The Filter Blend by Square Mile is another very nice coffee from Hoffmann and company, although I don't think I like it quite as much as Red Brick and Sweetshop.

The worst thing about having to go in the office occasionally is the coffee. There’s a proper cafe with the machines and shit but the beans they use are awful. They even had a vote to choose and people went for the one that tastes most like instant.
Anyway, got my square mile Christmas espresso gift box ordered plus a bag of red brick.

The coffee in Vernon’s Chippy, Crewe, was just fine yesterday, for instance. But today, at a dance competition, hosted at a Nottingham school, fuck me: what the actual fuck was that shit? Coffee-flavoured Beverine? Yes, I'll take it grey, with Creamium…

Huzzah! Got delivery of a square mile package with two packs of beans yesterday. Part of xmas from my sister. Another couple of months to follow apparently too. Excellent. Got a bag of red brick and another blend. Reckon it'll be straight in to the red brick first, then see what the other one's like. Now plan to up my intake over the next few days to run my current batch down in time for xmas! I'll be typing like I've got the D.T's by friday with all the excess caffeine. Apologies for more typos and making even less sense than usual by then.

Yes, having picked up a bag of that last time I was down in london, it's definitely up there with the best I have had from our main 'local' coffee roasters. Their seasonal blend for winter is a total winner for flat white/cortados & it's always a sad day when it stops in feb/march.
However, I may well sub to square mile for red brick for a pack a month to pad out the other stuff I pick up as it is *very* drinkable.

I love Red Brick. Out of all the Square Mile products I've tried - that, Sweetshop, The Filter Blend, and Inza - it's the one to which I keep returning. I'm reliably informed that I have bags of Chalchissa and Zebugu-Busi waiting for me when the 25th rolls around, which is exciting! (The fact that a local espresso bar sells SM stuff on a two-bags-for-£19 basis still boggles my mind, especially as they'll order in anything they don't routinely carry.)

I... just don't like Square Mile's stuff...
There I said it /o\
I tried another couple of bags recently and, sure, it's decent, but I find it has a distinct roast-y flavour across all the products.
I find a lot of other roasters more interesting, various ones discussed in here. Crankhouse (thanks Ulythium) is most recent one I tried and one of their honey ones is very interesting. Think Plot is still my favourite, but it's on the spenny side :/

Glad you've enjoyed the Crankhouse stuff, Tomo - I have to say, they're my favourite roastery of the ones I've checked out thus far, as everything I've tried from them has been excellent. I also got this for Xmas, which I'm looking forward to trying after my current Square Mile bag has been depleted.
Lastly, and speaking of Square Mile, I've genuinely enjoyed everything I've tried of theirs; however, I don't plan to delve any further into their product range in the future. The only 'must-have' beans of theirs are Red Brick and Sweetshop, to my mind.

To be fair, the first bag of Sweetshop I ever bought was absolutely incredible. The stars and my espresso game must've aligned at that time because it really did convey the taste of sweeties.

I think I've spent too much time here, as I totally read that as "Jeff Bridges just put his knob in his coffee"...
... and I took it at face value.

Yep, beans!
My kit is still: V60, papers, normal kitchen scales, gooseneck kettle, Hario Mini hand-grinder.
Had another look at Hoffman’s overview of electric grinders, but the cheapest one that’s grabbed my attention is around £300, apparently, so I’m holding off.
I love the arm workout I get from the Hario, but it does take time to do 15 g…

The Ode ? Have got a few hundred in Amazon credit I'm looking at spending on that, waiting for the V2 to appear (bigger hopper and an ionising thingy to stop grounds going everywhere).

You could buy a conversion kit for the hand grinder. By which I mean an electric screwdriver/drill. The square bolt is a universal connector so slots straight on to the adaptor head.
I rolled with that for a few weeks last month after a really greasy bag of beans fried the motor in my Wilfa.

I've never heard of greasy beans before - was it a really dark roast, with the beans exuding a lot of oil?

Oh man, i bought some beans from costco for my V60 that were from some san Francisco company (allegedly) a few years ago. They were really dark roasted & just exuded oily shit. Nasty. Definitely prefer light to medium roast after that experience!

Yeah, someone picked up a bargain bag from Lidl for me as a ‘saw this and thought of u’ thing. The beans had been roasted in the heart of the sun and were very oily so the grounds kept clogging the grinder up until it eventually burned the motor out. My own fault, really, but I just couldn’t bring myself to bin the beans as it seemed like such a waste.
A more butch grinder would probably have made short work of it but he svart is still fairly cheap.

gamecat Yep: the Ode! By what witchcraft became ye of this knowledge? Only really that and the Wilfa Uniform at 300ish, I think the Wilfa would drive me mad though. Next step is the Niche at 500, which seems a big jump.

Got a new Aeropress for xmas because over here it's cheaper to get an entire new press than to get hold of a replacement rubber bung. Not very eco friendly though...
Also got some Ikea coffee for xmas, which is surprisingly ok.

What about the Wilfa Svart for about 100 quid? Good entry to electrics grinders if you only really want it for filter coffee, V60 etc. Big part of the added premium of the Uniform and Niche etc is that that cover the full grind range including espresso.
