Don't mention the Brexit! Inch ne, on the Brexit-e! This is shit, but it's going to be the shape of things in the UK and even Europe for the next 10/20 years. As the labour pool dwindles but opposition to immigration grows, with fully automated cars/lorries just too far away on the horizon. I can see bigger Lorries/tankers already on the motorways! But I can't help but think so much energy and labour is spent making and delivering shit food and plastic garbage. How much of a supermarket is junk food; at least 50%? If we concentrated delivering quality food, we might have less stock problems and less obese people. /None of my rant makes sense

And yet UBI will be resisted, villified, hated and totally out of reach until it's far too late. Because we're "lazy"

As much as Brexit is responsible for the situation as it is now, they could however make truck driving a less shit job so more people would be willing to do it. The hours and work conditions are fucking awful so it's no wonder people don't want to do it. I think they have said the average age of truck drivers here is 55 because no-one wants to do it.
I know of a large company that is closing its UK operation and they currently have thousands of pallets of stock that need moving in the next few months and it's just not going to happen. They have been saying about their issues getting truck drivers for months now.

I kind of like the idea of being a long haul truck driver. I am less enamoured with driving around central London trying not to kill cyclists and electric scooters.
There's video's of people fighting in station forecourts. I wonder what will happen if there is a genuine catastrophe or natural disaster. I think the descent to cannibalism would be fairly rapid.

Friend of mine was made redundant at first lock down as an hgv driver, worked for peanuts for nhs right after. He’s now on double wage back as hgv but doing nhs stuff on side to help out

There's a load of quotes similar to "every society is three meals away from chaos" or "civilization is twenty-four hours and two meals away from barbarism."
Based on current evidence it feels sadly correct.

Brexit killing cabotage pretty much fucked everything. Whereas before you could do multiple deliveries in one round trip an EU truck now can't, explained here in detail but these are the important bits :
* Only 2 cabotages operations may be undertaken by EU hauliers in the UK territory, after loaded trip. * Combined transport operations rule no longer apply; EU company can no longer undertake combined transport operations in the UK.
You used to be able to make lots of interconnected cargo trips moving from place to place, country to country, now more individual trucks have to do more trips.

I’m heading up north tomorrow for a few days to see my mum, I wonder if I’ll be able to get some petrol to come back again.

It'll be like The Walking Dead or Mad Max soon, you'll be tapping the tanks of an abandoned car just to get the last dregs out the car didn't use before stopping.

From what I’ve seen from truck drivers, wages are just one of the issues. Having to pay for parking, having nowhere to park except service stations and depots, having to pay a lot for the privilege, lack of facilities. The EU have just agreed to spend tens of millions on improving facilities across Europe for the drivers, and they’re already far better than they are here.
Also, even if they did allow the visas for the drivers, they haven’t said anything about how long they’d last or cost. It’ll take ages to get the number we need and they’re trying to get them from a market that is already short on drivers.
There’s no good or easy solution at this stage, we pushed them out with Brexit, they won’t come back so easily and there aren’t that many people in the U.K. that could do it no matter how much they’re paid. We’re short of 100k drivers and they’re taking about getting a few thousand via visas.

My sister, bless her, got on her soapboax the other day about how if they paid the drivers more it would be little old her who has to pay more ultimately.
Tbh I zoned out as it somehow turned into an anti-benefit rant, as she somehow thinks that people *can't* be in poverty in the UK. Not sure when she became such a knob, politically. Years ago I suspect.

Surely we should have self driving lorries by now. We're supposed to be living in the future. But no we're still talking about how expensive the dinosaur farts we rely on to stay warm is about to get.

There was great article on the BBC about a month ago, where a few lorry driver said he wouldn't go back to the job even if they paid him 80k as it was horrible job with the lack of services and facilities for the times they are away from home 3 or more days. Scummy fat cats at companies always play the fear card of raising prices to pay staff more, this is happening in the USA in fast food jobs. People have been quitting due to the fact the utter shit wage they have been paid. Some states started paying the staff more and prices didn't go up. I use to know someone who was complete shitbag, typical daily mail reader but he would say "I'm not racist as all my staff are eastern European!!!1111". Only because he would pay them minimum wage and had constant stream of cheap labour if the current ones got fed up of his behaviour. (Sure he was pro-brexit as well) worth a read www.theguardian.com/business/2021/sep/25/european-lorry-drivers-will-not-want-to-come-to-uk-warn-haulage-chiefsdon't blame them to be honest

Funnily enough they enjoy their retirement thanks to renting out property to benefit scroungers.

Just to change the subject for a second that new Labour policy of removing charitable status from private schools is exactly the kind of thing they need to be coming up with.
