I'm banning pigs from flying, someone somewhere at some point in time said something about pigs flying, but I'm here to make the tough long term decisions and pigs won't fly!
Money appears to be on a May election, or increasingly it is. So hooray that's 4-5 less months of these arseholes to deal with. This speech may have been election campaign pt1.

So the tories, failing to implement any actual real policies are now just going to make shit up and pretend they've been successfull in stopping something that never existed!

Starmer really needs to come out and say something along the lines of "Don't worry, as soon as we're in all these targets will be back in place" so that businesses can carry on as if today hasn't happened. Apparently Labour have done just this in relation to ICE cars and said EV only from 2030 when they get in. Now they need to get through to the brain-dead morons who think this means that all ICE cars will off the road in 7 years. It's the same as ULEZ. All the tantrums are coming from people who don't understand.

Not a single one of these things he's claiming to have scrapped are actually real policies or planned policies. This really is disgusting. As someone has already said, the "policy" announcement today has basically been an announcement on the absence of policy and this tweet just hammers that home, with a list of fictional policies they won't be doing (also, slightly ironic them complaining about a meat tax, when they are the party that has actually had some success with dissuading people from certain foods through taxation - the sugar tax). Despite what I was saying earlier about no election for a long time, this did kind of sound like they were gearing up to begin electioneering. He also said they were going to be setting out more in the coming weeks. Perhaps it is just a response to Labour going heavy on what a Labour government will look like recently and the general media tone of Starmer now being shown as the PM in waiting, but it did feel like him laying out what will be featuring in the manifesto.

They let Sadiq roll out an expanded ULEZ which whilst ultimately a good thing is very devisive. Even for those outside London fearing it might be adopted in other UK cities.
Now the Tories hav set out their stall and are collecting all the climate change deniers, Top Gear enthusiasts and various aggrieved/oddball voters.

"Compulsory car sharing"
What was that idea - telling Freddie Flintoff to drive Russell Brand to work?

The idea that any of those measures, if they ever actually existed, are 'heavy-handed' is laughable. I suspect mother nature will show us what 'heavy-handed' really means in coming decades.

Look at all those hardships. Eating less meat and sorting your own rubbish.
Plenty will be car sharing de facto soon if people have to dump their car because it's too fucking expensive to run.

I wondered if I was going mad when I watched it. ‘When the fuck did they announce all that?’. Turns out they didn’t and it’s all just a weird, pointless lie.

Very disappointed to not see a tax on private swimming pools (wtf use are they in this country unless very energy intensive heating required?)
Should also be double taxed if screaming kids come with the pool imo!

I’ve seen comments on forums along the lines of “the French would be burning stuff down by now” when in fact, France has a far more comprehensive crit’air system that just completely bans certain polluting vehicles from entering cities

Short term gain, long term pain seems to be the government thinking of the time.
My own thinking, is that for quite a few of these green measures, the return on investment for private companies isn't worth it.
If you have a particular ideology, which unfortunately this government has, of minimal state intervention and incentivising private sector investment, the idea of investing in wind and solar isn't that enticing. You can build the infrastructure, but what do you sell after?
So, I think that the state should be the investor of choice in these matters. If we look at it from a business perspective this still works.
Corbyn's big thing was to nationalise the trains. So you basically say to train users, 'you're currently spending 12% of your income on train fares, we'll take that down to 5%' Those workers have had an effective pay rise of 7%. That's good for the economy right? Good for the private sector.
Insulating homes. How does a large corporate make profit from it? Except we can make the same argument as above, save large amount of income for ordinary workers on their bills, give them an effective pay rise, boosting spending in the economy, which is good for private companies.
Wind and solar. Electricity from these sources isn't a commodity as such, produces energy at much lower prices. Once installed, you only really have maintenance costs involved. However, this could also mean much lower running costs for businesses as they're energy bills are slashed as well as to the consumer who also have their energy bill slashed, giving them another effective pay rise, meaning they have more money to spend.
This stuff shouldn't even be hard to do. All you have to say is, 'through our policy you're getting a 30% pay rise and we're stopping paying ridiculous subsidies and doing tax breaks for companies that are shite.'

Every single comment on BBC's article on the issue seems to be agreeing with him, so they seem to have judged it pretty well in terms of short term PR.
(Not that I would *ever* take what commenters on the BBC think as logical or reasonable)

From the discussion in the UK media you'd think that London was the only city in the world with a ULEZ, it's not even the only city in England let alone in Europe. Jesus you want to take a look at eg Germany? If you don't go and get your green sticker from the TüV you're basically banned from driving anywhere except the middle of the forest.

Bristol's basically cuts the city in half, so us paupers in the south with old bangers have the choice of either schlepping way out west to come across the Suspension Bridge (at £1 a time) and doubling the journey time (and so doubling the emissions!), or paying £9 each time for the privilege of wanting to come anywhere near the centre or to leave the city to the north.
And yet paying this daily is still cheaper than buying a new car for any period less than about 5 or 6 years, so...

We’ve also got to worry about the poor tradesman who has to drive his diesel van into London to work, he already struggling to make ends meet, even though he can simply add £12.50 to his daily rate like he already does for parking and congestion charge

In a different timeline, the Biden supporter takes the helm, the Murdoch empire starts backing actually sensible people and the world finally takes a turn for the positive. Journey to face the unknown, and ponder the question: what if?
