No, after the opening tutorial stuff, the dialogue between characters is generally just plot/exposition - although there are quests in sections of the pause menu where you won't know how to complete them unless you read and understand it. I'm not sure what you mean by Hack and Slash (I thought that was specifically stuff like Bayonetta and DMC), but I'd say the combat is challenging but not impossible for a 9 year old. My 11yo likes Minecraft Dungeons and didn't really want to try Hades after seeing me play it - but it's a great game for any age if you can get the hang of the combat.

No, not really. You can 100% skip the dialogue, if you want. Its the end game stuff you kind of need to pay attention to but not really. You could complete most quests by accident

My friend’s boy is 8 and he enjoys it. Not sure he “gets” it or is particularly good at it but he likes the action.
I think he mostly plays with his mam because she is a real player.

My 8 year old started on this last night, after months of watching me play. He's not very good, but he's having fun.
It also seems to have sparked an interest in Greek mythology, because he keeps coming back from school with related books.
Games are educational after all!

Yeah I’d have loved a Greek/Roman mythology game at that age to live out my Harryhausen fantasies

Did he look like that when he started? Time for some much needed sleep and something to eat
