It's about 89.3411~% (recurring) why I love the PC so much, regardless of the operating system.
Emulation is the be all and end all of gaming. Any game from any platform that's over 5 years old is there to be had and it's the goldmine that never ends. So in this thread we're going to talk about the best emulator for whatever it is you want to play.
Right now my main squeeze is Xenia because I can play all my beloved shmups on it. It's a 360 emulator that has decent compatibility, is under constant development and does a pretty good job at most everything. It has it's issues, but with a little knowhow and some config wiggle, it's got it where it counts.
Emulation!

Having grown up in a console-less world, my main emulator is Dosbox. I dug out a Tomb Raider CD a couple of days ago and first spent an hour finding and trying to get to work a drive to put it in.
Also, it’s its. America must be getting to you, next you’ll be telling us you could care less about stuff.

Nice, I was on dosbox yesterday playing some syndicate. It looks shit now but back then I thought it was amazing.
The other emu I'm currently running is cemu as I'm slowly playing my way through breath of the wild in all its shaded hi-res glory

Playing through Metroid Prime on Dolphin with the windscreen fix and ridiculous levels of supersampling is such a lovely experience. Just a shame Nintendo can't pull their fingers out and deliver the goods themselves, but it probably wouldn't be a patch on this due to the Switch's lack of horsepower. I love just being able to brute force something like that on PC.

I need to fiddle with Xenia a bit more as I only tried the Goldeneye remaster on it so far. I missed a couple of years where Xbox and 360 emulation jumped up a lot.
I see even PS4 has preliminary emulation now.

It still amazes me what level of emulation they achieved with PCSX3. Even on my semi-decent laptop I can emulate Resistance, Ridge Racer et al almost fluently. Vivat Las Emulatores.

The part of emulation I always struggle with is the getting the ROMs bit. I guess as we are now all only unofficially associated with commercial websites it is probably safe to ask where do people recommend going to get such things? Whenever I get the urge to get hold of them I normally end up at dodgy looking websites that may or may not just be full of spyware and viruses. Those that do look fine have excruciatingly slow download speeds.
I particularly would like to be able to download just a big bundle of a system's games. Recently thought about playing some old Amiga games, after they announced they were releasing the mini A500 with piffling 25 games.
Also wouldn't mind exploring the back catalogue of the PlayStation consoles. Managed to get a hold of PS5 a week or so ago and been playing Astro's Playroom. Such a lovely celebration of PlayStation's history, but I don't really know any of the references having always been a desk-bound gamer until recent years.

We should probably be a bit cautious with that kind of thing still, as proboards are our overlords now.
You can get a huge amount of Amiga ROMs on archive.org IIRC.

I used to have an emulator at uni that played SMASH TV which was my best mates favourite game of all time. Any ideas where I might find such a thing now? Would happily buy it now but I'm pretty sure it's never getting a re-release due to reasons.

I still have my Wii U to hand but i did a 260 hour playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles X on CEMU on my PC and it was GLORIOUS! Mainly because my Wii U drive sounded like a herd of grunting Cattle fucking in a Hovercraft 90% of the time so it was nice to play XCX in relative silence and the only issues i had were some checkerboard texturing mainly in Downtown LA and MAD slowdown at certain spots in Downtown LA again. Aside from that it was 2560x1440 60fps awesomeness!
Been using DosBox and SCUMMVM for years to emulate my old DOS Games.

Thanks. Looks like a great site for all sorts of things, not just ROMs.

I love just being able to brute force something like that on PC. Oooh. I've been hoping for a decent MetroidPrimeLike on PC for years... but no one seems to want to make one. I imagine the issue with emulating Gamecube games is that you wouldn't be able to use the original discs, so you'd have to source the roms from somewhere? PS/ While I know this may be sacrilege on the PC forum, most of the fun I've had with emulation recently has been on the Wii It's the last console that I could be bothered to softmod. Clearly it won't emulate anything recent, but RetroArch runs on it and so I've been using it for n64 games and nes/snes/genesis etc.. games such as Sonic. Plus there's this weird trend of releasing new retro games as roms for old consoles, so instead of doing the logical thing and downloading the PC version of Micro Mages, I downloaded the NES rom on my PC, transfered it to an SD card and played it on the Wii using an emulator. Good times! (https://morphcatgames.itch.io/micromages , was in the Itch bundle)

They use the network interface and some homebrew to pull the files from the GC disks. If you own the games then it shouldn't be an issue.
Let's keep talk of where to get stuff out of here though. A little google and some perseverance I'm sure you can find whatever you want.

So I've had a 10th gen i7 NUC sitting on my desk for a while from a project that never really worked out. Was looking for my Pi 2 when I realised that my dream emulation machine for the sitting room was already sitting right in front of me on my desk.
Currently loading up Lakka on it and charging my 8bitdo SNES controller. This thing should be absolutely perfect!

Dolphin I've used for a while and having picked up a Pi 4 in going to figure out which of the emulation OS I'm going to stick on it. RetroPi seems favourite but open to suggestions?

Great, this thread has got me thinking about what I've got lying around that I can stick a custom firmware.
Might dust off the Wii U.
What I normally do with old devices is have great fun researching, installing the CFW, installing MAME and all the roms, then never touch it again.

I had great fun with a Wii U, it's all simple enough and trial and error with sd card builds. Can even hook up a nice external HDD for all those roms.

Yeah, I had lots of fun (not) getting my Vita working with homebrew stuff yesterday, then realised I didn't actually want to play anything on the small screen when I've got two big screens I can use instead. Guess it's all set up for whenever I inevitably have another commute, though.
Having a bit of a headache with this NUC too in fairness. Can't seem to pair my Xbox One controller, on board WiFi doesn't work, and then when I finally plugged it into the TV and started a game, there's no bloody sound!

I'm not much for mobile/handheld gaming, but I was surprised by just how well ScummVM worked with old LucasArts adventures on my phone a while back. Touch controls are mostly fine (Full Throttle had some issues) and they look good on a small screen. No real hassle to set up and helped me get through a couple of very long train rides.

Oh hey so Dodonpachi SaiDaiOuJou has been a bit of a white whale as far as emulating the arcade board goes. There hasn't been a publicly available dump of it until just a few days ago when a mysterious person who goes by the name cavedweller uploaded it to a random emulation forum and promptly vanished again. And it's a weird romhack called Dodonpachi SaiDaiOuJou & Knuckles with the anime babes stripped out and replaced with hello kitty, Knuckles and a Turok velociraptor. But those have been patched out and the original art returned (for the most part) by another member of that forum.
All in all fun stuff and great news for any Cave fans.
I'm not linking it; you have all the info you need above to find it yourself.

Bizarre release. But at least it is out there in some form now. I still haven't played my 360 version I bought in 2014, so still in its sealed CE... Bloody huge box too.
I imagine getting Deathsmiles II versions will be harder as it got an odd release as basically a 3 level demo before assumedly getting online patched into newer revisions. They only had the first release while I was living there though.

The 360 version is a little rough for slowdown accuracy and so on, but you can play it with Xenia.

The first time I was able to play Chrono Trigger was with a SNES emulator. When I played the Nintendo DS version years later, I was disappointed by the script changes, specifically because this line was removed:
