Yeah sod the box office takings and whether it lost money. BR2049 was the most important sci-fi movie to be released in 20 years.
Much like the original will be regarded as a classic film that flopped. It cost the studio 80 million but we were provided with something wonderful.

I quite liked that.
I thought the casting was excellent, it was visually stunning and it captured the heart of the book.
My other half was less enamoured and I was coming to say I could see a sequel not being made - good to see I’m already wrong.
Anyway, the film didn’t end when I thought it would. Be interesting to see how much of the original trilogy of books it takes on, but will certainly be off to see it when it arrives.

Unfortunately the ability of a film with a massive budget to merely break even, let alone turn a profit, does have quite a large impact on studios being willing to fund further films like that. Part of the reason Blade Runner was stuck in limbo for so long rights wise was because Jerry Perenchio (producer of the original) absolutely hated it and was still so pissed off until the day he died that it didn't make any money. It did poorly in the US but pulled in almost twice its (estimated) budget worldwide. Not a hit for sure, but depending on marketing costs there's a fair chance it at least made its money back. The only thing I've seen after the theatrical run is Denis saying "Europe saved my ass", which could mean saved from losing so much that he'd become a pariah who wouldn't get to work in Hollywood again, or saved as in it actually got into positive figures in the end. |

Hollywood is notoriously opaque when it comes to box office clarity for shady accounting reasons (for years WB claimed Batman 89 never actually made a profit) but most reasonable estimates have BR2049 losing around $100 million.
Depending on what the nut was (what percentage of box office takings the exhibitors keep) and how much they spent on marketing, and if the leads had back-end deals (I can't imagine Harrison Ford didn't), there's no way it made any money. It's just a question of how much it lost.
I would say that Denis Villeneuve has a fan high up at WB, who is probably also a Dune fan.

What I don't understand about takings of a film etc is surely by now the original Blade Runner will have made untold millions from DVD sales and what not in the years following. Where is this accounted for in these things? It is still and will continue to make money for someone and surely 2049 will have given the original film another boost. I'm sure I saw a lot of cinemas put the final cut of BR on their screens in the run up to 2049's release.

The general rule of thumb is whatever the production costs, double it and that will be the total cost with marketing, so $300 million+ in 2049s case. They probably spent more than the production costs on marketing though as it was plastered everywhere so it's probably closer to $350 to $400 million total, which would be a $100 million loss compared to the box office. They've no doubt turned a profit by now though with physical and streaming rights sales, but Hollywood doesn't like playing the long game.

Yeah, seems very unlikely it made its budget back in the theatre run. What I don't understand about takings of a film etc is surely by now the original Blade Runner will have made untold millions from DVD sales and what not in the years following. With a lot of movie projects there are a bunch of different entities pitching in money and it's treated as a high risk investment where they hope for a big return in a few years. What might trickle in over the next 40 years is generally not much of a factor at the funding stage, even though we'd probably get better art out of it if it was. |

You have to remember Blade Runner was a huge flop when it came out, even if it wasn't massively expensive to make, and got critically mauled too. There was no-one really defending it. VHS rentals were established enough to try to get some revenue from, but it wasn't exactly a big deal then either. It took until the early 90s for people to start reappraising it.

With reply to how much exhibitors keep, for some films it can be 0, NADA, big nothing for the first week or two of a big film. That's why they refuse gift cards for some films and push concessions so much (or at least they did before Covid).
That leaves, for the biggest movies, maybe a week after to get some money out of it, when the theatrical drop off has already plummeted 80% or whatever.
Cinema openings are so different now. Even in the 90s films could run for weeks and weeks. Now, it's boffo opening weekend or you're fucked. Oh, and China now, obvs.

God, what a film. The first film since COVID where I’m planning on watching it again due to the sheer spectacle of it all. Those gravity bombs, good lord. I do have a few questions though: I don’t really understand the political motivation of the emperor here. I get that he wants to destroy House Atreides because they are too powerful but cannot overtly do it in case of rebellion; however surely this plan makes him look bad no matter what the outcome? Surely an outsider would see the following:
1 - Emperor orders Harkonnen to leave Arrakis, which they do.
2 - Emperor orders Atreides to go to Arrakis and take over spice production, which they do.
3 - Harkonnen decided that actually they still want to do the spice stuff, so they attack and kill off Atreides, in direct contravention of the Emperors orders and that’s ok..?
Just felt like a weird plan. |

It went all over the seat (Luxe seats so he wasn't "that" close to me). But he left with his dad and the last 15 mins I had to watched sitting next to a sizeable puddle of puke on the seat. Was awesome. |

Saw it today, loved the build-up but once the action started I was a bit disappointed with the direction it took. I've never read the book or seen the 84 film though so I went in with zero foreknowledge.
The background and poltics needed fleshing out a bit more, I was also confused by the grand plan. And jeez it was loud, some of the effects really had my ears ringing. I still struggled to make out some of the dialog though.

On a second viewing I do appreciate what Villeneuve has done in terms of streamlining the plot to be appealing to a mainstream audience, but it still irks me how much has been lost in the mix.
I still had to explain bits to my missus who was a bit mystified by all the sci-fi jibberybollocks.
On the drive home I fully datadumped all the Dune lore on her to flesh it out. I could palpably feel her being magnetised by my mythic storytelling abilities and she definitely got moist.

As I'm having to wait another month to see this I'm just going to discuss the Lynch film.
First viewing in years, of the Spicediver Redux edit on Youtube. I don't remember the second half of the film being so compressed, everything from escaping Arrakis onwards is kinda rushed and, frankly, shitty. Parts still look amazing, though. I thought Jose Ferrer did well at portraying a harangued emperor, almost like a stressed single mother.
