Konami, or some company they contracted, just released a patch on GOG to add support for modern controllers on MGS2(and a few games), and playing it on an OLED at 4K is amazing. Just wish we had Snake Eater.

I hope the rumours of an MGS remake by Bluepoint are true, I would be so all over that.

Just wish we had Snake Eater. Do the analogue controls work correctly? I mean, does it offer the full range of 360 degree movement or is it locked to 8 way movement?

I genuinely don't know as I haven't tried emulation for years, but I would guess that the PC release has higher res assets of things that can't be upscaled, like textures of the boxes, so maybe better just on that one difference. But again I don't know, so if anyone does I'd be happy to be informed.

Microsoft really need to up the resolution and frame rate of the MGS collection on Series X. I'd love to revisit 2&3 at something above 720p.

^ The Zone of the Enders Collection as well. I was bummed when the PS4 Pro got the 4K port of ZoE2, but the One X didn't. A BC X patch would give them the one up in also including the original game where the PS4 port was just for the second game.

Slightly apropos of nothing but my daily internet surfing lead me onot Metal Gear Solid 2. And this quote is in the game, towards the end: Considering this was released in 2001 it seems scarily prescient. Like i know there are going to be other sources it drew upon so it wont be the only media to have this view, but this was in a game. A game where the main story was about AI controlling information to manipulate people.
It just seems mad that a twenty year old game actually seems more relevant now than it did back then.

KOJIMA PREDICTED EVERYTHING!
But yes, I also find it pretty crazy how prescient this was.

Someone's edited some of those lines and added a few in. The one about late stage capitalism and the one about online echo chambers are not in the game.

I played Metal Gear Solid 2 once; when it came out I rented it from Blockbuster and played the whole thing in one sitting which ended the next morning. My dad and mum watched me finish it while eating some breakfast.
I remember hitting the crazy fourth-wall-breaking sections while my teenage brain was hitting that bleary feeling when you haven't had any sleep and wondering whether I was going nuts or the game was. In retrospect, I think it was probably the optimal state to play this game.
I should probably have another go at some point, but I'm worried it'll kill me and I dont want to go out like that.

I thought we had a more general Metal Gear thread, but guess this one will have to do.
A brief mention of MGS over in the Tomb Raider Remaster thread reminded me that I had been intending to actually play these games for some time now. I guess not being a console boy meant these games kind of passed me by when they originally came out, so I've only played Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain (and not all of it). Oh, and I played Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance as well, if that counts.
What's the best way to play these games now and which versions should I be going for? Is it worth starting with the classic Metal Gear games or just going straight for Metal Gear Solid? I recall the recent remasters were considered a bit poo, so should I just go with emulation?

I think the new remasters are fine unless you're playing on Switch. The complaint is simply that they're unapologetically basic re-releases, i.e. no texture packs, higher resolution etc.
I watched an interesting opinion piece about this actually - though I forget who made it - that pointed out the hypocrisy of the gaming community who bemoan the lack of game preservation but then bitch when they get simple ports of old games rather than a remake or remaster. Ports like this are arguably game preservation in its purest form and they got a kick in the teeth for it.
Anyway yeah you absolutely do not have to play the original 2D Metal Gears unless you're really up for a retro kick. They're not necessary at all to understand what's going on - and I expect that the vast majority of MGS fans have never played them at all.

I can't speak for the remasters but was surprised they got such a kicking. I'd personally skip the original Metal Gear games but I'm not a completist. Metal Gear Solid references these but it doesn't really matter.
Then I think it's a case of going chronologically (in terms of when the game was made):
- MGS (I've never played the Twin Snakes version, always wanted to) - MGS2 (strap yourself in, it may be the stupidest game ever made), - MGS3 (the version with the better camera, Subsistence? Or better still, wait for the remake? It's absolutely brilliant either way, and my favourite apart from The Phantom Pain), - MGS4 (second stupidest game in the series, fucking fried eggs, though there is some delightful MGS fan service in there).
Oh, and don't miss out on Peace Walker.

Remasters we're good imo and came with some all new digital lore stuff that was very well put together and the absolute opposite of being half arsed. I think 50% of it was people waiting to give Konami a kicking for existing.

Nice, I see Fanatical has the steam version of Collection for £30ish, so seems the easiest way to play them. Thought I was going to have to end up emulating and go for different versions on different platforms.
I don't mind too much about minimal effort remasters. Just having games working on modern systems is the important part. If anything, I prefer that to something that completely re-invents the look and feel of the games. I'll probably play them on Steam Deck anyway, so don't need super hi-res textures (and seems they are mostly verified).

My biggest gripe for the Bluepoint/Master Collection is not being able to holster properly. I still mess it up despite them having a workaround for it.. Seems weird they couldn't have done something to fix it.
