That sucks. Kinda hard to believe. Still not clear what the shooter's issue was. Japan is a pretty safe country overall, but it has more than its fair share of random weirdo nutjobs.

Well that's sad. I'm sure an American republican will soon be motivated to tweet something about gun control using this a reference.

That would be foolish, given the number of gun deaths in Japan.
Also, given the high number of crazy incel otaku here, if they had easy access to guns the results wouldn't be pretty.

Really, sad, apparently the nutter said he was targeting a religious leader who wasn't even there.

It is a bit weird, as the gun looks to have been home made, which would imply planning. But Abe was only confirmed to go there the night before. Maybe he just wanted to shoot anyone.

I think the situation is a bit different as MPs routinely go about constituency clinics etc. with zero police or security.

It's a very common part of Japanese elections to see politicians giving stump speeches infront of crowds outside train stations etc.. (It's noisy and annoying as hell, tbh).
Not sure if they do constituency clinics, and they don't do doorstepping, but they do do those kind of speeches a lot. I guess that isn't particularly secure. Abe being an ex-prime minister did have security guards, but I guess it's a hard situation to keep an eye on everyone.

Could be others I am forgetting though.

Also there's kind of less need for tight security, because guns aren't really a thing in Japan. Most of the "nutter runs amok" incidents have been with knives.

There is an actual wiki page for murdered US politicians. Gifford doesn't actually turn up on that as she didn't die. Wasn't there a shooting at a baseball game of politicians recently?
I expect they have a bit more security in first place.
Also, this doesn't include wider set of public officials, including mayors, police chiefs, etc who definitely get murdered more than in UK.

Didn't realise the weapon used was improvised, the first shot looked like a crap firework going off. Quite a somber Abroad in Japan video about it, probably not the first video Chris thought he'd be making after being back in the UK for six weeks. youtu.be/azw5sR2pDcY

He was an ultranationalist right winger who consistently denied things like Japanese atrocities in WW2 etc.

Don't get the Abe hate. What did he do? Extreme right winger. Some stuff dubious (bring Japan away from pacifism) and some terrible (absolutely in denial about ww2 atrocities etc.)

The older generation is nationalist and right-wing. Younger Japanese, not so much.
Problem is, people in Japan live forever and ever, so the ultra-nationalists still have a lot of political punch.

The older generation is politically right wing and conservative, but a lot of them are pretty anti-nationalist and pacifist.
The younger generation is more socially liberal, but due to things like social media they're often more nationalist and anti-pacifist than the older ones.
Though of course that's a massive generalization.
Personally, I never really liked Abe's policies, but I don't think I'd class him as an ultra-nationalist. He was on the right of his center-right party, but he wasn't really an extremist, other than his historical revisionism thing.

Yeah it's a bit of a generalisation, but not a massive one imo. Japan is a conservative country, it's a rapidly ageing country, and most of the people with the reins on power there are old (though the average age of Diet members is only the mid 50s, which is younger than I thought it would be).
On a slight tangent, I recommend that anyone who visits Tokyo go to the museum attached to the Yasukuni Shrine. It is *wild*, like an alternative history novel only not meant to be fiction.
