I don’t really understand the question. What’s the ceiling speaker thing?
I personally like a sub. I don’t have it super bassy but it just adds a little umami to everything.

Agreed. I'm no audiophile, but everything is much more rounded with a sub. It then becomes a question of trade offs with price.

I guess the question is at what stage do you introduce a sub? Certainly not for single speaker (ceiling or bookshelf) rooms but rather for open plan areas where you'd have 3 or 4 pairs of speakers. I'd never even considered one and thought them purely for home theatre solutions tbh.

I run 2 subs in stereo with harbeth speakers. They can work great in a 2 channel system if done right. Not sure about ceiling mounted speakers though

What's it like on/off? Subtle or night and day? What are you listening on it, music/tv/gaming?

I'm tempted by a set of Grado Hemps.
Hmm...

I've seen those pads recommended by Z Reviews and DMS. Ordered some this afternoon for my SR80i set. I don't have a problem with the stock ones on these but I may as well try those out.

What's it like on/off? Subtle or night and day? What are you listening on it, music/tv/gaming? Depends on system I guess. I use it only for 2.1 channel music. Better tighter bass and more 3d soundstage are the main things. With Rel sub you do not get extended bass so much unless you pay lots but it does still give a good punchy bass. 2 are much better than one annoyingly. I am also using with a trinov amethyst though which has bass management and amazing room correction built in. 2 subs with no bass management software would be tricky to integrate I would imagine!

Here are images of my stylus'. There were 3 packaged up. The first is the one I'm using. I have used the second and the 3rd I think is the diamond tipped one, which I have not used yet and by the looks of it I don't think I should use. imgur.com/a/qkAyjWRimgur.com/a/wDkHUHUimgur.com/a/IBX2kJuAck, don't use them! Honestly, it's not worth the risk of permanently damaging your vinyl, no matter how good it looks. When a needle fucks a record, you don't hear the damage it's doing, because as it fucks it, the needle has moved on, so you think it's all good. Then when you play it again, you hear it and have to chuck the record away. It's really not worth it. You can get an ortofon cartridge for not much money, and you wont be fucking up your records.

The 2 channel stuff is a lot cheaper to be fair. Not cheap though but well worth it. I had a nad pre amp that used Dirac live room correction but this is a completely different level

Yeah, they seem to review really well but then you always get someone saying 'mine lasted a month'. Basically, Ive got a bit of budget and really want some HD600 (250 on thomann) but I dont think they would be vastly different from my HD560s (I do *hate* that single yoke design, tho), so have been looking at hifiman.
Everything looks spot on other than the fact that they seem to self destruct after a few months.

Are you specifically looking for open back planars?

Not specifically but it is a gap in the rack. I have been wearing closed back all summer (akg-k371 and some Sony 7506) because Im sat right next to my aircon but winter is coming and all that, so I will probably be switching up to open backs.
Ive got the S80e and HD560s and you know how it is. New shiny. It feels like everyone should have some HD600 but the 560s are genuinely excellent and it feels like the money might be better spent elsewhere.

I'd like to hear a pair of HD600s. Legendary status.

If it’s just open backs you want then you have a huge selection and lots of good non-Chinese options, but open back planars are quite unusual for some reason. I’ve never listened to a pair but closed back planars are my favourite headphones. I’d be quite interested to hear some open back ones.

I was also looking at the monoprice monolith (the closed back ones) but the reviews seem quite variable.

For close back you’ve got a lot of options but you probably still can’t beat the Oppo pm3 at that price. There are Audeze’s around that price point too, including the Penrose gaming cans which have become my go to headphones these days.

There were a few quid off those in the Amazon summer sale so I’ve got a feeling in my water that there may be a Black Friday deal to be had.
Probably worth waiting to see what turns up then anyway.
So they’re good? I vaguely remember a few complaints when they came out that that they drivers weren’t equalised or something.

The Penrose? They’re not perfect but pound for pound they’re excellent. Incredibly versatile.

And I do have a massive head…. I think I’ll make a shortlist and see what pops on Black Friday.
Speaking of which, I just had the record store day Black Friday mail shot and that’s looking expensive.
Tricky - Blowback, Ghostpoet - DDAC, Rza - Digital Bullet and Thundercat - Apocalypse are all in there, four albums I absolutely love.

I've got a pair of Sines, the ones that come with a lightning connector and dac. They sound good although like most planars they are quite tough to drive.

I’m surprised they’re hard to drive. Don’t they come with a lightening cable?
