How is it prone to abuse? It’s there for the safety of the passenger and the driver. I’d wager it benefits both far far more than it is ever abused.

I suppose if it was open to abuse we would have heard about it by now since black cans have been doing it literally forever.
On a side note, the amount of people who didn’t know this does point to a bit of an ‘RIP Black Cabs’ watershed

Yeah maybe it's nothing, but I was thinking of a dodgy taxi driver refusing to unlock a female passenger while he "flirts" with her / harrasses her. Or I dunno, it crashes with the lock engaged and the driver unconscious. Just seemed like a hazard with more downsides than upsides.
Although admittedly, the very big upside in this case was apparently "lock a suicide bomber in the cab to save a hospital"

Yeah, black cabs have always locked the doors. Don't know if it's changed in the 30 years since I last got a cab, but back then the doors stayed locked by default until you'd coughed up the fare then you got let out.

These bullshit details always happen and get reported on heavily with these chaotic stories. The BBC ran heavily with the whole "mystery injector" at the Astroworld crush, as if that could somehow explain how hundreds of people were injured and 9 killed, and then only a few days later retracted it.
Here they're quick to frame the taxi driver as a brave soldier who stood up in the face of terrorism, when he was probably trying to get the fare out of the guy.
