Will Sheff from Okkervil and Bon Iver I'm a fan off (or used to be at any rate) and a different breed imo. They have variety, humour and adventure in their songwriting, not to mention some incredible musicianship and melodies.
The artists I mentioned above have the most mundane lyrics and basic chord changes for most of their stuff. Albeit I've only heard songs via the radio but I'm assuming these are their best cuts - god knows what some of the album tracks are like.

Yeah, I agree they're a cut above. I guess the was a glut of more generic ones that definitely mush into a big amorphous blob.

The progenitors of this awful style of music go way fucking back. An acoustic guitar can be a massive red flag. No, it's not more authentic, or 'stripped down', it's just boring.
And don't get me started on 'unplugged' sessions!

Ed Sheeran is funny when he tries to rap.
But, at risk of my street cred, I don't find him too bad and there is even one song of his that I rather like. Not that I listen to him often.
I don't think I've knowingly listened to any of the others.

This is a rant largely aimed at myself, the idiot who very nearly got scammed by someone claiming to be from o2 who was offering me a free phone upgrade who i think was trying to hijack my account and buy a phone for themselves.
It took me way too long to realise what was happening, so im still a bit worried what they actually ended up having access to. What a dum dum!

People reacting to songs and uploading it to Youtube. Has to be one of the most pointless things going right? They're all the same, every video has 'That sounds nice' 'This is good', 'That was a great song!', no insight, nothing to add other than just raw reactions. Even worse are the ones like 'Reacting to .... for the first time!'. Really? You're in your 30's and you never heard of Bohemian Rhapsody before? Ah huh, sure.
What inspired this post was one video I watched out of curiosity that ended with something like 'If you are a band and would like me to react to your music, send an enquiry to the following email address'. I was just like, I'm pretty sure Iron Maiden is doing ok without your exposure mate.

Reaction videos in general. I don’t need to watch you watch a trailer. I’d rather watch it myself and feel however I feel about it.

I don't get the appeal of reaction videos, and yet they have some undeniable appeal.
I think it's mainly that need for validation that you get when you read a review because you want it to (a) agree with your opinion and show that you're right, or (b) be clearly wrong so you can be outraged. Combined with that feeling when you get your kids to watch Empire Strikes Back and you know that they're about to get blown away by finding out that Vader is Luke's dad. Ha! (or replace that with the end of Sixth Sense, or the red wedding, or whatever)
Though I do worry that I'm contributing to the downfall of civilization. What is that Gogglebox thing on C4? Is that just watching people watch tv? I've never dared click on it.
Youtube song comments for anything older than a year are weird though, because they're always all about how 'this is the best song ever!' and 'this still bangs in 2023' and 'they don't make songs like this anymore'. [edit] oh, and of course every one is also 'this was the best period for music!'

I went down a reaction video rabbit hole during the while COVID years. Mostly music videos but also quite a few reactions to TV shows
I've largely moved on from them these days as the stock phrases become a bit too much, though there are a couple I still like because they take time to break down and discuss the song and add interesting insights. But 95% are pretty clichéd.
But I watched a lot... I think for me it was because it gave me some sense of validation. Here's somebody listening or watching something I enjoy, who also expresses enjoyment.
For more esoteric stuff, it also provides a way to experience the first watch/listen again by proxy (even though, music reactions in particular, are rarely actual first listens). A way to try and relive the transient excitement of a first listen / watch.
Like I say I've largely moved on, but if I come across something particularly exciting I might still fall down a rabbit hole. Did spend a few hours watching Clowncore reactions fairly recently.
I also frequently read reviews after making my mind up about something, but will only pay attention to the ones that share my view. I'm not insecure at all.

I got kinda hooked on the Game of Thrones ones, as part of the whole 'i've already know the books so I know what's coming and it's going to freak people out!' book-snob thing. That and Avengers Infinity War / Endgame trailer reactions.
I don't feel good about it.

There are ones where the reactor is an expert in their field like, a guitar teacher or vocal coach that gives a bit more insight for people like me who aren't musically inclined to let you know that what particular part they heard is hard to pull off and highlights the artist's talent. That stuff has more value I suppose, but just generic people listening to a song and going 'Yeh that was good'? Worthless.

I never used to see the point of reaction videos either, but I have sort of grown to enjoy them over a while. I don't watch ones for things I haven't seen/played, because I think it's the knowledge of what's coming and seeing whether people have the same reactions as you did when you watched something for the first time that's part of the interest.

It could be drivel. If a 'vocal coach' is explaining a singer's technique it's basically all technobabble anyway.

Dave Berman RIP.

I did see an interview with the extreme metal singer Dave Hunt, and he was commenting that he saw somebody react to one his performances, saying Dave used *this* technique or *that* and Dave was like "do I? I've no idea".
Tbh I did like the vocal coach ones a bit because they gave a bit of insight but ultimately they all collapse into the range stock phrases anyway. I've heard far too much about head voice and chest voice.
I do actually like Justin Hawkins's reactions, he's quite an enjoyable guy and occasionally has some fun anecdotes about when he was touring with various bands.

Gogglebox is reaction videos for adults. I don't get the appeal of that show at all.

I have two theories on this;
1. People want the self validation. I.e. "I think this song slaps and I want to see other people confirm my opinions to me. I will turn it off if they don't agree." I consider this a form of masturbation.
2. People can't be bothered to form their own opinion on things, so require someone else to tell them what their opinions are in case someone else asks.
But which do I believe most? You'll need to watch my video reacting to people reacting to stuff on YouTube, on YouTube, to find out.

Why do people do that? I’m not liking or subscribing before I watch a video, much less if it’s my first time on your channel.
