I’ve been having a real itch to replay DS2. But with Elden ring just round the corner I don’t really want to burn myself out. If it's any consolation, I'm currently playing DS2, DS3, DeS and Sekiro, and I still can't wait for Elden Ring. Burnout imminent. That is some commitment!

Bloody loved playing Burnout when I used to visit my brother's in my pre-console days. We'd go split screen. Good times.

I think Burnout Paradise is still on sale on PSN. It's not quite the same as the PS2 titles but still pretty fun.

Guess who got all the way to the orange fog gate in Tomb of Giants and ONLY THEN went "hmm, wonder how I open this gate?"
Seems I'm off to New Londo Ruins now instead - I talked to Frampt last playthrough (years ago), might as well talk to Kaathe this time.
Edit- or maybe the painted world and a couple more bosses first...

hedben at least you’ve got the bonfire to warp back to. You can run past the whole tomb of the giants mobs quite easily back to the boss if you can’t be bothered fighting them Most people don’t bother but I start that boss with a Divine weapon and switch once I’ve killed the little skeletons

Burnout Paradise, doesn't feel like a Burnout game to me at all, then I find Split Second in a job lot of games. I boot it up expecting nothing and, hold on this feels like Burnout?
So I buy Burnout to get not-Burnout and Split Second to get Burnout?
The only way to make sense of this is to put the Split Second disc in the Burnout Paradise box and the Burnout Paradise disc can just be a coaster.

malek86 Continued from the Abandoned Games thread: I'm not sure if 'survival' is appropriate because, like roguelikes, your repeated death is expected, and almost inevitable. It's the 'death' in 'procedural death labyrinth'. If there are other things that basically all soulslikes have in common, it's that enemies respawn when you die or rest, but everything else is permanent: you don't get more than one savefile per character and you don't get consumables back if you die after you use them. So they could be described as... Continuous Murder RPGs? That doesn't quite convey the core idea, and just putting 'RPG' in there is inelegant. Open to different suggestions.

The thing about Soulslikes is that they're all blatantly emulating Dark Souls. Doom popularised first person shooters, not a subgenre, so it makes sense that the term would eventually die out as others did things completely different to Doom with first person. Soulslike is perfectly fine to me, as those games clearly exist to be games like Dark Souls
I don't think there are any survival elements to Dark Souls really but, Bloodborne especially, dose evoke a similar tension to survival horror games

Isn’t Demons souls the actual true original where it all started?

Isn’t Demons souls the actual true original where it all started? If you want to be really pedantic, the King's Field series had some of the Soulslike mechanics back on the PSX

Isn’t Demons souls the actual true original where it all started? Isn't Wolfenstein the actual true original where FPS really started?
No. There is always prior art as far back as you can go. The competition then tries to emulate the most successful version. Doom was much more successful than Wolfenstein. Dark Souls was much more successful than Demon's Souls.

Had time to go back to beat Manus today on my SL30 run
I think he has nearly 7000 HP and I was only doing about 100 damage a hit, so it ended up as war of attrition. Also I find him very difficult to dodge and had to heavily rely on a shield, for me he’s much tougher than Artorias
Don’t think I’ll do Kalameet though

It's an exercise in learning when to fuck him up and when to fucking run. Manus has way more tricks

Yeah I might have a go at some stage
I watched a video explaining how some dude did Demons, Dark I-III, Bloodborne and Sekiro consecutively without taking one hit - like a 16 hour marathon session, no magics or shields, with zero hits
Absolutely mind blowing that but proves the level of mastery people can achieve in these games
I don’t think I could reach the Taurus Demon without taking a hit

That vid sounds impressive though, got a link?

Yeah I could definitely parry every enemy up to Taurus no problem but I’d get hit by a rogue firebomb or bit by a rat or something
Very impressive to run 6 games in a row without a hit, especially Sekiro- that’s like superhuman to beat that in one go without a hit

So what would you folks say is the worst designed enemy in all of FromSoftware's games? It can be a boss, miniboss, regular enemy or even a specific npc opponent. I don't mean the one that necessarily gave you the most trouble, or you shit your pants when you see one; I mean something that stands out from the others with a noticeably poor design. Maybe it looks or moves foolish(ly) or out of place, or has it poorly telegraphed attacks and/or wonky hitboxes leading to deaths due to design fault rather than player fault.
For my candidate it would have to be the Flame Salamander in DSII. Just everything about it is terrible. It's turning animation (or lack of) looks ridiculous and attempting close combat is a random nightmare due to its stamina ignoring charge which has no wind-up. Your only close up option is to lock yourself between its front and back legs and rotate around as it merrily spins in place, all the while its friends spam fireballs at you. The ones in the Memory of the Old Iron King at least don't spin, in fact they happily just sit there as you cut them to pieces; but their fireball spewing adds to that location's utter crapness enormously (in my book my worst Souls area also). The only one that is not bullshit is the one that shoots down the charred passage in FotFG. The entrance is ominous and with careful timing you can get the goodies, but not without a bit of adrenaline. All other encounters with this beasty are terrible, so hence it wins the wooden spoon for worst enemy for me.

Bed of Chaos is complete shite
I don’t have a big problem with the approach area, but the boss in a collapsing arena with shite attacks is toss
They’d have been better upping the attack/health of the pyromancer sister npc you meet outside and fighting her in there.

There are a few enemies that make me wanna ask "Why do these exist?" like the DS3 white-robed jailers or the DS1/DS3 statue demons but the worst non-boss enemy would be the giant dragon butts all over Izalith for obvious reasons.
For worst boss, I vote DS3's Oceiros. His phase 2 is never not a huge pain in the ass to fight, which is ironic since his ass is what you'll be seeing the most as he charges from one corner of the arena to the other, leaving you to chase after him. God save you if you get in front of him because there's no telling when he'll do his zero-windup charge attack that has a hitbox extending in front of him like a bulldozer.
I can't decide whether I love or hate how Oceiros fits into the other DS3 dragon boss fights. With all the dragons that come after him, the game repeatedly hits you over the head with the same lesson: to kill a dragon, go for the head. Ancient Wyvern has you plunge attack the head for an instant kill to make this abundantly clear. When you later face the storm drake, you also need to hit the head to do any kind of damage and to stun it for a critical. And finally, in the DLC, the same is true for Midir, who you can stun and crit for almost a quarter of his health bar.
Now, I think you can also do this with Oceiros but with the way he moves and attacks, his head never stays in your reach for more than a few seconds. Contrary to all the other dragons, the most efficient way to kill him is to hit his ass and legs, so he's not just shitty in his own right, but he breaks the rule the game establishes about dragon bosses! Or maybe that's just the game commenting on how he's a fake dragon, I dunno. I hate him either way.

I generally like the Forest Hunters / "Clan of Forest protectors". But if we're talking janky behaviour uncharacteristic of the rest of the game, I'd mention the Forest Protector mage, who loves spamming Soul Arrow directly into the tree I'm stood behind.
