When i was six or seven, my dad left my mum and my three siblings one day. He took most of his stuff, except a couple of VHS cassettes from his collection.

One was the 1986 animated Transformers film. The other was Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson.

I am perfectly happy to admit when i am wrong, and when it comes to Westerns maybe there is a small part of me that looks for them where they don't exist... but it's going to take more than that half-baked gameplay trailer to persuade me i am wrong.

I've been to Vegas, and the parts that don't resemble a neon Texas actually make up almost all of it. They could have demonstrated that the setting is a Nevada-esque place, but they made a conscious decision to include all of these other Western images. Including the music and the logo.

Obviously i am not expecting cowboys and indians, i've already said as much. What i am expecting is for the story to reflect this visual theme. That is all.

The gameplay trailer showed us literally nothing, except that it's going to play like the other Saints Row games. Oh, and that there is a train... another staple of the Western.

And my opinion is not based on my imagination, but what i saw in the CGI reveal trailer - the trailer that clearly had more thought behind it.

I'd be happy to revisit this discussion when either the game is out or they release more information.

For the time being, it is absolutely beyond repute that they have included a lot of Western iconography, and it is not unreasonable to expect there to be a reason for this decision.

It could very well be 'it's set in Texas', but i doubt it. A good CGI reveal trailer, like Fall of Cybertron, or 'Destiny' in Dragon Age II, or even the Andromeda reveal, are tailor made down to the smallest detail to reflect the tones and themes of the game.

I always thought we needed more in depth discussions on the upcoming themes of Saints Row.
For the record, I hope Rodimus is right and I've not even seen the trailer

According to one of the Push Square journos, they asked the devs at a preview event about the sex toy weapon and apparently "that weapon wasn't coming back in this game". But there will be some other "crazy" weapons.

The weapon manufacturer is called Marshall too... another Old West reference.

Setting looks pretty cool

If you watch closely, one of the developers was wearing a plaid shirt. Clearly a sign.


I'm getting a bit bored of saying it. The CGI trailer was littered with Old West symbolism and sounds, which therefore suggests the narrative will also draw upon it. Neither gameplay trailer has given any significant indication as to the plot or mission structure.

Saints Row 4 took a lot of inspiration from the world of science fiction. I would anticipate Saints Row looking to things like No Country for Old Men and Logan.

All Saints Row games check off a number of staples of the old western anyway - an emphasis on outlaws or criminals and the general lawlessness of an area. This game is already known to have added a heavy emphasis on wilderness and vast landscapes, and a railway.

The music in all three videos has been decidedly 'western' too. They are knowingly creating a specific ambience... and in a written interview actually referred to the setting as the 'weird west'.

I'm a bit disappointed that they're not really showing off the western aspects of it properly. Handbrake turns on horses and the likes...

Does look pretty damn good though

If theres no "sex appeal" slider, then I'm not buying.
