped payments back up to an average level. I have now left them

We owed them so much they wouldn’t accept just raising the direct debit, they demanded full payment or working out some sort of “credit arrangement”. Just paid it off and binned them, French twats

Our last house came with EDF. Gas meter was broken, arranged for someone to come three times, had three no shows. After four years of us putting the same reading in every time we got a letter saying something must be wrong. Fortunately we had records of arranging repairs that never came so they were at fault and could only backdate six months of charges. 3.5 years of free gas.

I'm with Octopus and have had the full super green (with carbon-offset gas) as I didn't mind paying a bit more to be a bit cleaner, but that rate for me is going up about 50%. The only tariff I can see that shows any reasonable estimated increase for the year is the variable one tied to wholesale prices, but I don't trust it. It's currently showing as only £10 a month estimated more, but if prices spike again when Putin pulls the strings I imagine it will shoot skyward.
I suppose I'll go with that since there's no early termination fees with Octopus.

I mentioned this subject in Jono's discord channel earlier today. I was aware that prices had gone up but I never thought it'd be this high. We had a fixed deal with Green Network Energy which went into administration in January and that resulted in Ofgem placing all its customers with EDF on a welcome deal which ends for me on the 3rd October.
I was looking today and the best one came back as Octopus variable with a saving of -£235 with monthly DD going from £55 to £71. No penalty for leaving so hopefully when prices do fall (if they ever do) I'll fix again for what seems to be 2 years minimum. None of the fixed deals looked great at the moment.

Apparently my best bet is variable too now. I've never been on a variable rate.
I suppose this winter is going to be Fucking expensive!

Just settling down to my first nights sleep on a glorified sponge (that's if my neighbours ever finally stop finding new doors to slam). I'm hoping I'll wake refreshed and thinking life is wonderful.
However, I'm sure I just heard the whine of a mosquito.
