Impressive stuff. I've enough trouble assembling flat-packed furniture so this is wizardry.

I've been meaning to sort a garage side door for years, it's a bit of a mess. Clean it, strip it down, repaint etc. My wife is a bit of a stickler for doing things right, so is always reluctant to let me loose on it (she's busy constructing BBQ areas, garden cinema, pond etc).
So yesterday I took the first step and gave it a good scrub....turns out, that's all it needs! It's so bright white I'll be sticking it over the side of the house most likely to face the blast if Putin gets get up pissing about with conventional weapons.

Will post some pics.... My task is to get the wifi to hard to reach areas.

Hive mind:
I have a small bathroom sink with separate hot and cold feeds (on either side of the basin). I want to swap to a mixer tap on one side. What connector jobbies exist so I don't have to fuck about with pipe work?
(I am slightly ashamed I don't know this as my dad was a plumber and would be turning in his grave, if he had one)

Got a picture of the sink? Can't picture how far the pipes are from your description.

Will get a pic later but the pipes are about 210mm/8.5" apart.

The new mixer will have connections for flexi tails. That’s the easy part!
If you have copper or plastic pipe to that point you can get connectors that go between the pipe and the other end of the flexi tail.
Depending on the set up they might be in the right position or might need cut....

Yeah, they're copper pipes. Any more than hooking things together will end up with me getting the plumber to do it I think. Biggest concern is that it all looks a bit tight if we go for the new sink that my wife wants.

Biggest concern is that it all looks a bit tight if we go for the new sink that my wife wants. I’m with you on that. If you’re just replacing a tap and it’s flexi to flexi then it’s a piece of piss. If converters and joining pieces are needed then it’s time to get a man in. I have a mixer that has started to bind at the tap and it’s enough of an upheaval to think of getting under the sink and fucking about with it

I have a ceiling-mounted extractor fan in the bathroom. The timer (chronostat?) appears to have failed since it no longer turns off after 20 minutes. Where is that likely to be found: the light switch, the fan isolator switch, or in the fan itself?

It'll be in the fan, you'll likely need a whole new extractor fan.

You were all kind enough to say nice things about about project do-something-vaguely-useful. Drawers are now finished. Took a bit longer than expected - maybe 15 hours - as I ballsed up with the measurements and ended up making four ("measure twice, cut once" is for dweebs, I live my life on the edge). Also I tried a new way of doing the drawer fronts which was a mistake but I probably got away with it.
This is not how you're supposed to make drawers. Specifically, you're supposed to route the bottom into a channel groove round the sides rather than have the sides flush fit butt (teehee) jointed to the bottom with naught but half a dozen dowels to strengthen the joint. However, I am right and all those other people are wrong. My way is much easier to size drawers individually to precisely fit each space (because there is about a mm variation because measuring's for losers and I don't like using table saws, and I don't own a table saw) - you basically stick an oversized bottom (giggle) in the drawer space, put the drawer runners and both sides loose on top, flush against the cavity side, and then draw a line on the bottom where those loose drawer sides & runners meet - cut to that line and you have a precisely fit drawer bottom tailored to the space.
My way also gives a little more usable drawer space at the bottom and I'd argue is plenty strong enough (but because I messed up and made four, I'll be testing this, have made plenty like this over the years tho).
The drawer fronts are made in the same manner as the cabinet doors on the last page. There's nothing inherently wrong with making drawer fronts like this, unless you were planning on fitting them to the drawers in a stupid way.
Here's me fitting the drawer fronts in a stupid way. The problem is the forces imparted to open a drawer are straight out, and fixing the front to the drawer body in the same plane means those fixings are being stressed in their weakest plane. I'll get away with it, nine 50mm screws is more than strong enough. Less confident on the handle tho - again, pull that and you're pulling on the oak panel, which is held in with a ~6mm lip of pine all round it - again, total surface area is going to me more than enough but I'm not quite as sure on this one. Proper way to do it would be with a false front - construct the drawer bodies as in the image above but with five sides rather than four, with a front fitted exactly the same as the back is, and then attach the fancy oak panel drawer front to the plywood front, with the handle fixings running straight through both fronts. Mainly, doing drawer fronts this way caused a headache in decorating - glue requires an unpainted surface, so had to mask round fiddly bits to get it all painted.
But with enough filler to hide my shame I probably just about got away with it

I just spent about 2 hours butchering Mrs Mercury's crappy push along hoover thing that the eldest broke in a rage, finally got some use out of my S/H £20 arc welder, the repair looks abismal but strong, it's now Frankenhoover. 😃

Ooh I really want a go at stick welding - how easy is it to electrocute/set fire to yourself?
(and awww shucks, thanks everyone for being so kind)

IMO it's surprisingly easy to arc weld to join two bits of metal together successfully, though rather more difficult for it to look pretty. I thought I'd start off with a crappy S/H arc welder and see how I get on. When I went to look at it to buy it I had a nervous effort at welding something in front of the seller to check it all worked but couldn't really get it to work, I think it's because the bit of steel I had was a bit rusty and the rods were all really old but having got a grinder I can clean my work up properly beforehand now and new rods have helped, I did a bit of mig welding about 30 years ago and had similar results ie looked shit but functional but pretty happy with today's efforts, I guess if I could be bothered I could grind down my bumpy weld into something smooth/prettier.

Shitter question:
Our house has a shitty toilet (yes, yes). It’s an Ideal Standard and the loo seat attaches to the base by screwing into an embedded metal thread in the plastic seat. This is a shit design (yes, yes) and the embedded screw has worked loose many times.
I’ve epoxied it but it always fails eventually which is a pain in my arse (yes, yes).
Can anyone recommend a toilet brand that isn’t shit? It’ll save my sanity. Thanks!

It’ll save my sanity. Thanks! Don't you mean sanitation? Buy a 20 of year old armitage bog off ebay or marketplace, otherwise they're all shit (yes, yes).

All the ones I’ve seen seem shittly made and have non-standard sized parts so you’re locked into paying eight quid for a branded but still cheapo plastic loo seat.
