No because once it's finished it will look like a seamless wall of shelves with no evidence they are Billy bookcases in a row or that's the theory. It's still quite a bit of work especially as you have to reinforce the wobbly back panels that Billy's have and fill all of the spare shelf holes and seamlessly join them all together and repaint the whole thing too of course but much easier for an unskilled muppet like me. I'm not the first.
A bit like this although we've got the extension bits on top so the shelves will go up higher than this:
Zuluhero this 'hack', though it occurred to me about two days into the project (having bought 5 new Billy bookcases) I could have just hunted around for S/H or free bookcases off Marketplace and used them instead, seeing as the whole lot will be painted.

freddiemercurystwinLooks good, hope you can get it how you want it. Secondhand would have been good, I was surprised how much IKEA stuff has gone up the last time I was there.

That looks really good! We've just moved to a house twice as big, but are struggling to find storage for all our crap. We'd have that crammed with books or junk.

Sleepers ordered.
Including taking away the crap, tools, rubble bags etc. this project has cost me about £2k so far. Once I've got the shed and other bits and more crap removed, it's looking like it will end up at the £3.5k mark. My bank account doesn't like me anymore.
That's what you get for piss poor planning and designing a garden while smoking. Started out life as take a couple feet out and level that little bit off and quickly became take out the bank which became take out the steps as well then we added the lawn into the equation. Had we done it properly I could have saved myself six weeks of digging and just had someone turn up with a mini digger for the day. It's been good fun though, so its not all bad. Also, my neighbours have a new found respect for me and are in awe of my spaghetti armed manliness.

I had a fun afternoon. Had a plumber in to fix a leak. When he looked at my boiler in the airing cupboard, he remarked that it looks like I had asbestos lining on the back of the door. Just seen this. We have the same, except our cupboard houses a massive storage heater for the shitty, ancient, noisy as fuck warm air heating system this house has. We've just left it where it is, dart holes and all. I only go in the cupboard twice a year to turn it on and off so I figure it's fine.

My shelves progression didn't really get as far as I would have liked in my week off, on the face of it it merely looks like a couple of Billy bookcases shoved together but it doesn't show the floor plinth, the major head-scratching to determine which holes to leave for shelves, which to drill through to connect the units and which to fill, the bookcase reinforcement that's gone on with the smaller units and the depressing hole filling that seemed to take about two days. So still got a fair bit to do, complete and reinforce the three wider units and the five units to go on top, fit them all in place/together/back to the wall and the surrounding frame and make the skirting board, then cover the joints between the units with a beading, then prime and paint the lot - really not looking forward to that bit.

Freds look slightly angled. With added fear of sofa location.
No thanks.

There's a well-known image of a petit blonde lady sitting on a couch and some large, muscular gentlemen are hovering ominously in the background.
This reminds of that.

Fair play Freddie, it's a big project to take on, I wouldn't go near it myself. You sound like you know what you're doing, and I look forward to the image of the end result

Cutting out your frame around your skirting and Dado rail is going to be fun.
If it's going to be permanent, I'd consider chopping that with something like a multitool saw and removing it, then slotting your custom frame in behind where it ends.

That said, if you don't want to risk damaging all your walls, get one of these if you don't have one already 😅 Contour Duplicator Gauge with Lock Profile Gauge 10 Inch(25cm) Plastic Woodworking Shape Tracing Template Measuring Tool amzn.eu/d/cCWQNLD

Zuluhero I do have a multi tool and am going through precisely those thoughts too, cutting slots out is definitely preferable, rather inconveniently the dado also aligns perfectly with where I wanted to attach all the units at the rear. It is 'permanent' but somehow it seems to go against the grain to chop a hole in the skirting/dados here and there when the next residents could rip it all out and be left with all of the dados/skirtings intact, I do have a scroll & band saw so achieving the notches required to fit around them is doable albeit a bit tricky when it's a 2.5m long bit of wood.

I removed and wrapped what I can, and am in the process of either boxing in/covering or sealing the rest. Been pretty tricky without disturbing it, but I think I've just about managed it. Guess I'll find out in 20 years...

You have a robin day sofa. Nice I have a couple of them and a couple of arm chairs. Yes the Days Forum and a chair here too, a true classic, bought 20+ years ago, sadly the sofa has seen better days, once my pride and joy it was then used in the last house for a decade in the play/family room so has seen all manner of awful food mixtures, literally pints of milk plastered all over it and in between the seat and back, really the leather needs professional restoring but that ain't gonna happen as it's now destined for the conservatory as we have a more comfortable sofa for use in this room, not sure how sweating away in summer and freezing in winter will see the sofa fair ....

Sleepers and rebar have been delivered. Still need to bury the mains water pipe, hopefully before the weekend. Then I just need to hire an auger for the post holes because sod digging those out, also got three trees to plant so I'll do those holes at the same time. The end is finally in sight.
I don't know what I was expecting, I know what a sleeper looks like, but for £800 it doesn't look like a lot.
Also, todays tip - make sure your finger is out of the way before you drop the sleeper.

Also, our upstairs lights are fucked. Had to turn them off at the fusebox as they were crackling and flickering despite all being switched off. Not sure whether to call an electrician or an exorcist.
If I had to guess though, I probably caused it pissing about with that light fitting some pages back, so at least I know where to point him.
