Just bought an Amiga 500+ from eBay and am in the process of refurbishing it. It’s the cartoon classics box, mint condish, all manuals Etc, even a couple of mags. Mega nostalgia hit.

How yellow is it (and how do you remove that?) It’s quite yellow, especially the keys. Apparently you can use hair bleach and sunlight to sort it, so I’m doing that if the sun comes out again.

ETA: stop at one in ten of the money laundering tanning salons for the sunlight bit.

I was really gutted when I found my old amiga 500 & 1200 when clearing my mum's attic. 500 was dead, 1200 turned on, but couldn't get to the boot screen. I read after that you can replace transistors and stuff, which are the main culprits for degradation in old tech, but lack thr knowledge or skill to even try.

Yeah, the 500 battery always leaks too, it’s quite corroded. It turns on but waiting on a cable to see if it actually boots. The power supply is fucked too. I’ve invested in a soldering iron but no idea what I’m up to. It’s a voyage of discovery

Or… go with the cheapest option and buy an 8bitdo adapter. Then use your fav pads on the device instead. with the adapter, I use my ps5 pad and my 8bitdo m30 and sf30 pro.

£94 including delivery, 256gb with the PS2 pads I think that’s about what I paid for exactly the same items. The hardest part now is waiting for it to arrive from China. I should of mentioned, the pads are functional, but are very cheaply made. They weigh about as a much as a feather. I do recommend the 8bitdo dongle.

There seems to be so many different 'brands', does it matter which one you go with?

Does this do anything better than a Raspberry Pi with a retropi image loaded on it?
For some reason HDMI-CEC doesn't work on mine so it's a bit of a pain to get it up and running.

This is me too, I can't help myself. I'll spend ages setting them up then never play them. Currently waiting for PS4 hacking to catch up with the spare ones I now have. I've just revamped my home office/games room, so looking for some overpriced metal gaming pictures on Displate.

As long as it’s a super console x or super console x pro, I think you are good to go. there’s hardly and difference with the pro version, get it if you can for the slight performance boost. But either will play PS1 era and prior games fine

I'm only really interested in the older stuff, like Amiga, I think the disappointment of finding my old system(s) broken has rekindled my desire to get working versions again.
Can you plug in a keyboard, for pre-gamepad stuff?

On the subject of doing up old computers/consoles, I've done a few this past 18 months, including an Amiga 500.
If you're looking to de-yellow cases (aka to 'retrobrite') I've tried a number of different methods:
Simplest is 'sunbriting', which involves chucking your computer outside when the sun is strong. The idea behind this is that the wavelength of UV that is blocked by windows (which unfortunately let through the wavelength that yellows the plastic) will undo the yellowing. I tried it on my old Dreamcast and SNES. There *was* a noticeable change over time, but this took two weeks of exposure to achieve!
Next is using a 12% peroxide cream smothered over the hardware, then tightly wrapped in cling film to prevent it drying out, and leaving it out in the sun. This is the fastest method and can take just a few hours on a hot day, but you really have to babysit it and keep massaging the cream around every 20-30 minutes or so, or you'll end up with a 'marbled' appearance where the bleaching hasn't been applied evenly. If this happens, you can try again, but every time you do it will increase the chance of over-bleaching the original colour.
Last method is to take a plastic storage tub, half fill it with water and then pour about a litre of *liquid* 12% peroxide in. Submerse your yellowed case and try to find some way to weigh it down as the peroxide in the water forms bubbles on the plastic and it will rise to the surface over time. Leave it in strong sunlight and *never* leave the tub anywhere unventilated or by pets as the fumes are BAD. Use nitrile gloves. This is consistently the best method. Doesn't require babysitting (just make sure your case doesn't float to the top for long) and in good weather you'll have a completely unyellowed case in a day or two.

Man I'm jealous! My Mega Drive was the last console I sold (to buy a Playstation), I've kept every console I've bought since (apart from my 360 which I dumped after RRoD). Sold it to Cash Convertors who I'm sure ripped me off, but as a kid all I cared about was getting enough money to put towards the PS. I sold it with all the games except one random one, European Club Soccer, which I still have, so at least there is that! Still depresses me when I think about selling it, so many of my favourite gaming memories are from the Mega Drive days

Well look at it this way, it probably wouldn't work today anyway and you probably really enjoyed the Ps1 at the time 😊

jimnastics I sold my Amstrad, Master System, Snes, PS1 and some people who worked on my roof stole my Atari 2400 (and Star Wars figures!) from my attic back around 1990.
I had a chipped PS1 off ebay years ago to replace that, never did get mine done and most of those consoles I sold was to fund the next one.

My Super Console X Pro was delivered today - that’s not too bad, 10 days, was expecting to wait a bit longer
Annoyingly it comes with a US power supply - anyone know if you can just use a standard US to UK adapter? I think most are just for tourists and aren’t supposed to be used long term

Does it have a 220v psu in it? If not it's going to go bang the second you plug it in.
