Been to the Marble Factory in Bristol a couple of times, no issue with sound quality at all. *Much* better than the Bristol Academy. But that's an extremely low bar. In terms of venue size Bristol is pretty catered. Academy is supposedly 1600, but the layout is so terrible so it's only 1600 on paper. Marble Factory can do 1600 easily, and is much better. SWX is 1100, and the Bristol Beacon can do 2,124 fully standing. Only been there once though, but sound quality for Fever Ray was pretty great Fleece has a 450 capacity and is pretty good, stage is unusually high so shorter than average people can actually see the band fairly easily. Thekla can hold 400 and I've seen some good gigs there, though being on a boat it's longer than it is wide and being stuck at the back isn't great viewing. Exchange can hold 250, and is a great venue, Crofters Rights is a bit smaller I think. Right on the smallest end you have the Gryphon with a capacity of 50, so tends to be smaller or upcoming metal bands, but they've had some known names there in there in the past. Then for bigger acts you can get gigs in Ashton Gate with 32000 in concert mode. There's definitely a leap from Academy / Marble Factory to the stadium but that's the nature of things everywhere I guess. Not really sure where I'm going with the post but ended up looking up venue capacity and wanted to share my research so it doesn't feel like a total waste of time. in Bristol we're doing well new smaller venues too who seem to be thriving against the odds these days. Dareshack at 200 capacity and Strange Brew (330) are both excellent venues with good promoters / bookers too. Worth having both of those on your radar, now two of my favourite places to see bands in Bristol. I've been to a fair few gigs and club nights at Marble Factory and sound was always good or acceptable. Motion generally had a bad rep for shit sound 5 or more years ago, I remember some shockingly bad PA on occasions, but they seem to have improved things since.

I too like both of them but for me that’s an easy Prodigy. I can’t even imagine what that is going to sound like live. Plus Johnny Marr is always out and about. Although I don’t know what the Prodge will be like without Flint and their last consistently great album was Always Outnumbered. Prodigy are always excellent fun live! Last saw them in November at Ally Pally, they were brilliant as ever.

I have been to Strange Brew - saw Divide and Dissolve there, and instrumental doom / drone metal band.
Given how loud and bass heavy that music, the sound quality was remarkable. Managed to avoid the red lining and distortion I've heard at other doom gigs.
Also have Rough Trade doing smaller gigs, seeing Poison Ruïn there later this year, and The Crown, The Louisiana, The Thunderbolt occasionally gets something decent too.
So yes; lots of decent venues!

Brixton Academy is my favourite venue as well. I’ve only been once - the weekend of Hawkwind’s Hawkestra all-nighter - but I’ve seen so many videos shot there it feels very familiar. The Faith No More Real Thing-era live album and video from it are one of my favourites even if the track order is totally rearranged between the two.

Fat White Family - The Troxy (London)
I've seen FWF a lot over the 10 years they have been together, from tiny pub gigs through to festivals. No two shows have ever been the same. Whilst last night might not have been them at their very best, the expanded catalogue allows them to demonstrate just how good they are live, and allowed for a near 2hr runtime.
I don't think there is a better frontman (or women) for a live show than Lias.
Whether on stage or on one of his frequent trips through the crowd, he's captivating. Messy, chaotic, unpredictable, but seemingly in total control, he's completely absorbed in the process and exudes energy (and debauchery).
The band were on form as usual - despite several changes over the years (Saul is still a big miss, I loved Lightnin' Jacks drumming, and it seems brother Adam has now officially been kicked out left) they are incredibly tight - and the soundmix was excellent.
The crowd were all onside from the moment they walked on stage. I really can't do a pit like I used too, and I had planned to take it relatively easy, but you can't help getting swept up by it all, and I spent the last hour pogoing with a massive grin on my face right in amongst it.
It seems they might be coming to the end of their time together as a band - there's been several hints from Lias in recent interviews and now with Adam gone, and a Moonlandingz tour scheduled for later in the year, I suspect there will at least be a hiatus. If this is the end then they are going out on a high - if not, bring on the next show!

Isle of Wight Festival weekend! First time going for the whole weekend in 12 years (since my youngest was born). Have done the odd day here or there since but that's it. Very excited. Weather looks good (a.bit of rain tomorrow night aside). Place is buzzing already/people moaning about the traffic, depending on where you live or side of the fence you're on.

Yeah, think so, timings work well. More in the Big Top (the smaller stage) than the Main Stage this year. Also taking the kids - the eldest (14) has great designs on going off gallivanting, which I don't mind but his mainland mate is a liability. And also staying with us on Friday night, so will be responsible for someone else's child. Not quite the child free relaxing times of old!

Hopefully you get the right one.

Live update. Bootleg Beatles. Absolutely amazing again. The Darkness, great fun, Justin is a brilliant front man. Crowded House - decent for the retro slot but perhaps a but pedestrian for some. The Streets - awesome. Now waiting for Johnny Marr. Soz Prodge

Not there, watching it on Sky Arts but The Darkness at the Isle of Wight - absolutely astonishing. If only they had more of a catalogue they would be the best rock band IMO. But they may be the best rock band live in any case. My god this band has such talented guitar, drums, vocals, and Frankie Poullain.

Living here, it's hard and expensive to see top acts off the island, so whilst Marr is always touring, the chances of him coming south arr slim. I dunno, will play it by ear and see how the day goes. Had no idea you lived there sorry! Would you recommend it, where I live it’s grim of course, which is why people like Johnny Marr’s old band exist!

So glad I chose Marr. He was astonishing, proper lifetime stuff for me. Played Panic, Please, please, How Soon is Now, Getting away with it and finished with There is a Light. Spine-tinglingly good.

The Darkness live are the absolute dog’s bollocks , can’t go wrong! They’ve also got a bigger catalogue than most think but not so many albums yet since Rufus Taylor joined as drummer and raised their bar even higher. Too many write them off for their early classic and cheesy singles but their recent albums (especially Easter is Cancelled) imo are superb!

Yeah, the drummer was excellent.
Today it's Feeder, PSB and if the kids are still standing, a bit of Suede. There's some pop for my daughter, so think she'll have a great day. Also some relatively new solo artists, no longer with their bands (Tom Meighan, Jake Shears and Bradley Simpson - don't know their solo stuff).

hicksyYeah I’m familiar with all their work. There are always a smattering of good to great tunes but I do think that only the first album is a classic as an album. The latest one Motorheart is very good though. I saw them at Leeds Festival at the height of their pomp and then again last year. A lot of the schtick they did at IOW was exactly the same and it brought it back big time. One thing the IOW didn’t get from the last tour was the epic keytar solo! I watched The Prodigy later - thought they were excellent and Maxim is one cool customer. The Keith tribute was nicely done. Looks like as an audio visual spectacle it would have been almost overwhelming to be there in person.

Long old day in the sun yesterday! Feeder were great, got a good spot. S Club were a whole load of fun too. My favourite set was probably a small 3 piece band unashamedly in the Jimi Hendrix Experience mould called Darnell Cole and the Vibe. Absolutely excellent. PSB set was special too but I don't think the crowd were as in to it for some reason.

squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
.....go my ears.
Back from the FF gig at the London Stadium and it was loud! Hot Milk were....energetic! Being the first band on is probably a tough slot at the best of times, but they gave it everything. Not really my cup of tea mid-afternoon, but they were alright. Courtney Barnett did a longer set and I'd like to see her again at a smaller venue. I love her lyrics and songs, and she got the place grooving along nicely.
FF did a long set with only a small break before the finale and bloody hell they work hard for that slot. I was knackered just being in the crowd, they looked shattered by the end of it! Moved a few times and ended up on the edge of the crowd by the right screen and it was weirdly empty of people so we ended up about 10 metres away from Dave so that was great. Couple of knobbers with their backs to the stage having a chat though the whole set like they were at a coffee morning. Jesus wept. Why'd you buy the ticket? One girl was dancing on all fours like a weird Half Life face crab and the security guys got her safe. God knows what she'd taken, but she was holding the floor like it was a ceiling.
Glad I went and equally glad I got a hotel nearby to crash and have a proper breakfast before heading home.

Sad I missed Feeder but Pet Shop Boys looked really good on Sky. The crowd seemed super into the Swedish woman who won Eurovision last year too.
Slightly disappointed they showed some of the wife beater who got kicked out of Kasabian’s set though.

Aaaah, is that why he was booted. Walked past that stage mid-set and it was busy.
Will check out Feeder coverage. Had my 11 year old on my shoulders for Buck Rogers, she'll be stoked if shown. Too heavy for any longer though!
Today is all about Green Day and Simple Minds. Not moving from the main stage. Having an absolutely ruinously expensive blast. £7 a beer, £12-15 food all adds up. But definitely coming again next year. Early bird payment plan for locals means its £50-60 a month for the 4 if us. No brainer.

She must be having an unreal time. My little brother turned 13 while at his first festival (Leeds 99) and its still his favourite.
Clearly my folks were very trusting to let me take him with me since I was still at high school myself.

I think I went to the first Isle of Wight festival after they restarted it, but I can't remember any of the bands I saw...

Disappearing with mates, only contacting us for money for food/drink (and this utterly terrifying ride he went on called AirMaxx or something - genuinely surprised it's allowed!). Daughter was surprisingly disengaged, given she's the music lover of the 2. All a bit much I think.
