That Tory attack ad pretending Labour-contolled London is a crime-ridden dystopia is really something. Tories lowering the bar on a daily basis.

[re previous page discussion on 2% inflation and Japan]
After 15 years of the Bank of Japan having a 2% inflation target, taking hundreds of measures, and getting nowhere near it, it turns out all they really needed was the war in Ukraine and Covid to push up global prices and they got there with ease. But after 15 years of prices remaining level, suddenly everything is starting to get much more expensive, which is stressing a lot of regular folk out. So the government needs to bring in measures to support low income families. On the one hand it's finally forcing companies to increase wages, but on the other hand they never really needed to increase wages before. Plus that's going to be mainly the big companies, so it's going to increase the wealth gap with low paid employees at small companies (at least until it trickles down) and on temporary contracts. I also don't totally get the benefit. Though I think Japan is a rather unusual case, due to the amount of elderly people who invest in Japanese bonds, meaning that they've been able to get the country hugely into debt in a way that most other countries couldn't.

They've screwed with the economy and absolutely fucked the environment but I suppose that is the gain from leaving those bloody liberal EU folk and their environmental bollocks.

Surely if inflation was zero then people could be less likely to save more as theyโd have more confidence that the price of things wonโt go up. If I knew things would cost the same now as in 20 years time it would be so much easier to plan.

Itโs kind of wild that something that would have previously caused heads to roll, namely destroying the environment, is barely an afterthought in the long list of things they have ruined

For a country that has been in deflation for 30 years, Japan doesn't seem to be doing bad for itself. I may be wrong, they may crippling debt but they seem to be way more advanced than the UK over those 30 years so it is hard to understand why it would be so bad. So there's a bit of a caveat here: Deflation means that the money you have on hand slowly becomes worth more. That sounds pretty great on paper.
But this mostly benefits the people who already have a lot of money in the bank. If you're struggling to meet ends and only have a minimal amount of money left over at the end of the month, the benefits you'll see are minimal. And given how companies aren't exactly eager to raise wages along with inflation, I very much doubt that they'll lower prices alongside deflation either.
In short: Deflation has its benefits, but they only benefit people who already have capital, allowing them to amass even more capital by simply doing nothing. So from a distance Japan doesn't look that bad, but there's lots of people who look to the US and see wealth without the undercurrent of massive wealth divides too.

I very much doubt that they'll lower prices alongside deflation either. Assuming deflation is calculated busing the same basket of goods that would be used to calculate inflation, then the state of affairs would be that goods and services had already fallen in price.
