I think they assign colours to certain wavelengths and use that as a guide. Obviously some artistic licence but there is some degree of "sense" to it.

Always wonder who makes those artist’s impressions. Right, the image of this thing is only 60 pixels, can you draw a giant gas cloud getting sucked into a supermassive black hole? This was literally (part of) my late wife's father's job. He was an "astronomical artist", and did most of the artwork for stuff like The Sky At Night (BBC programme), Astronomy Now (magazine) and the like. If you ever remember seeing it, for instance, he did the BBC Radio Times cover for the week when the Giotto probe (still can't read/write that without hearing it in Patrick Moore's voice!) interacted with the tail of Halley's Comet. Oh wow, sounds like an awesome job. Did he ever talk about his work? I guess I always wondered if they get feedback from the scientists on how it should look? Probably doesn’t help that a lot of this stuff is outside our visual spectrum, so in reality you wouldn’t see much.

Probably doesn’t help that a lot of this stuff is outside our visual spectrum, so in reality you wouldn’t see much. It really was interesting. He travelled all over the world, documenting solar eclipses and the like, and the way in which he represented things that we cannot technically “see” was always very calculated and audience-dependent. As in, is this a fantasy/entertainment piece, or something more scientific? Working with Patrick could be very frustrating at times, for a variety of reasons, but we had a great time going to all the BBC parties and so on!

I remember Patrick Moore, we had bbc 1 and 2 on cable when I lived in Brussels in the 80s and 90s. Very frustrating because he was at times incomprehensible for us.

Ceased to exist? So it’s an ex-lunar lander?

Clearly it didn't use its limited fuel supply properly, the original simulated landing.

India's Luna mission has successfully made the first landing at the southern pole so the relative noobs have outdone the Russians this week.

That’s beautiful. Always find it a bit weird when stars blow up that you see two jets or lobes, you’d think I’d be more or less spherical.
