It is somewhat terrifying, I must admit!
Unfortunately, I don't think there's an alternative halfway house between the electric frothers made by companies like Dualit, Nespresso et al, and the steam wands that come attached to full-fledged espresso machines.
I could be wrong, though - I don't drink milk myself - and I'm sure one of our fellow coffee wankers will know better.

You could get a cheap espresso machine if all you wanted was the steam wand.

Yeah that's an option but just seems a bit wasteful. Seems an untapped market personally, so many cheap espresso machines with them built in for 100 quid but if you take out the crap coffee making part and sell the rest for say 70 quid then that's surely onto a winner

I don't know whether the current flavour profile isn't to my liking, or if my tastes have somehow changed post-COVID, but the latest bag of Red Brick I had really wasn't great - it seemed very roasty and bitter indeed, which was most disappointing. By contrast, the latest bag of Sweetshop I had was excellent. Outside of Square Mile, this was fantastic:
While this was one of the best coffees I've ever had, period:
Highly recommended to all of you, with particular reference to Tomo as I think they'd be right up his street.

Fanta?!?
The second one looks interesting. I usually keep a small bag of unwashed coffee in to have now and again but I cant daily drive it. The fermentation taste is a bit much for me in large doses.

/heart Thanks Ulythium – the weirder the better as far as I'm concerned. Love trying fruity stuff with unusual tasting notes.

12 quid for 150g... Jesus wept. But that recommendation... I covet it.

Sorry about that, Tomo - I didn't realise it was sold out. Hopefully they'll do another batch sometime soon. I probably should've mentioned that the tub in the second picture was very expensive. My local specialty place, from which I bought it, won't carry them on a regular basis for that very reason! If you're in a position to treat yourself, I'd say it's worth the money; however, I appreciate how subjective that is. Bongo Heracles I only have a couple of coffees per day, otherwise I'd probably get overwhelmed with the natural-processed stuff quite quickly as well.

I'm too scared to buy the really expensive beans. Wogan had some recently which sounded incredible but was £30 for 250g. Basically it was coffee that tasted like peaches. I forgot the entire process but it was very complicated hence the price
I always end up sacrificing a few shots of new beans while i dial in the machine to get it how I like it. It would pain me wasting shots of that sort of stuff. As much as I would love it

Yeah it's not quite so bad for V60 because you don't dial in. But espresso can get spenny.

Got to admit, when I saw it was coffee toys for under $50 I wasn’t expecting actual toys, more gadgets.
Still, lol.

My folks sadly gifted me some shit beans from somewhere they were that made good coffee and sold beans. Sadly, they were so over-roasted and oily it was not true.
I still drank them mind, as it still made a decent enough flat white, but I had to clean the hopper and burrs after.
Now on some nicer roasted ones.

I think being disgusted, rather than a bit disgruntled, by oily over-roasted beans means my coffee wanker evolution has moved to the next stage.

I had a similar moment of realisation recently, when I saw a sign outside a branch of Costa - a picture of a coffee bean, accompanied by the words, "Now roasted longer for fuller flavour!" (or something similar) - and literally rolled my eyes as I walked past. 'Bonus' coffee wanker points as I was walking back from a very wanker-ish specialty shop at the time, holding two takeout cups full of single origin coffee. Seriously, though, Costa - are you *burning* your beans now? How much darker could they get?!

A lot of people are used to that burnt bitter flavour and think that’s what it should be like, there’s also those that drink it more for the caffeine and think that makes it stronger (when the opposite is true).

I did the same thing at the same Costa sign, the image next to is of just flat out charred beans But then their main business is milk drinks flavoured with coffee.. they are not really advertising to fellow coffee wankers. Unrelated, local coffee recommendation: These guys are worth a look, they have a little shop by the Brickworks , Peak District, which I always try and call into when I'm over that way. kickbackcoffee.co.uk/collections/coffee

Wasn't the main advantage of Costa over Starbucks that their beans weren't all burnt?

I bought the least roasty bag of beans I could find in the supermarket the other day. Desperate. Opted for a strength 3 Kenyan which had classic notes of fruit, flowers and unicorn breath... got it home, cracked it open and the beans were like deep mahogany colour. Urgh. I'm slightly surprised supermarkets haven't cottoned on to the coffee wanker scene yet. Union is alright, but not all of them stock it. Instead it's just variations on burned flavour.
