My first computer was a VIC-20. Me too, came with a whopping 3K RAM expansion cartridge that nothing I owned used. Jelly Monsters was a better use of my cartridge port I do always remember Rockman on VIC-20 being a lot better than the crappy Spectrum version (which was platformy IIRC)

Hello from another RPS refugee! Seeing as we're sharing our first computers here, mine was an Acorn Electron, which was basically a cut-down BBC Micro. I got it when I was 12, and spent my formative years playing Mr Wiz, Repton and Elite on it.
After that I got an Atari ST, before moving onto a string of PCs, starting with a 486SX25.
I'll probably be lurking in the shadows here mostly, but maybe I'll post in the screenshot thread occasionally, that was my favourite thread on the RPS forums.

Speaking of retro PC's does anyone remember Xtree gold or something like that. I had it on a donkeys old Amstrad I had as a kid. It was some form of early o/s or possibly just a registry organiser. As a kid it just allowed me to find the executables for my Sierra catalogue and sensible soccer!

That and it’s ilk we’re just file explorers weren’t there? Let you see the whole directory tree without the command line. I seem to remember having a few.

Hello from yet another RPS refugee! Quite frankly I don't remember what my first PC was, but I do remember that both Transport Tycoon and Roller Coaster Tycoon were a couple of my first PC games. I still replay them regularly (in OpenTTD and OpenRCT2 form).

I'm very sure it's 'Fonters'. This could lead to a schism, and centuries of murderous civil war. But in the meantime, welcome all.
I also had a Vic-20, but spent every single minute I could playing Elite on my mates Speccy instead. My dad was really pleased with his investment.

No-one better create a 'national font' now we've stupidly brexited. I guess that daft racist who got binned at the start sort of tried. The twat.

Welcome to the RPS crowd Curious, how active was your forum before it was reedpopped? Did most of you make it over?

I've just been over on RPS reading the thread about coming here. It's really quite lovely Don't know if any of you RPS types played Laser Squad Nemesis a very long time ago , but as soon as I win the Euro Lottery I'm giving Julian Gollop a pile of £££ to bring it back, sub free this time, so be ready

Only forum I ever bothered to visit was EG. When we moved here it was like going from 2d to 3d. And then because of closures and mentions I got to see what RPS and Resetera looked like, and realised how shit EG was.
Features and functions wise.

did think it was a wee bit disingenuous when they shuttered the EG forums largely down to the shonky old code you folks put up with, totally ignoring the modern half decent system they had running next door @rps

I'm really missing it now though! (no offence to this lovely forum!)

Mainly a bunch of technical issues with trying to port over all the posts and accounts from the old forum system. Which meant a lot of ongoing threads had messed up things like quotes and images at first, and a lot of people couldn't even log in for a while.
Combine that with a lot of people just not liking a change from something familiar to something unfamiliar and it just created a bunch of complaints and also lost a fair few users in the transition.
Which was a shame, as Discourse turned out to be pretty nice once you got used to it... and most of the issues were fixed within a week or so.
Oh, and there was the problem of it being eye-searingly white by default ;-)

Craigy was working on new features all the time (he was on eg forum quite often), but little came of it and then he took away portable mode since “no one was using it” and then he brought it back but only for the main site and that was a pretty strong indication the forum was well apart from the rest.
EG is/was all custom code, though, no ready-made solution like Discourse. Reading through the RPS forum now I’m not sure I’m a fan of the one long page format, much prefer regular pages like this place has, though it looks very modern!

Oh, and there was the problem of it being eye-searingly white by default ;-) So that's why my vision has been steadily declining for the last three years... Seriously though, as we get closer to October 1st, I'm starting to realize how much I'm actually going to miss that place. It really was lovely hanging around over there these past few years and it also was the last forum I visited daily.
