What about the Wilfa Svart for about 100 quid? Good entry to electrics grinders if you only really want it for filter coffee, V60 etc. Big part of the added premium of the Uniform and Niche etc is that that cover the full grind range including espresso. For me, it would certainly only be for V60 coffee – homemade espresso is not a route I'm considering at the moment. What are the general views on the Svart? It's certainly a good price. I'm perusing the River reviews at the moment...

Ooh, I'll take a look. Amazon reviews are a little mixed, so the more insight, the better! Thanks

As per the previous page I just replaced a svart (the silver one) with an aroma (the black one) and If youre just doing V60s and aeropress, I dont think you could do much better for the price. I think the black one has a more powerful motor (it grinds a bit faster) and the black looks nicer but they are pretty much the same.
I do have an espresso machine and on the rare occasion I use it, I use my hand grinder and the cordless screwdriver because the svart only really goes fine enough for a pressurised portafilter but if thats not a road youre going down, I would just buy it, tbh.

He likes it! Edit: Hoffman, that is Also, it turns out, Bongo likes it too. Yay \o/ It's definitely now on the "consider" list, as I have sufficient River coinage to get that and the meat thermometer I've had my eye on for a while... Thanks, fellow wan... erm, geeks!

Don’t spend more than £15 on a meat thermometer!

Seems like most people here have espresso machines, but obviously they're a lot more expensive than having a v60 or Aeropress setup.
Just wondering how many here drink the espresso as espresso rather than americano or some milk-based thing?
Personally I have an espresso machine (lower end - Bambino Plus and smart grinder pro) but generally drink it as Americano.
Considering getting a v60 though to see how it compares, I doubt the Bambino will last forever!

Flat white for me. Double espresso with a fairly small amount of microfoamed whole milk. I fucking love them.

When I do think ‘I really should use the espresso machine’, I do quite often dilute it down to an americano or steam up some milk for a flat white.
I suppose it is probably due to it not being very well made by my low end gear and cack hands, so doesn’t taste that amazing on its own.

This is mostly how i roll, with the odd stronger cortado, or long black/americano to mix it up. Still like my V60, but it's a bit more of a faff and not quite as nice. Since we like to rate films I'll do the same for my coffee methods (like a complete wanker) : Espresso machine > V60 > moka pot > cafetiere >>> instant I still drink instant though, for a break from all the pure beans/max caffeine.

It's always flat white for me. Actually drinking one now.
I was silly and didn't buy a big batch of beans from my local roaster before the holidays. Was in Sainsbury’s a few days ago and saw they had a brand called 'union coffee'. Heard it recommended a few times so I bought a bag. Actually really impressed and it's the first coffee I've seen in a supermarket that tells you when the beans were roasted. These were roasted on the 2nd of December and taste significantly better than any off the shelf beans I've had before but still not quite as good as Wogans

At home I’ll either have a double espresso or a clever dripper coffee. Usually it’s two of whichever of them each day when working.
If I go out somewhere it’s either espresso or cappuccino.
The coffee taste at the places I go to isn’t great but the milk makes that more tolerable. At home I can’t be arsed with the milk but I think I like it more as is anyway without the milk.
Americanos just taste like watered down espresso (which I guess it is), but I’d rather have the espresso and a separate drink of water.

I don't drink milk, which puts paid to everything except americano/long black/filter/espresso/ristretto.
I use the AeroPress exclusively at home, although I would like to get an espresso machine when I'm in a financial position that'll allow me to do so; as, when, and if that comes to pass, I imagine I'd switch to a combination of espresso and filter in the house.

Just filter at home, Aeropress/ v60/ Kalita dripper. In Europe I'll just have espressos everywhere as they are dirt cheap, UK will be Americanos or occasional flat white with oat. Work we have the Nespresso disc style pods for free so I just have lungos of all the various sorts.

I switched from using my espresso machine to V60 a year or two ago. Former was mainly for flatty whites, but it was a bigger faff making two espresso based coffees compared to doing a single V60 for two people.
Flat white is my coffee preference in a cafe etc, but I do find filter style coffee has a more interesting range of tastes.

Fwiw, if folks are considering getting into espresso, I would definitely get separate grinder and boiler units. I've got a Sage Barista (in fact on my second) and whilst it was a great entry to the world of coffee, the grinder is limited and the portafilter is slightly smaller than standard. Better off buying separate components and upgrading as you go.

Yeah, I’ve got the Sage Bambino Plus and the 54mm portafilter has been a real hassle when it comes to accessories. I’m considering buying the Niche Zero but that lovely cup for the grounds would be too large for the basket which kind of harms one of the cooler side features.
On the flip side I haven’t seen any 58mm machines with the combination of convenience, small size and function that the Bambino brings. It feels like cheating to be able to make a very competent latte from scratch in less time than a V60 would take to brew. I got a nice tamper and a bottomless portafilter for Christmas and just making a cup is still fun and satisfying even aside from the delicious end product.

Just noticed Wilfa have got 20% off via code if you go direct (BXDAY20 until 3rd Jan), £79 + shipping for the Svart and £244 for the uniform, hmm. wilfa.co.uk/collections/coffee/coffee-grinders

I ended up buying a 3D printed piece off Etsy which attached to the portafilter and allowed you to slot in the metal cup from the Niche. Then tip and the grounds go into the basket. It works well, but definitely an added faff of having smaller basket.

Yeah agreed we have the Barista Pro and I want to replace it with the dual boiler and niche zero Barista Pro here too. A dual boiler would be nice- had a bunch of folk round today, and man it's a hassle grind, pour, froth repeat. However, given that most of the time it's just me, I can't really justify upgrading to a more cafe type machine!

OMG, what happened to your hand? It's worse than 'stoof's flipper! Oooh. Tempted by the book though. I assume there is a hand signal that accompanies the 'Ahoy wankers!' statement. I'll try that next time I visit my local coffee place for beans.

I'm not a huge coffee guy but I finally got sick enough of the vending machine coffee at work to buy a coffee brewer thing, think it's called a Cafflano Klassic? I quite liked the fact it has a grinder built in so chose it over an aeropress. Simple enough for an idiot like me to use and obviously way better than the swill that comes out of a machine that also spots out soup and piss weak tea.
