Guess the record of every host winning the opening game is about to be ended. Correction : guess the record of every host not losing the opening game is about to be ended.

Obviously they may get something out of match if the half-time refreshments for the officials comes with huge brown envelopes.

Nice to see confirmation that Ecuador's keeper isn't sitting reading a paper and having a cuppa.

Have to say I had zero hype coming into this World Cup and that’s done nothing to elevate it at all.

Qatar are awful, how on Earth did they have only one loss in the run up to the tournament? Well other than potentially shady reasons.

How low will the Qatar goal difference be at the end of the group stage I wonder? Ecuador saving themselves in the second half.

That was a poor game, first half had its moments but otherwise, also Qatar are very poor.

It's my "bah humbug" opinion that football is generally a boring sport even at the best of times. I'd take a volley or basket or even freaking baseball match over it any day of the week.

You're watching the wrong games. I agree on volley - (assuming you meant volleyball). Basketball and baseball though - nope. Edit: that is to say, I can understand how someone might think of volleyball as more exciting than football...

Football's low scores and prancing players do make it a bit dreadful. Something like ice hockey is way more exciting.

I mean, I think we’re probably all set for things to talk about in this thread, what with discussing the moral dubiety of this particular WC alongside the actual football itself, without really any need for people who actively dislike football telling everyone how shit football is?
I guess we can if you really want to though. I think lawn bowls is shite, for instance.

Football's low scores and prancing players do make it a bit dreadful. Something like ice hockey is way more exciting. Or, as is Gary Lineker’s argument, does the scarcity of goals not hugely increase their value and therefore the dramatic stakes of the game? If one goal can swing it and there might only be a handful of great chances in a game then its more likely that a weak team could beat a strong one than sports with higher or more frequent scoring. Its why you so rarely see upsets in the other codes of football (American, Gaelic, Aussie, the Rugbies) or sports like basketball in comparison to Association where the stakes are so much higher with every attack potentially being the winner. An underdog might cling onto a 1-0 win but if there are dozens of scores per match then the strong team can’t be resisted. As a result a soccer six nations would never have a team losing as consistently as Italy (unless the sixth team was San Marino or something).

If I actively disliked a sport and it had its own thread on here I really don’t see myself going into it to participate, because that would be utterly pointless.
