Sorry for your loss Happenstance Ever since I got back from the hospital in July, we've been feeding 3 kittens and their mother, which "deposited" the younglings in our back yard for protection. Even though they have never been inside our house (apart out of curiosity for our kitchen while we feed them) and are always running away if we approach, we have grown so accustomed to them that even the thought of something happening to them makes me anxious...

Puppy training class last night!
That was great. The lady was very good and really knew her onions (dogs). We're now using a clicker (as per your recommendations cubby) and really looking forward to next week. We've got two commands to try and the way she explained everything was so good. Really started to click (pun intended) in place.

Lovely stuff wunty! In unexpected sad news we just learnt a dog from the puppy class we did passed away. A lovely Bernese Mountain dog who was a real gangly thing back then. Dudley loved him

So we are looking after my mum's dog again (she's in hospital after a fall). The cats are distinctly unimpressed. We've so far been keeping them apart, with the cats shut in the kitchen at night (as normal) with the door shut and window panes blocked out so the dog can't see them. The dog is downstairs too. Then in the day, stair gate closed, cats put upstairs with food as a safe space. Previously, we've only had to do this for one or two days tops but I think it might be for longer. Any ideas on how to socialise them?

Two baby teeth gone! She was chewing something like crazy and I was going out of my mind trying to get whatever it was out her mouth before I finally noticed it was a back tooth. Finally got it then an hour later caught her at it again and it was the same tooth from the other side. Growing up too fast 😟

Not really! The cats refuse to come in by themselves as the dog barks or chases them! They do come in at night to eat but don't seem to stay around (as the dog hears them). Very occasionally there's been a standoff. They'll have to get used to him at some point.

Dougs I think all you can do is try to introduce them gradually and hope they all get used to it, or endeavour to keep them apart. It works for us because our cats were adults when Maj arrived and they were happy to take themselves off and stay away if they didn't want to be around him. We used to sit in the lounge and leave the door/gate open and they started coming in for a look. Eventually they'd come in and sit down. Now, they're totally used to him.

One of them did come in through the catflap and head upstairs by himself, so that's progress I guess. The frustrating thing is that we tried to get my mum to bring him over when he was a pup and the cats were kittens but she refused time and again. They'll get there, it'll just take time I think.
Mum is getting there, they are putting in place more care (4 times a day) for when she is discharged which will be in the next week I guess. She's starting to lose a few more marbles too which is hard to see (especially when she forgets about my dad dying 11 years ago and gets upset all over again!).

Scouting. The way was clear. And Dougs, time is really the only thing. Patience, consistency, you'll get there. And hopefully they'll end up like this... And all the best to your mam, too.

Nipped upstairs for five minutes yesterday, came back down and the dog had taken three partridge decorations off the tree and ripped them to shreds. Little bastard, those were my favourite!

rhaegyr Oh shit! We put our tree up last night and fingers crossed she seems okay with it. She did try to chew everything but after a few "leave's" she seemed to be quite content not to bother. Early days of course and I fully expect her to have half the tree in her mouth by the end of the week.

He was okay with it last year (was only 6 months old) - he's a full on teenager this time round and I think his prey drive kicked in (as well as pushing boundaries generally). I was more worried about him pissing on it tbh.
Keep an eye on her next year for sure!

Funnily enough after my confidence yesterday, she didn't half go at it last night...

Little Penny had her first experience of snow this morning. Initially she wouldn't go out because "what the fuck is that?" However once she went out and realised it made everything 400% more lickable she was having the time of her life.

Ha, I remember the cats' first experience of snow. As you'd expect, they were not fans.

Our mog wanted out this morning for her usual rake around the neighbourhood to see what's happening. Given that it was -6 or so, I wasn't willing to leave it out all day today.
I was not in the good books.

Yeah, what with the dog, we are grabbing the cats as soon as we can in the morning and chucking them upstairs. They have been in a bit at night but are never in when I get up at 6ish, which is unlike them. It's not even that cold here but still doesn't feel right leaving them out.

Even worse, I forgot to switch the heating off before leaving work in the rush to get the boy out the door in time, get the car defrosted to go to work and try to keep the cat in. I had (stupidly) nudged it back on after the timed bit ran out since the house was still freezing at 7:50am, so thought I'd give it another 20-30mins before switching it off when i left.
We are basically paying to heat the house for a cat today. /o\
