This is sounding more and more ropey.
I love Dishonored, still to play Prey and Death Loop, but it’s a bit sad how poorly the reception to this seems to be landing.

I think it seems to be that this is not what people think of when they think of Arkane.
That 30fps cap at launch is... baffling. You're designing for next gen only, I know getting 60fps is hard, it is, it really is, but as a first party game how are you not aiming for that as a priority, especially for a game which doesn't look that particularly "next gen".

I’ll be waiting for the 60fps update that’s for sure. I don’t have a 4K tv so just losing frame rate for nothing here otherwise.

They are calling it 'quality mode' but if youre launching with only one option its just 'mode'

I despair with Microsoft sometimes, I really do. I know gaming forums and social media are echo chambers at the best of times but they'll get torn a new one from all corners for only launching with a 30fps option. Honestly would have just been better announcing a release date that included the 60fps update.
Sigh.

Meh don't see the problem. Yeah 60 is better but if the game is good the game is good. It's not Titanfall 2 so the locked 30 will be fine.

30fps isn't ok for a first person game.

Not with this hardware. Not anymore. And not from a first party studio.
And add to that, the game itself is getting really mixed previews. I’ve seen far more negative than positive, and the positive is generally coming with a lot of ‘if’s.

Not on any hardware, shooters arent good at 30fps. They just feel bad.

Well for what seems like a slow paced co op shooter it's totally fine to me to enjoy it the same. I'll be playing it with pc players but I'll be just fine. I loved 2077 at 20fps on PS4.

If its a competitive FPS or a twitchy one, sure, but I could accept 30fps. Heck, I have a guilty pleasure for the original Killzone and thats 20fps at best!
But I can't honestly say Redfall was a day one download, personally. Its certainly going to deflate enthusiasm with fans though, being locked to 30fps right now.

It just looks so uninspiring. A pot pourri of first person shooter ideas from the last 10 years or so, with a vampire theme. And vampires are boring so that doesn't help.
Maybe it'll excel as a coop.

I'm confused. The 30fps is definitely a bummer (although, as it is an FPS and only Xbox, I'll play it on PC), but seems there is general negativity around it. I thought all the recent previews were really positive though. Just on the previous page of this very thread is a list of about a dozen previews saying how good it was and even some saying it is a game of year material.
Are those just hype pieces and others have been less enthusiastic? Must admit, I haven't read the articles.
Love Arkane games, but was a little disappointed when this initially seemed like a co-op shooter. More interested now it appears to be closer to a Far Cry like open world game.

I've seen maybe four previews from the main people I follow on YouTube and all were positive.

The IGN preview I watched was so bad people in the comments were wondering if they were sabotaging the game on purpose. It looked like the journalist had never played a video game before.

That seems to be a major hiring point for IGN.

Played Far Cry 5 in co-op with a mate at 30FPS and it was absolutely fine for me.
Then again I'm playing on a 20 year old 720p plasma so visual fidelity isn't at the top of my list.

It's not that 30fps isn't okay, but knowing that there's a 60fps mode coming later just makes you wonder why they don't just delay the game.
I still say it's because they need to further optimize for the Series S. Conspiracy theory and all, I know, but I just can't shake the feeling it's because of that.

The quality mode is at 1440p for S, most if not all 60fps games on Series S run at 900-1080p. The fact that you're building an exclusive game should actually make it easier to optimise for that experience, no?

We do know that a 60fps mode is coming, so I'm not saying the S can't do it, but maybe they need to further optimise it to squeeze just that extra bit of performance to make it run better? Could be that Arkane isn't all that used to UE4, after years of running id Tech forks.

My initial first thought was that it was the same issue as Gotham Knights which is also on ue4.

This really blew up as a "Big Deal" on twitter yesterday.
Would I prefer 60fps on day one? yes but is it a big deal(TM)? No
This is going to become more of a thing as we get further into this generation. I can see the argument for delaying it further to have 60fps but I also think 90% of the audience will play it 4k30 and be totally fine with that.

My initial first thought was that it was the same issue as Gotham Knights which is also on ue4. Maybe, but GK never even got a 60fps patch, whereas we know one is coming here. Also, the previews were all at 60fps, so you gotta wonder why they suddenly decided that it was not good enough. Of course it's also possible that the previews were all played on PC.

Plus it will be either good or not regardless of the 60 FPS, if it's up to usual Arkane standards then it really won't be much of a knock on the game because I'll spend 90% of my time crouched looking in drawers and reading notebooks.

If 30fps was the only option, I'd either suck it up, or just play it on PC. If there's a chance of a 60fps mode in the near future, I'll just hold off for how... It's not like there isn't already enough to keep me busy with TotK coming out at the same time, then D4 a month later...

Skill Up mentioned that in his weekly round-up when talking about this game. The IGN exclusive preview video has something like 1.5k upvotes to 19k downvotes. He talks about both the skill of the reviewer and the quality of the gameplay in it. The reviewer thing, he says, can often just be down to being forced to play preview content on a control system you don't like/use (controller) vs one you do (kb/m). It shouldn't really be like this anymore but it doesn't surprise me. I see it daily at work too.

So only host progress saves in co-op too. Skill-Up has another run down of all the controversy around this one again in his games round up this week.
