I don't know why/how but this post office Mr Bates thing is so immediately affecting and intensely fury invoking. Within 5 minutes I'm incredibly invested and identifying with all the post masters and harbouring a hatred worse than for a sith lord for any rep from the post office. My favourite description of humans is from 'The Science of Discworld.' Describing us as 'homo Narrativum' or the 'The story telling ape.' A good story affects us far more than a rote fact based timeline. Definitely finish it though, it's great.

General election: Labour would need record swing to win due to boundary changes. www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-67361138As the population ages, I imagine it'll probably get harder for Labour to win anyway, especially with the Welsh and Scottish local parties taking some of their votes. It seems like a few years ago we we talking about how hard this would make it for Labour to win, but then the Tories have been so absolutely shit that it's made a Labour victory seem less of a long shot.

The adage of "As you get older, you get more conservative." is overly simplistic. It's far more a case of. As you acquire capital, you become more capitalist. With so many young people effectively being barred from acquiring capital, this certainly won't be as true in future. Ironically, Thatchers socio-economic engineering, to turn people into Tory voters, two generations on, is baring people from becoming Tory voters.
And the comparison of the next election with 97, in the article. Compares a swing from a narrow victory, to a swing from a strong, but largely single issue victory. Chalk, say hello to cheese.

Don't get me wrong though. The boundary changes are a damn fine bit of gerrymandering. But the article comes off as BBC makes comforting noise in Tory.

Also evidence has shown that the "you get more right wing as you get older" is, at best, not holding truth anymore.
Typically, people start to vote more right after 35 but it's not happening. Both here and the US. Other users linked to it before.

Sam Freedman, a very worthwhile follow, is sceptical.

Hopefully he's right.
Voter swings and percentages don't always mean what they seem to mean when we're talking about FPTP and constituencies, even more so when they've changed.

Fujitsu confirming they knew the system was faulty and backed up the post office to convict post masters. They are sorry, isn't that nice of them.

Johnson has just come out in support of Anderson, Braverman etc. on the Rwanda Bill. He might be making a play for the top job again soon...

First he'd have to find a Conservative Association dumb enough to put him up as a candidate, ignoring the party's rules about people who resign as an MP not being able to be short-listed, then it would have to be approved by CCHQ and that's pretty unlikely any time soon.
His time is over, he may not wish it to be so but he shat the bed and he's got to lie in it.

I don't think he will come back to politics. Even he must realise that between the speaking circuit and being paid a fortune to barf out insightful columns such as 'why can't I burn my Christmas tree?' he now has the perfect balance of income to being a thick, lazy cunt.
As farage demonstrates, its much easier to just heckle from the sidelines.

"Burning festive trees produces all sorts of lethal vapours, apparently, including hydrogen cyanide, and apart from anything else they ignite with such magnesium intensity — the pine needles raging like gorse — that you are at serious risk of setting fire to your chimney."
If accurate, this all sounds like reasonable reasons to not allow you to burn a tree.
"But provided you do not live in an area vulnerable to poor air quality, it is not yet illegal to burn your own Christmas tree — or any other logs you choose — in your own home."
Oh, so it isn't illegal then. What was the point of this article?

"When I was a nipper we had no central heating in our Somerset house, or any mains electricity. We would go out foraging for wood in our beaten-up Land Rover, and as soon as we had a load we would bring it back and resume the struggle to keep warm."
You see he's just like us, he understands the common man...
